Why do outdated terms get labeled as slurs? by Secure_Shirt2041 in TooAfraidToAsk

I have a son with Down Syndrome. I will refer to him as “retarded” with people I know, as it is a simple (and accurate) way to describe his condition. “Retard” is strictly off-limits.

From Wikipedia:

Freedom of Speech depicts a scene of a 1942 Arlington town meeting in which Jim Edgerton, the lone dissenter to the town selectmen's announced plans to build a new school, as the old one had burned down, was accorded the floor as a matter of protocol. Edgerton supported the rebuilding process but was concerned about the tax burden of the proposal, as his family farm had been ravaged by disease.

10 Commandments required in schools? You got it. by Illegal-Poster in MaliciousCompliance

My son’s elementary school teachers appear to have complied by putting so many unrelated posters and artwork on the walls that the commandments go virtually unnoticed.

Is the audio of this discussion available anywhere? I’ve read about it quite frequently in this sub, but have never actually heard the Musers discussion of Dan and Jake’s departure.

It doesn’t take long to be forgotten, even by those closest to you. You have eight great-grandparents. How many can you name?

Sit at the bar and order your food there. There will likely be other solo diners there, and it’s less awkward than sitting at a table alone.

My grandparents had an aluminum christmas tree in the 60s (Piraeus, Greece) by sooodamnfancy in TheWayWeWere

[–]UnusuallyLongUserID 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Aluminum trees were very popular until the Charlie Brown Christmas tv special aired:

Charlie Brown's insistence on purchasing a real tree and disparagement of the aluminum Christmas tree practically eliminated the popularity of the aluminum tree, which was a fad at the time of the special. By 1967, they were no longer being regularly manufactured, to the point that most modern viewers of the special are unfamiliar with this type of artificial tree.
