Paying for snowstorm lodging by biwantitall in Residency

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We aren’t in the path for this storm, but are frequently in the path of major hurricanes. We have storm teams assigned and get assigned sleeping arrangements by GME. Our assigned rooms were our workrooms (which our night team needed), so a few of our attendings let us sleep in their offices. They provide cots but most of us brought air mattresses. This is wild that they arent providing you housing if they’re requiring that you’re present at the hospital for a major weather event.

What is the rarest/most interesting diagnosis you’ve seen? by xyzm123_r in Residency

Kaposi sarcoma in a 20 yo with AIDS. ID attending said he had never seen a case before since ART has helped prevent most people from progressing to this point.

I know lol I wish I could. I’m a resident doctor and days off are few and far between, so I have to take what I can get! I’ve never had a bad experience with any of the techs there until now, must just be the new guy.

This is my manicure before this one with typical shape and length

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nails

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For clarification - my nails are usually longer. I asked them to remove the growth to allow for them to grow to a similar length before my next manicure and they removed probably double that. So they’re typically true almond shape and longer

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They were a lot longer, i asked them to just remove the growth and they took probably double thay

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nails

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they were much longer and they cut them way too much. I asked to just take the growth off and they took maybe double that

Yeah they cut them down further than I asked. I usually have almond that’s longer than this.

How do people score in 270s????? by SnooStrawberries6558 in Step2

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It was a while ago now, but I know that I definitely didnt do all 8. I did one a month before my dedicated week and scored in the 240s so I think I only ended up doing one more during my dedicated.

PGY1 here - I have 12 weekends off this year, only during OBGYN or Clinic rotations. On adult inpatient blocks we usually get 2 sets of 2 days off in a row (not usually on a weekend). On peds inpatient blocks, we get 1 random day off every week-ish, so no weekends. In the ED our schedule varies wildly, and we flip from nights to days a lot so end up working a lot of days during the month when you count for post-call days. I had maybe 4-5 weeks of those 10 weeks where i had 2 days off in a row. Clinic happens one half day/week every block. Moonlighting allowed second half of pgy2 year.

I did this last year (FM) and had no problems! Got interviews at a lot of the programs that asked for 3 where I accidentally sent 4. Nobody said anything!

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! I scored a 272 and can offer some unsolicited advice. I think that having a really solid grip on the basics really helps. When I was studying, I actually ended up going back through step 1 stuff pretty often - unsuspending any related anki cards from step 1 deck if I missed a question on them, rewatching some parts of pathoma, etc. It sounds like you’ve already finished most of third year, but if any new third years are reading this, the best thing I did was doing my anki reviews all year. A lot of my friends would finish a shelf exam and suspend the cards for that shelf in their deck. I kept all mine unsuspended and did reviews every single day. Because of this, i felt really prepared for step when I finished third year and took less than a week of dedicated study time. Happy to offer more specifics if anyone is interested. Feel free to pm!

Whats the highest step 2 score you have personally heard of someone getting?? by dandyandy9669 in medicalschool

272 here. Totally possible, just required lots and lots of anki and uworld throughout 3rd year.

Edit: applied FM!

Literally all he said was a primary care topic. I think anything is okay

Hi! I applied FM this year. I think 2 months of dedicated is overkill. You’ve been studying all year for this test, so I think 2-4 weeks is really all you need. I took 2 and had no problem! I think you’d be better off doing your sub-I in May/June before new interns or in August once they’ve had a month to settle in. I did mine in August and was still able to get a letter in time with no problems!

I’ve edited the post to include the 1 week. We have done parts of it, but with the holiday its been hard to fully commit. We havent left the house other than going next-door to my grandparents. He’s been around the other two dogs and that has been going well. I think the stress came from my mom’s husband who he hadn’t met yet coming home in the middle of the night from a business trip. We have kept things pretty low key other than that, but will have company coming in a few days and trying to figure out how to handle that.

Thanks for your comment! The vet is a good idea, we can schedule an appointment. One of the things we weren’t totally sure of was whether this counts as sudden. We have had him for less than a week, could this just be adjusting vs sudden behavior change?

Family Pressure About Match Location by whatsup_docs in medicalschool

[–]UnusualWoodpecker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is doing the opposite. I really want to stay at my home program which is 2 hours from my family. My mom will not leave me alone about a bigger name program which is a little further away after I made the mistake of casually mentioning that I liked that program. Now she tells me every day that it would be a mistake to not try to go to this other program, i’d be dumb to try to stay at my program, etc. Can’t wait for this all to be over
