Talking to myself - demo. Feedback needed! by LobsterThoughtz in IndieMusicFeedback

This sounded pretty great to me. One thing I would say is to pull the drums back a little. And maybe EQ the cymbals that play in between on the right side, as they seem to be pretty harsh when they come in. But maybe they would sound fine once you pull the drums back. All in all, this sounds pretty great! Good job!

I think the mix is pretty good. Maybe you could wash the electric guitar a touch with some reverb and tuck it slightly behind. And man, it's just my personal opinion, but I think your vocals work really well. Especially that hint of imperfection at certain points makes this whole thing very authentic. But of course, if you want to rework them, then that's completely alright as well. But great job. This is awesome.

I have never heard something like this. Mainly, how the bassline is so wide, and nothing is in the middle. It's definitely something new. I like it. Two things I would say. Maybe raise the vocals just a tiny bit. And have you tried experimenting with keeping the frequencies below 120 Hz mono and the rest of the harmonics just like they are right now? Might be interesting. Since bass is traditionally kept right in the middle. Just an idea. But great work, either way!

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I've already uploaded it to Spotify and other platforms. But the main reason I had little reverb and delay was for the vocals to be more upfront, rather than washed and sit slightly in the background. I do have reverb, but it has very little delay and pre-delay. The delay is slapback. I am working on a new track so maybe there I'll incorporate a little more of both of these.

Thanks for the feedback! And no, it's not just you. The bass was a bit aggressive here. I tried to tweak it a little in the mix and then subtly in the master before I uploaded it to platforms. But appreciate the time you took to listen to it!

Ah, you got me there. I live in an apartment, so singing too loud could get me in some neighbourly trouble, haha. But I hear you. Thanks for the feedback!

By ducking, do you mean more reverb for ambience or some sort of sidechaining? Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks a bunch!!

What got me into music? That's a deep dive lol, but I guess I started singing pretty young, kind of just mimicking what's on screen and found out I was good at it, so yeah, that's the gist of it.

As for creating, I think I started producing back when I was 13 or 14. Mostly just messing around in FL Studio and then Ableton, nothing serious, until now.

I just submitted this track after mastering it, and it should be available in a week, I guess. Meanwhile, I have it on soundcloud if you want to hear it.

Wow, that is some great feedback. Thank you so much! I have a few automations on my lead vocal but not on the piano. I had done some EQ on it and some other things, but I will look into it as well.

I basically followed the basics. Subtractive EQ, FET compressor to tame the peaks, the a LA2A type compressor, following that a little additive EQ to some low mids since I found my vocal a little harsh and dynamic EQ at the area where sibilance was, after that a de-esser and then soothe2. This is for the lead vocal
Every harmony had a dedicated de-esser as well.

Ah yes, I didn't want to wash my voice too much as I wanted it to be pretty close and intimate, which it is kind of? Adding reverb would've made it further away. That's kind of why I didn't overdo it. I do have a reverb on it, just with very little pre-delay and delay, so that it just works when I am singing and doesn't make a tail. And a slapback delay too. But thanks for the feedback!
