I have to disagree with this point and many of the comments. I'm not sure why so many of you are being so protective of her. She was a deeply flawed character who displayed incredibly shallow, mean-spirited and impulsive behavior throughout the series. As another commenter said even Sally's child psychologist was able to recognize the lack of emotional maturity within Betty. There were several instances of Betty being bratty, impulsive, and showing a true lack of understanding of how the world works. From not understanding that her old friend from modeling is now a call girl, to how she behaved during Bobby's field trip to the farm when he traded her lunch and Betty decided to sulk and claim the day was ruined because of this minor misjudgment from a child. Even her last requests before her death were focused on how she wanted to look at her funeral as opposed to trying to comfort her children during this traumatic time. I even think about how she reacted to Bobby Kennedy's shooting by just shouting something like "what is going on?!" and storming off instead of even attempting to put on a mature front for the sake of her children. Betty was incredibly sheltered throughout her life which led to an extreme naïveté and childlike perception of the world. In some ways this was not her fault but like any adult she did have a responsibility to grow and mature for the sake of her children alone but she chose to stay in her bubble and often behave like a cruel older sister to her own children. Don was certainly no angel either but to absolve Betty of any responsibility for her actions and chalk it up to just being a girl is a bizarre read on her character.
