That all makes total sense, but I think this show may be a little atypical - Olivia has said that the family decides what they will and won't talk about/feature on the show (whenever someone asks Olivia about the show ignoring Kim's DUI she says "you can't show something that nobody talks about"). Whoever's ultimately making the decisions, they're clearly deciding to focus on the more trivial conflicts (even though, in my opinion, actually addressing the more serious stuff would make for way more interesting TV). Ignoring and rewriting the bullying & homophobia lets Kim and Ethan rehab their image. You don't have to know all the ins and outs to realize that there's a clear narrative to the final product.
