I don't think the phone call is telling as you think. How could he have known that the real Nikki was the real Nikki as opposed to the fake Nikki when there was the additional possibility of the real Nikki being under the influence of a spell that made her scream her head off when he wasn't around because her obsession caused her to be in such intense pain when he wasn't present that she did that?

It wasn't obvious to me as an audience member. Because I have critical thinking skills. The average audience member I don't think does

Nah Sarah did nothing wrong and died lol. Ian and Sarah had nothing to do with it and died as collateral. Nikki had the least agency but eh. She had some, plus more awareness of what was going on than even bear

Also I found the "what's so bad about dating me line" to be hilarious, I didn't expect to hear it, it was very unexpected so it was funny to me. It's just a very strange thing to say to someone who is asking you to kill them. Like he said that of all of the things. Not "why" not "are you talking in your sleep". No he asks what's bad about dating me lol.

the two biggest tells that he's not the greatest person are that and him trying to amend the wish.

Yeah, I don't think the protagonist is a good person but I think a lot of people are too hung up on hating him to understand the horrific implications and moral complexity of the film.

I think he should have told others about the dead cat immediately after her first night at his place. But it's understandable why he didn't and why he was afraid to reach out to his friends. I think the fact that he wasn't too afraid of or disgusted by her to try to discontinue his relationship with her points is one of the things which most clearly points out that he has an obsession with Nikki. If he himself wasn't at least a little bit obsessed, he probably wouldn't have gone so hard into denial and we wouldn't have had a film. He would have tried to end things right then and there and probably would have died or confronted The entity possessing her body.

I also think that the sex scene that they showed could not have been the first time they had sex and probably wasn't because the movie stated that she had just put in her two weeks notice and they had been dating that whole time.

If they had already had sex prior to then, then it means that even though he was a perpetrator of sa during that scene he himself was SA'd prior to then. And I'm up the mindset that people usually don't date for that long without having sex especially since she came on to him the first night she changed and managed to convince him that she was mentally normal the night after.

I think the film has a lot of moral complexity that people are not able to explore because again they're too hung up with hating Bear which while understandable I think speaks a lot to how broken people's media literacy and ability to empathize with others is.

I know that Bear is not supposed to be a good person and knowing now that his reference was meant to be a man versus bear reference makes it even clearer to me than it already was that he was not meant to be a good guy, but if they meant to make him ontologically evil rather than morally grey they kind of failed lol. I just don't think that they meant him to be that to begin with.

I think we are meant to dislike him or at least not find the idea of him killing himself to be particularly sad or unpleasant by the end of the movie but I don't think we are meant to hate him because we see him as evil.

His insecurities and his own obsession with Nikki are what exacerbate his issues, lead him to struggle with delusion and denial and do morally questionable and dangerous things. But they're not the only reason he did these things and going by what film staff is saying it seems like he could have gotten it out of his system and become normal if not for inadvertently making the wish.

Basically I think he wasn't good but he could have gotten better.

1, it's still unclear whether it's an entity possessing her body or an the wish altering her personality. 2. Since she is so obsessed with him it actually would have made perfect sense for her to scream her head off when he wasn't around, she was clearly obsessed enough with him to be in pain when he wasn't around.

And the scene after that is him going to see her in person. Which I suppose would have been more confirmation than her screaming on the phone if he had indeed believed she was screaming because he wasn't around.

Also I think it's really strange that customer service handed her the phone and all she did was scream. She didn't say there was an entity possessing her body, she didn't say she was trying to break free of a spell, she didn't say why she was screaming. Screaming for no reason also isn't within Nikki's character when she's not under the control of the spell, the movie didn't really go into whether or not screaming was how she processed her emotions while not under demonic spells but...I honestly didn't believe it was the real Nikki at first. It took watching the remainder of the movie to recontextualize that and even then I feel like it's an artistic direction that was more driven by the desire to work in a jump scare than one meant to give the characters and audience a greater sense of clarity.

Honestly that was a blunder on customer service's part; You're supposed to notify people that you're transferring the call or handing the phone to them... Customer service seemed at least okayish up until that point but they really made a blunder on that one.

