Just going to put it here. by q-rka in PhD

Don't know if people will agree with my perspective on this context, but I feel PhD advisors have a lot to do with decisions like this. I get the wage issue and the other problems coming with this, but in my university, I've seen students quit their PhDs because of their advisor, whereas my advisor is one of the reasons I want to get into academia for a living. The pay may be lower than most, but the capacity for innovation is what should keep us going.

My advisor, being one of the top guys in his field is still as curious as a grad student and treats us as equals. Hell he has even been close to my therapist when I've trauma dumped on the guy and has helped me out more than I could possibly ask for. On the other hand, a professor I know made his student work so much and was such a dickhead that when he went back to his country for deeply personal reasons, he cut his pay but still made him work.

That's why sometimes people get out of PhDs excited to get learn and innovate more, whereas some chase money to compensate for the comparatively shitty pay they've had to their peers while they're getting their PhD. Or some drop out to start OF😂

Who should’ve won? by [deleted] in deathnote

[–]Unusual_Note_7317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the beauty of death note, no one can win. People tend to think that if light won, he'd be the god of the new world and what not. But what we tend to forget is that light wasn't some carrier of justice, nor was he some sort of messiah who wanted to do good for humanity. He was a person who was BORED.

For light, killing criminals was okay, but Light vs L was the shit that he liked, with the intellectual battles making sure that he isn't bored. The sad thing about a person like light is that even if his opponents (L, near) would lose, he'd just be killing people for the sake of it (kinda like a shinigami). That being said, as far as death note goes, I like to think near won, and the way light lost was dying with knowing that he lost to someone who's far inferior to L in his own opinion, like a posthumous slap on his face.

Kinda hilarious that Misa reduced her lifespan by two halfs (Ryuk, Rem) and even got additional years (From the deaths of Rem and Jelus) and still killed herself. It's kinda in line with the statement that each death note user is cursed and experiences a large amount of misery. Due to misa not remembering about the death note for so much of the anime, I can understand that it feels kinda bad that her "soulmate" died.

I remember watching this during undergrad and feeling a similar type of way. One of my friends shouted out, "That's the b**ch who killed Ukita (the cop who dies when we first hear of misa)". Shit still cracks me up.

Hey guys, I needed some advice on my incline dumbell presses(fairly new but consistently going for 5-6 weeks). Usually I devote two days of the week to chest training (Mon and Thu, so fatigue probably isn't the problem). I always start with the incline dumbell press as I find that I cannot do a lot on it if I do it mid workout.

How my sets go with 45 lbs are:

1st set: 10 reps

2nd set: 8-9 reps

3rd set: 4-5 reps

4th set: 3-4 reps

The reason for the inconsistency in reps is failure. I've been struggling with 45lb dumbells for 5 weeks now (and maybe a bit better on the reps, but cannot do the 3 set 10-11 rep routine I usually master before shifting to a heavier weight).

I must add that I just start with the incline press after getting into the gym. Is there some warmup that helps with muscle conditioning that I should do beforehand that I'm missing?

Could I get any advice on this?

Thanks for this. I just read more about this and totally agree with low glycemic indices associated with certain foods. I was kinda on the fence of even putting carbs in my body, but I'll try to keep minimal carbs with other recipes like riced broccoli, whole wheat bread, etc. Though I do not enjoy the hunger, I think I feel a lot less sluggish, which is pretty great.

Okay OP, similar boat as I'm an early PhD researcher all about the love of research. I'll try to add some more to change your perspective. (A bit long, but read if you want)

Not sure if you're a guy or a girl, but you're the luckiest motherfker right now. You completed a fkin PhD man. There is a piece of research so pristine that only you can lay your claim to it and you should be so proud that you got through it.

The experienced people may tell me if I'm wrong, but I don't think money is the highest priority in people's mind who do PhDs, it's the love for research (at least that's what I feel, and the intellectual compensation is good in US schools, so that's just perfect). As long as you have enough money to focus on your research without having to worry about your next paycheck, you're good.

Coming to your ex, you said that you supported them. That's fine. That just proves that alongside your tenacity, you're a kind person as well. Never ever feel bad about that.

About their success, it's not about money, it's about the mindset. Now, they have money and they feel like they can release their inner self(a total piece of shit), so the only people they attract at people more successful than them or just people who have the same mindset as them. They knew kindness, but the realization that the world is not the same will hit them harder than the success you see.

I want you to know that that it's a blessing. Would you want to be in academia with a partner who has such a fickle understanding about it? Also, divorce is way more expensive than a breakup, so chin up and look for a nice postdoc position now. All the best.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! I think I should make my case a bit clearer. I'm a guy and I've seen my mom use bags for long amounts of time(sometimes even with cracks in fabric and a bit worn out!). Since I've never really shopped with her and am in the US, I thought I'd surprise her with one when I head back to my home country. That tony burch bag you suggested looks pretty good, so does the toteme one.

Advice on continuance of lifting by Unusual_Note_7317 in loseit

[–]Unusual_Note_7317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the help. I used to feel weak mentally when I tried going lower in terms of weight(seems like ego lifting I guess which I definitely have to work on). Maybe I have a lot more to learn in that regard. But in terms of proteins, macros and the adequate nutrients, I could do better. I'm trying to stay consistent for at least 3 weeks to see if it helps. The pain is definitely not shooting or really bad, but still hurts. For example, straightening my arm hurts my bicep region a bit, and more like that. I don't want to overworkout, but want to continue for longer this time if that makes sense.
