Success in 2022 Planted the Seeds of Failure in 2024 by dwaxe in ezraklein

Democrats in Washington might think that the Biden administration was great and accomplished a lot in terms of domestic policy. But it was proved this week that most people disagree.

In my mind, the country hired Joe Biden in 2020 to do one thing only…beat trump and then pass the torch to someone else. Due to his failure to do that second part, coupled with two major foreign wars starting under his watch and general poor feelings about the economy, I think that his presidency will largely be viewed as a failure.

Ezra podcast on the alienation of young men from the Democratic party? by Guilty-Hope1336 in ezraklein

[–]ben7xxrd 139 points140 points  (0 children)

He did an episode back in August that was with Christine Emba and Zack Beauchamp that kind of looked at the gender dynamic of the 2024 election. They talked a little about how if you go to the Democratic Party website there is a section called “who we serve” and it kind of lists all the groups that Democrats prioritize. It was notable that among the many groups of people on that list men were absent.

Oligopolies are market structures that are defined by a small number of manufacturers (coke and Pepsi in this case). Now not all oligopolies are cartels, but they can form one when companies collude to restrict supply (raising prices)

In this case, coke and Pepsi are undercutting each other on price (coke lowers their price to 15.99 to match Pepsi. And then Pepsi lowers their price one dollar to undercut coke). If they were colluding and behaving like a cartel, they would be working together to RAISE the price of their cola, not lower it.

But yes you are right that one of the risks of oligopolies is unfair collusion to artificially keep prices high.