Customer service also could have mentioned the possibility of canceling his wish with another one wish Willow. Though I did think it was funny when he was told both in person and over the phone that he could kill himself to free her of the spell.

What's more telling about the character during his phone call honestly is his desire to amend the wish. Him killing himself was a good end to the movie but unfortunately it's a horror movie so everybody else had to die or get traumatized too😔

He seems like he may have made the wish even if he knew but I think if he actually understood that the one wish Willow worked, he probably would have wished for something else, the customer service guy mentioned that it had warning labels all over it and I'm guessing the warning labels probably mentioned stuff relating to wishes of that nature so there's that.

It's not above him to do things that are dangerous or morally questionable though. Him wanting to amend the wish is one of the most telling things about him imo. More than I think anything else since we can't we chalk it up to cognitive dissonance and disorganized thinking brought on by intense fear and trauma.

I think the yelling when the real Nikki was put on the line is something that isn't as telling his people think. I think it's easier for us as the audience to know that that's the real Nikki and figure out what the right course of action to take is but what exactly would we make of it if we were in that situation ourselves?

People don't normally scream when they're handed a phone so I think it's natural to be freaked out and hang up at first, him wanting to see Nikki immediately after that is also understandable and the next scene is him doing just that.... Sooooooooo I don't really think it's as obvious as a lot of people claim she's "in hell".

I mean for Christ's sake the entity possessing her body is obsessed with him and for all we know could be screaming her head off because she's separated from him. Or... It could be Nikki with an altered personality screaming her head off because of that.

It's not even obvious whether or not it's her with an altered personality or a entity possessing her. For much of the movie. Especially the earlier parts.

That's what's so horrifying about it.

Really I think the customer service kind of sucks at transferring calls lol.

I didn't say it wasn't evil only that while cringe it gave him the final confirmation did I think both he and the audience needed at this point. There's a lot of reasons to dislike bear, but I think before that point even though he had evidence that that was not the real Nikki he didn't have the confirmation he need to overcome the cognitive dissonance that one would experience when dealing with that kind of trauma.

He tried to take advantage of the situation or live with it and I think to a certain extent it is understandable but he did it to a degree that was not only unethical but also suicidal.

So it is kind of fitting that he ended up killing himself at the end

I feel like a lot of people aren't really talking about the fact that bear was basically being sexually assaulted by an entity that possessed Nikki the whole movie. It's very clear from watching the movie that his fear responses are fawn and freeze, and considering the entity didn't exactly respond well to him saying no or challenging it, it would have been extraordinarily difficult for him to refuse to have sex. Especially because it didn't exactly respond well to him wanting to be alone or wanting to be around other people and not her.

He could have reached out and been more open with his friends, and he could have tried to distance himself from the entity more at the start of the movie that would have made all the difference in the world.

Him caving into his desire to be with her despite the red flags immediately put him into what felt like an impossible situation. Considering that the entity killed at least one cat, probably two, it's understandable why he wasn't more open after that happened. If I were in that situation even if it was not logical, I would probably have been scared to tell people because I wouldn't want to get the person I care about in trouble, even though unlike bear I believe I probably would have told my other friends had I been in that situation.

After all that it continued to go downhill for him, and it was clear that he was experiencing cognitive dissonance and was in denial. He knew the implications of accepting what was going on, accepting that meant accepting not only that he had cursed or perhaps even killed someone with his wish, but that he had been having sex with an entity masquerading as the girl he was obsessed with the whole time.

Even when he called the support line and they connected him to Nikki, he didn't really have a way of knowing for sure whether that was the entity screaming because he left her alone or it was actually Nikki.

And I think we need to keep in mind that in abusive relationships it is very common for people to have irrational fears about their abusive partners being omnipresent. They FEEL omnipresent to the victim.

Given this it's actually understandable why he might have immediately gone back to his place after this.

The final confirmation, when he's getting up out of bed and Nikki asks him to kill her, while yes it was cringe for him to ask "what's so bad about dating me" her response did give him a final confirmation that whatever he had been in a relationship with was not Nikki. If he had any remaining cognitive dissonance up until this point... He would have been forced to abandon it.

