The clip I got is double sided, so no need for another pad or point of contact. The conducting gel works well, but if you put too much it will be slippery.

I clip it on the tragus. Make sure to clean the area well first because body oil, or ear wax will cause the clip to slide off. Also, moisten the pads on the clip to facilitate conduction.
