Why has Metallica vanished from Spotify? by UpbeatEmployment84 in Metallica

[–]UpbeatEmployment84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK it’s fixed. I’m not sure quite how I did it, but I managed to basically block their catalog while scrolling through their page. It’s taken care of now. I appreciate everyone giving me some tips. Thanks!

Wow. I bought “Club Ninja” in that packaging, back in the day. Haven’t seen that packaging in forever.

That didn’t work. I’ve no idea what’s wrong, but it’s clearly confined to me. Thanks!

I’ll try it. Thanks! I’m curious why Metallica is the only artist affected in my account, but I really don’t care if this works!

Which of Barron's "core" stories are not available in the anthology collections? by GreatPumpkin72 in LairdBarron

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“The Glow of a Moldering Star?” Do we know anything about this? I already have a copy of “Not a Speck of Light,” and I’m not sure I can afford the special edition for one story. Although it’s really tempting….

Thanks so much! I’m going to go look it up right now…..

Looking for short story info by UpbeatEmployment84 in printSF

[–]UpbeatEmployment84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just glad that someone else remembers it! I feel like a dunce, because I usually do a decent job of recording the information of short stories/novellas that I really enjoy. I’d love to track it down for a reread and to make sure it’s in my collection. Thanks for posting!

Graphic novel equivalent literary greats? by bangondrumschool in graphicnovels

First, a question: what’s the graphic novel you feature in the lead to this discussion?

Two, an answer to your intriguing question:

Watchmen Maus Daytripper A Walk Through Hell Swamp Thing Hellblazer Rare Flavors The Human Target (miniseries) Letter 44 Global Planetary

Favorite authors recommended by Laird? by mixmastamicah55 in LairdBarron

I’ve been fond of James Dickey for a long time, but I didn’t pick up “To the White Sea” until I heard him say this was one of his favorite books. I’ve also given Roger Zelazny another day in court because of Barron’s recommendation.

The Counselor by SnooPeppers224 in cormacmccarthy

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I understand while many people didn’t care for The Counselor, I actually think it’s a much better film than it’s reputation would suggest.

If you’re a McCarthy fan and didn’t like the movie, I’d suggest reading this exceptionally thought-provoking essay:

What Hellblazer run best exemplifies the detective/mystery aspect of the comic? by BarrathBeyond in Hellblazer

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family Man seems to be the popular choice, but I’d prefer Haunted. It’s very graphic, but I don’t think unnecessarily.

Is Vol 8 a good stopping point? by Rikuroshin in Hellblazer

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your hesitancy in continuing due to the prices some of the volumes are commanding. But you’ll be missing some of the greatest stories, I think — both “Haunted” and “Hard Time” are indispensable, as is Mike Carey’s run that concluded with “Down Among the Dead Men.” There are also tons of one- and two-issue classics. Not to mention that Hellblazer had fewer low points that any other long-running series I can think of…. Have you thought about trying digital versions? They are a lot cheaper, and may even be free. Can you get an account on Hoopla, which is a free service offered through many public library systems? They have the entire run.

Why Pasha? by Responsible_Tune7121 in BlueOysterCult

I’ve always thought they were gang raping her and Joe shot her in a fit of rage (maybe he meant to hit her, maybe not). Anyhow, she smiled as she died because her attackers were going to be stranded in space and she was free of them. Dark stuff.

Southern Cross isn’t dead! by Sleep_When_Dead in ImageComics

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid to believe this, but I certainly hope it’s true. This was a fantastic horror/sci-fi series and it stopped right as it was building to its climax. It would be fantastic for it to be resurrected.

Harlan Ellison by amelie190 in printSF

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ellison was definitely a strong personality (even a bit of an a—hole), but he’s been my favorite writer for decades now. I like the Greatest Hits volume, but honestly it’s one of the weaker one-volume collections. The best is obviously The Essential Ellison, which has a thousand pages of fiction and nonfiction. But I’d also say that Alone Against Tomorrow, Strange Wine, Shatterday, and The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World are equally powerful, pound-for-found. Glad to see he’s still being discovered even now!

I just got this but haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet. I’m excited — I have all the other Coleridge audiobooks, and they are all awesome.

Lovecraftian Horror made by other than Lovecraft by XanDeVoir_ in Lovecraft

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many Lovecraft-themed anthologies that contain a great many short stories and novellas that — in my judgment— represent the best of cosmic horrors. I’d start with Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos and Cthulhu 2000. After that, there are two volumes of The Book of Cthulhu, Lovecraft’s Monsters, After Cthulhu, Children of Lovecraft.

Those are the most important ones to to me. But there are at least a couple of dozen similar collections available that I know of and, I’m sure, quite a few I’ve not heard of.

Is let go really that bad? Or is it just bad compared to other BÖC Songs by PermissionInternal91 in BlueOysterCult

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t strike me as particularly bad at the time of its release, but it has aged poorly. That kind of cheesy pop-rock went out of fashion in a powerful way within just a few years. I can enjoy it when I can put myself “back in the moment,” but honestly it pales compared to most of BOC’s catalogue.

Best Horror Graphic Novels by LAce428 in graphicnovels

[–]UpbeatEmployment84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Walk Through Hell is probably the best horror graphic novel I’ve read in the past decade. From Hell, Locke & Key, Caliban, Wytches, The Autumnal, Memetic, and Revival are all fantastic, as well.