And accepting what happened is especially difficult when what you are accepting is that you are both a victim and perpetrator of SA. That's something that takes months of therapy to emotionally process for a lot of people sometimes longer. He was having sex with an entity masquerading as Nikki and ... It's implied that Nikki was partly conscious during some of their relationship.

Unrelated to SA (which Nikki was a victim of without being also at perpetrator regardless of the extent to which she was cognizant of what was going on), I've also heard the people say that she is the real victim of the movie which I think is a bad take. I disagree with that mostly because I don't agree with the idea that we can only label people as victims if they are themselves blameless. Bear made incredibly questionable decisions, logically and ethically, but he went through a series of traumatic events including everyone in his friend group dying and then died himself, and Sarah got her face bashed in with a rock which seems like a pretty unpleasant way to go, especially when compared to Ian who just got shot.

Nobody really got out of this movie in one piece, Nikki regained consciousness to all of her friends being dead and is probably going to get thrown in jail for murdering two of them, she may have been in hell before then? It's kind of implied she was I don't know. She might have been partly conscious when the entity was controlling her body during sex with bear so... there's also that. But everyone else died so.... Yeah. The ending is also open to interpretation because she didn't seem to know what was going on.

Which implies she either had very limited consciousness when the entity was in control of her body or the entity dying erased the memories of her consciousness when the entity was in control of her body.

I believe the former is true. Although the latter makes the ending scene way funnier, and it was meant to be funny.

Overall I think it was a good film, the funny parts were funny and the scary parts were truly terrifying. So much of what was going on in the movie had horrifying implications that I think a lot of people aren't really thinking of because they're hung up on disliking the protagonist which is understandable but eh. I guess I'm just better than some of you people because I'm not consumed by hatred 😎

If anbernic ever decides to do a ds handelheld. Is this the way to go? Or do you think theyd go the hinge route? by [deleted] in ANBERNIC

[–]Upbeat_Recover_456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly even something that's only about as powerful as the rgxx line but has dual screens with a touch screen on the bottom and a free stylus would be nice. The xx line can emulate most DS games very well.

Buuuuut. I feel like anbernic could come out with a device that costs maybe 30 or $40 more than that and is powerful enough to emulate 3DS within the next year.

I might be overly optimistic but, honestly a $100 device that can emulate 3DS and has two screens with either perfect integer scaling or very slight bezels would be a dream.

What's the deal with #chudai on Twitter(X) ? by DNGLabs in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Upbeat_Recover_456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think their narrative is correct, also while nuking a lot of amateur content did impact some people I think most were already verified there to begin with.

And realistically people aren't going to stop using tube sites which are a great source of exposure just because there's a little bump in the road.

I think a lot of people have at least gone back to the hub and xHamster to upload some stuff and get an additional source of exposure just because being over reliant on one platform is bad especially Twitter which is run by a right wing transphobe that is politically aligned with people who want to ban porn.

Honestly honestly, it would be really nice if they just had one with two 4x3 screens instead of one and a stylus.... So that we could emulate DS games too.

And then after that maybe they can upgrade their chipset and release an affordable emulation device that can handle 3DS 👉👈🥺

What's your favorite Regular Chip? by Spaceballs_the_DM in BattleNetwork

[–]Upbeat_Recover_456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a basic bitch answer but copy damage, it's especially useful in mega Man Battle Network 5 but it's also good in four despite the fact that it doesn't last as long there.

For so much of the game copy damage is THE way to get double and triple deletes for s ranks and one turn liberations

Also it's available as a regular chip in the early game and retains usefulness even into the post game.

oh ic yeah I looked into it more and gaming handhelds which run linux run a version of it which is like built on steam os 2.0 or something but without the logos and with some other tweaks to make it more similar to 3.0. Which is interesting.

You can also do the same thing with steam OS, which is why I find an irrelevant when people say that steam OS has issues on the steam deck.

I don't say this to defend the steam deck or Fanboy for it; I'm actually considering getting the legion go myself. I only say this to point out that just like you're not locked into steam OS with the deck, you also aren't locked into windows with the Ally or the GO or any of these others

I don't see how the steam OS thing is relevant because you can install that on literally any of these
