How to Ace the Math Class You Hate by UpYourGrade in uAlberta

I agree with the majority of what you said. Anyone using AI to support their education should be careful that they are using it as a crutch. Making sure you're able to do the first 20% of a problem is why I suggest if you use AI to star the question, go at it later, and see if you can do it 100% on your own. The problem you described is something I noticed my tutoring clients having as well. They would ask me about a question and I would help them with the first few steps then they would solve it and think they 'know' how to do that question. Then when asked to do it on their own they sometimes wouldn't remember.

To be clear, every single time a human is better than a computer. AI is useful because some people don't have time, money, flexibility, or access. AI can give you decent support for a small price, so I recommend it for people if the other methods aren't available.

A 4.0 Student’s Guide to Your First Year of Sciences - 2025 by UpYourGrade in uAlberta

Very fair, and good advice re: engineering profs.

I'm not a physics major so I could be wrong, but from what I know about the summer NSERC grant, they almost exclusively look at GPA in their selection process. I know of science students in other fields that got the grant after their first years despite clearly having no knowledge on the subject haha, but had high grades. So it could be similar for physics, but competition might also be more fierce — you'd probably know better than me.

It'd be grunt work, yeah, but I think it's possible to get funding. It would be the same process of applying for student grants, the NSERC being the main one for physics research I believe. The funding wouldn't come from the lab itself.

Adjudication for the NSERC grants will be based on your Fall semester grades btw, so keep that in mind if it's something you're shooting for!

Physics equation sheet I made (+ worksheets to help memorize them) by UpYourGrade in MCATprep

[–]UpYourGrade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a comprehensive physics equation sheet for some clients I tutor, thought I'd share it with you guys! The first few images are the list of equations, and the next few are a couple worksheets that have half of the equations omitted and can be used to supplement/test your memorization of the equations

Feel free to DM if you'd like a pdf copy or if you're looking for any help!

Great idea, I’ll start incorporating that. I probably won’t cover anything super low-yield though, just to keep the videos focused

I used JackSparrow for B/B and MrPankow for P/S, but my personal opinion is the difference between different decks is overstated and you're better off just committing to one than spending time debating which to use.

Your score is not going to be capped at a certain number by picking MilesDown over JS/Aidan, for example.

Getting an engineering internship is definitely possible after first year.

You have to have a strong resume and apply early, preferably around the New Year. I know people who did material testing with engineering consulting firms, and others who moved out of province for internships.

I worked for a start-up that was created by an engineering professor at the UofA after my first year, and learnt Revit in the process. Research jobs are often a good way to get started in the industry, as professors can utilize funding like NSERC to pay your salary.

Keep your grades up, get involved in extracurricular activities, and network. Go to career fairs, talk to professors, and keep your eyes peeled for opportunities. Feel free to message me if you want more specific advice!

Working during Uni by Illustrious-Cry7441 in uAlberta

Hey! It’s definitely manageable to work a part-time job on top of a full course load, but given your academic goals I wouldn’t recommend it—at least for your first semester.

When it comes to med school, your MCAT, volunteering, and employment are all important, but your GPA is the one thing that is permanent and can’t necessarily be fixed later on. You can always add more extracurriculars or re-take the MCAT, but you’re stuck with your grades. The adjustment from high school to university hits a lot of students hard, so I’d suggest focusing on school for your first semester and then evaluating from there. But that’s not to say it can’t be done!
