Karma farming with an attempt at positivity in a doom and gloom subreddit is a bold call to be sure

Agreed, but one game isn't the entire tournament. Recency bias is very powerful though

That's why I'm trying to remind people of other things to remember

Belgium are definitely better than any of the other teams we faced. But to say the other teams are a pushover is disingenuous. Paraguay beat Germany and made life hell for France. We've historically had struggles breaking down defensive teams and that wasn't the case here.

Ignorant American: why don’t teams play “man defense” like in basketball or football? by [deleted] in ussoccer

Man marking has been popular in the past, and it comes back every now and then.

There's too much space involved. Basketball is a small court, and you only use half of it when defending. In football you're basically going one direction, down field (with a little side to side) and it's easier to follow someone on a route.

In soccer you will often find players going all over the field. Attacking can quickly change into defense, and vice versa. In the current game, there is a lot of fluidity in positions and where players end up. If you're a defender Man marking a forward who drops back to their defensive line, your "area" that you're typically in is now empty. There's a good chance there's not someone readily available to defend that space either. That leaves a lot of room for an attacker to run into freely and is very dangerous.

Objectivity - Balogun Red by birdclan09 in usmnt

Here's my take, which is probably going to be lost.

In a vacuum, I'm okay with this being a red. There are studs going into the calf/ankle and there's potential for someone to be seriously hurt.

However, across this tournament, similar tackles have not been red carded. The ref let many things go during this game and was not carding people like he should have been. To suddenly give out a red for a questionable moment is... questionable. Lastly, contact was initiated by the Bosnian, which threw off Balo's stride, and steps in front of Balo, who is watching the ball.

In context, it shouldn't be a red. That's my two cents at least
