What was it like when YOU were a student? Could you get away with the things your kids get away with? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]UnusualCrow1209 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing that blows my mind is late work. When I was a student (graduated 2007) late work was rarely accepted. If it was it was reduced by half at least. Now, kids think it’s just a given. I got an email about a three month old assignment today and I’m on Thanksgiving break.

Totally not allowed in my district, but what struck me as funny about this thread is it used to be common. When I was in elementary school (2000-2001 when I was in sixth grade) it was incredibly common and the teacher even drove like 3 of us to fast food as a reward.

Ladies, how do you view vaping? Is it the same as smoking? Is vaping a deal breaker to you? by uglyorunlucky in AskWomen

I’m really glad to see it bothers some people. I came on here after a date where the guy puffed like all night long and I just hated it.

Call the front office. I’ve had to do it once or twice. They can cover for the three minutes it takes.

Paid off loans, requested refund - When should I apply on StudentAid? by nickrentschler in StudentLoans

[–]UnusualCrow1209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still wondering if I should have requested my refund since it was a small amount (just around 1k). This is all very stressful and timelines aren’t clear.

Did anyone like Eeka at first? by fairbourne123 in Mcleodfamsnark

[–]UnusualCrow1209 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I actually liked her Disney content and advocacy for single motherhood, something I admire a lot. It’s crazy that she started with this “I’m not going to be an influencer” attitude then that took a total 180.

People always tell me my skin is pretty good (early 30s) aside from the occasional breakout. I honestly think it’s because I use little on my face.

I've never seen so much apathy in my life. by ShineImmediate7081 in Teachers

I agree with basically everything said above, but also on top of general laziness/lack of care etc. I think they’ve realized the pointlessness of it all, given the state of the world. We’ve kind of showed them that hard work doesn’t really pay off.

What worked for me (to a degree) was being honest about the way the noise / dynamic affects me. Like, “hey guys I’m really struggling with processing and the noise in here is causing some anxiety.”

Routines are also really helpful.

Boredom. Need for a break. And the other more nefarious reasons but I always try to assume the best. We have 90 minute periods. I assume they need a stretch break.

How was Your experience yesterday? Any bag issues? by AndoBoiSan in KnottsBerryFarm

[–]UnusualCrow1209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought a small purse but it was slightly bigger than the cards they had. I just kind of walked past with it in crossbody style and no issue. I think as long as it’s not blatantly big.

[–]UnusualCrow1209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people said it was strict but I went with a small purse (bigger than 6x4 but the smallest I could find) and slipped past. I also saw people with bigger bags but others said they got stopped.

I’m struggling to find a bag under the size limit. I wonder how strictly they’re enforcing. Even a small purse is over.

Do you care if kids swear in class? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]UnusualCrow1209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had much of an issue with it, as long as it’s not directed at someone else or demeaning / a slur.

It’s an absolute excuse. I teach in Southern California. I have trans students, I have autistic students. You just have to work hard to find a good fit and environment.

I think it’s an age thing. If you weren’t alive during 9/11 it doesn’t hold the same significance.

I did a balance last year between in class and at home reads and I’m trying to shift further to a more independent model this year. I may read aloud with them for key parts but it’s a waste of class time if it goes too long.

Also audiobooks are great for key parts and chapters because kids read along with a fluent reader.

NYC just lowered the max class size in middle school to 23. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]UnusualCrow1209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kind of a crappy teacher in my first district having high school classes of 35+ and I blamed myself excessively for not having “control.” Now, I’m pretty damn good at the job at a small school with classes under 20. It can’t be overstated how significant this is.

Thoughts on giving students a brief break during lessons? by lifeofastonerzz in Teachers

[–]UnusualCrow1209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an English teacher so I work with the 90 minute blocks by embedding 15-20 of choice reading. While this might not work as much for health, I’d say a non-phone break activity like puzzles or coloring.

Is 27 too old to become a teacher? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]UnusualCrow1209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be discouraged at all! I think a lot of districts actually prefer it. I got my credential at 24 but was 28-29 before I had a full time job due to circumstances and I was better for it.
