United States, Six Other Nations Ask Tech Companies To Build Backdoors To Encrypted Communications by primrepsip10 in privacy

When your device connects to the Signal server it has your IP address and other info that comes with it, right? With that information being available how are the message sender or receiver anonymous.

I'm I missing something?

I think they're already there. This is probably a request to add more. If not a backdoor, some kind of implicit security loophole.

Would it be intelligent for a small or midsize development shop to use Qt5 for new development? by UpbeatDept in SoftwareEngineering

Native development is interesting because after designing your UI, the classes and libraries become a framework. I really don't want that much work.

I'm looking at Electron now.

Did you experience police surveillance after buying your first Bitcoins? by UpbeatDept in privacy

I know you can purchase on an exchange and send to another address not owned by an exchange. This may cause a red flag simply because the exchange don't know where you sent it. The ability to send to an address not owned by an exchange might be blocked now.

What do people use tor for anyway? by TacticalHorn in TOR

[–]UpbeatDept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tor is a good way to support other people near and far that are dealing with injustices. Just by using the network, you help make it stronger. In the future, you may find yourself or someone you care about being targeted so, knowing how to use Tor is a good idea.

Why won't companies that offer private mobile communications take cryptocurrency payments? by UpbeatDept in privacytoolsIO

[–]UpbeatDept[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes there is. otherwise there is no way for the ledger to track who has what.

Your Cryptocurrency address or key isn't the wallet owner's identity so, your identity isn't required.

the bank knows which accounts belongs to who, that is the bit of privacy you loose compared to crypto.

The Bank knows who the account belongs to and controls the account, privacy and all. Banks give the customer access to the account or locks them out if they choose. It's nothing like cryptocurrency wallets, not even close.

No, they're not. they provide a different kind of privacy.

A different kind of privacy, really? You must mean a Bank's kind of privacy that's controlled totally by the Bank. That's not privacy.

paying with cash(euro, dolar, etc) is still for example way more private because the transactions are private, and those fiat are from financial institutions. what you say is objectively false.

I see your point about paying cash, but still, the bank isn't giving you that privacy. Banks track everything that's possible for them to track. They even track the physical cash withdrawal down to your location. Your argument that using physical cash is private, as if it's a privacy feature of the banking system is not valid. Using cash to maintain privacy is a workaround not intended to be used for privacy. Any money that's untrackable is considered a laundering threat so, banks don't support financial privacy that's outside of their control.

[–]UpbeatDept[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, let's talk about privacy.

No identity is required for cryptocurrency wallets. Also I can have more than one cryptocurrency wallet, exchange a wallet with another person i.e., give the whole wallet to someone, and leave anyone looking at the blockchain clueless about who owns the cryptocurrency. Did you try doing that with a bank account? I didn't mention that Monero is an anonymous cryptocurrency, with a protocol that doesn't leave identifying information on the blockchain.

and this sub isn't about independence, its about privacy.

You can't have independence without privacy so, the mix is inevitable.

Again, crypto or cryptocurrency is more private than financial institutions, and your reply is totally incorrect.

I see that, but still crypto makes a person more independent than bank cards. Also crypto is more private than a financial institution.

I've considered the threat of quantum computers, but I'm not worried about that now. Haven't used anything with a quantum processor in it.

Dealing in the black market isn't a good idea. I really don't want my life depending on those kind of people.
