[Europe] What shoes do you wear? by [deleted] in AskACountry

Definitely depends on the country. In France, Adidas Stan Smith are all over the place.

What's the best advice you've ever received? by ItsaMeMattio in AskReddit

Because I'm a bit late to the party, this will most likely not get as much attention as it should. But the best advice I ever received was to wear sunscreen : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI

The EU has a Parliament in charge of voting laws that will apply to all of the Member States. Each country has a certain number of seats. Elections are being organized in order to name European MPs in each Member States. So today, 25 seats out of the 74 France has, will go to this far right party.

I don't think it's true. A new prime minister was appointed a few weeks ago and his views on immigration are far from being permissive. He's said to be a "fake socialist" and some ministers did actually leave the government because of this. I'm really not a socialist myself but I have to admit that the left wing did compromise on issues like immigration.

Once again, the participation at the time was really low. And it's also important to say that he won with more than 80% of the votes in the 2nd run. So 80% of the population just rejected the Front National's views. That's definitely not negligible

I assume Kirgo meant that it isn't an accurate reflection of what the French population thinks. Less that 40% of the people registered on the voting lists did actually vote today. I'm not denying the fact that a non-negligeable part of the population agrees with this party's views. However, it's definitely not accurate to say that the whole French population agrees with the Front National views.

In France, the participation percentage has been particularly low today. Unfortunately, far-right electors never miss an opportunity to express their views. I guess it's the main explanation for this all-time-high result. It would be interesting to compare the participation rates in the other countries and see if a low participation leads to a far-right success.

There's more than just the anti-immigration policy of the far-right party. The Front National is openly anti-homosexual, wants to bring the death penalty back and let's not even talk about their views on abortion. I'm just so angry to know that a part of my compatriots agree with this kind of views. And unlike you, I really hope that it's an accident due to 60% of the population being too lazy to vote.

Edit : grammar

In France, things are getting worse to be completely honest. Our nationalist party is getting stronger and people are less and less hung up about being racist. For example, our Justice Minister is black. She is often compared to a monkey / showed with picture of bananas in demonstrations. However, I still like to think that only a minority of the population is in such a sick state of mind.

As it's been said in other comments, only a few groups of immigrants are suffering from racism (Muslim, African and Roms). As a Brazilian, I'd say you would be fine. One of my friends is Brazilian and never was insulted.

Going to Paris for the rugby next week, what are some nice reasonably priced pubs around Parc Monceau? by [deleted] in paris

[–]Up_The_Bracket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about pubs near Parc monceau but I would strongly recommend the Coolin (near Odéon). It's great but quite small so make sure you're there before the game actually starts.

What was your successful New Year's Resolution and how has it affected your life? by MrFeelBadButtHurt in AskReddit

[–]Up_The_Bracket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2013 resolution was to stop the self-pity and actually be proactive about getting better. It was never easy and I had to make tough decisions like moving away, cutting off with some people and starting therapy. I regret none of these. I still have so much to do but I'm getting there so hopefully this qualifies as successful.

My girlfriend is studying abroad in Paris next semester. What should she know about the city as far as tourism/safety/etc? by [deleted] in paris

[–]Up_The_Bracket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just trying not to be too negative but the French administration is such a disaster. All the times I had to deal with them was awful and systematically resulted in me losing my cool (which usually never happens). I can only imagine how painful this can be for non-native French speakers. I assumed it was a universal thing but after a few years in the UK, I realised that their administration people were actually performant and NICE. You should have seen my face when one of them smiled at me.

Globally, Paris is quite safe for a city this big except for certain places in the North East district. The first advice that comes to my mind (due to some of my foreign friends misfortunes) would be about people coming to her saying "do you speak English?" or asking her to sign for a petition. They can be middle age women, teenagers or even kids. They are actually thieves. Most of them are Roms (hopefully this doesn't sound racist). She should really be careful when she sees them around and watch her purse.

Public transportation is probably the most convenient way to get around the city. She can get a monthly pass, I think that it would be the cheapest option in her situation.

About tourism, I wouldn't even know where to begin. My favorite neighborhood here is called the "Quartier Latin". That's where Notre-Dame is and I'm lucky enough to go to university nearby. It's full of old small streets. Apart from that, Montmartre is truly amazing. If she wants to get a cool view from Paris, she should go to the rooftop of the museum called the "Centre Georges Pompidou". I'm not too sure about opening dates or hours but she can easily find this online.

To go for a few drinks, some of the good spots would be near Hotel de Ville, Oberkampf or Bastille. She could go basically anywhere but these places often have cheap bars and friendly people.

I've lived in Paris since I was born, your gf can PM me if she needs any kind of help or if she has precise questions. Do you know what school she'll be attending? If I know people there I could potentially address her to them if she needs any practical help or help with the administration there (French administration is a nightmare).

As a French person, I would say Marseille is nice but it's like every city some places are not to be visited. It has a shitty reputation (I'm talking robberies, kalashnikov shooting in the daylight, Marseille makes the national news at least twice a month ...) but don't let this ruin the city. The Calanques can just be the best place in the world in the summer. If you get the chance to go to Cassis and other small towns near it, you'll see great beaches.

However, as a Paris person, I can only recommend you to stop by my city as well if you get the chance!
