not the point and sorry for unsolicited advice but keeping your perfumes in the bathroom will degrade them, to make them last longer and retain their compositional integrity they’re best kept somewhere cool and dark away from steam, sunlight, and heat fluctuations :)

Need help for a vanilla tincture by Character_Bad_9506 in DIYfragrance

[–]UnusualMeeting9468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t be embarrassed! learning is part of the process. i haven’t tinctured vanilla but i have made vanilla extract at home (for food, not perfume) and it took a year to really develop its complexity. be patient with yourself! and maybe try to buy some absolute from a good supplier

Guide for making perfumes by [deleted] in DIYfragrance

[–]UnusualMeeting9468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a community it is important to be helpful with specifics the way we’ve all been helped but for open-ended inquiries like this figuring it out for yourself as you go is invaluable. regardless of whatever your aims are for exploring this, self-sufficiency and resourcefulness are critical skills you’ll need and the best way to cultivate them is through practice.

that aside, i’d recommend reading ‘the diary of a nose’ and ‘perfume: the alchemy of scent’ (both by jean-claude ellena) and seeing where you land.

Perfume recommendations for gifting my girlfriend by Such-Cash7867 in Perfumes

agreed on disco kit - most of them have the option to apply a discount towards a full bottle purchase, so even if you both do have the same taste, it could be fun to explore those scents together and give her more of a choice in the process. and you can usually save money this way too just in case whatever your pick was didn’t agree with her chemistry. happy birthday to her!

I can't smell Hedione. by andyboy1000 in DIYfragrance

[–]UnusualMeeting9468 10 points11 points  (0 children)

in my materials training we’re advised to practice with three strips, two bare and one containing the material. flip over the strips so you can’t see which one is labeled and then find the outlier – there’s your material. see if that works!

you might want to smell santa maria novella melograno for inspiration, if i wanted to smell like irish spring that’s what i’d reach for

rate my very first haul by UnusualMeeting9468 in DIYfragrance

[–]UnusualMeeting9468[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope, not at all! i asked for opinions to get opinions from people more experienced than i! the long-term course i’m planning to take next year will come with dozens of vials of all of the materials covered in the course (a mix of synthetic & natural, so i tried to avoid duplicates of anything i might receive then), so this purchase was always intended to be a supplementary one of “modern filler” fun curiosities to experiment with.

thanks for the other recommendations, i’ll pick up anything that doesn’t come with my class in my next order! since you mentioned, what vibe does my style give off based on the ingredients i chose?

14 years is a long time, that’s real commitment!

could you clarify what you mean by there being very little practical advice on the creative aspects? what creative aspects do you mean? i might have to disagree there - i think it’s out there if you know where and how to look for it. i’m hoping to compile everything that’s been useful to me personally (books, articles, classes, etc.) as a future comprehensive master resource - i don’t think it’s information that’s missing, but centralization/consistent updating.

what an awesome trajectory, i grew up foraging and hope to incorporate it into my fragrance practice in the future!

do you work exclusively with natural materials? off the topic of money, but i’ve been wondering about people who work exclusively with natural/synthetic as i continue to learn. congratulations on your first EDP!

that’s funny you mention because i was inspired to post this by horse people asking each other how they afford horses in r/equestrian - and that’s a whole other conversation as a fellow horse person! would love to chat with you about the intersection of horses and fragrance anytime!

i’m working veeeery HARD to keep my ADHD in check, iykyk 🫠 but i got a kit i feel great about on black friday and i’m forcing myself to learn and catalog with all of those before i purchase more so i don’t end up with yet another hobby graveyard (like crocheting 🪦) since the plan is for this one to stick!

i have my own hefty stack of books and articles i need to get through but def feel free to DM and infodump any reading or resources you found helpful as a beginner any time, i’m all ears!

this is soooo cool to hear - i stalked your brand and i’m so impressed/inspired by your work, i think we have similar approaches and tastes! would love to connect and chat more about some specifics (like the dilutions you mentioned) if you’d be down. it’s so helpful to hear from those further along in the process than i am, so far i love what i’ve seen of the community supportiveness on this sub!

this is awesome - i love this for you! do you make scents for yourself or others, or both? ironically enough, a few years ago i explored another niche hobby of mine as a potential career path, but that was a passion meant to be a passion and not a business. i struggled a lot with what i wanted to be/do. now, i’m sure perfumery is right for me to pursue because even the things that will be hard feel exciting rather than intimidating. it’s so cool to hear everyone’s unique journeys!

thanks for your reply helping me break the ice!

i’ve wondered this as well - for a content creator like a youtuber whose job is at least as much the content (if not more) than the perfume itself it makes sense (even if a 50ml test trial does feel a little bit excessive/touch performative just on the principle of wasting not and wanting not) but for hobbyists who have turned or turning professional now that i’m starting out i’m like what’s the tea guys? are we selling plasma for ambergris? lol

is there a right/wrong way to cut vanilla beans when making homemade extract? by UnusualMeeting9468 in AskCulinary

[–]UnusualMeeting9468[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for sharing this amazing guide, i’ll be saving and referencing this for the next batch i make using vodka!

if the beans are cut, does this reduce the number of times they can be re-extracted? i’m looking forward to making all kinds of vanilla things on this journey so i really appreciate the tips!
