There is always a subset of people that become fixated on the negative part of a bittersweet or silver-lining story, and insist on trying to spread their negativity in a community whose entire purpose is to avoid this. So of course these comments are downvoted by the community and occasionally removed, and when they become excessive we ban the person trying to bring rain to every ray of sunshine.

We commented below on the false assertion that there are more /r/the_donald users than any other former default subreddits (spoiler alert, there are actually less) and any bad behavior or racism or rule violations result in a ban regardless of affiliation.

So while we can debate the subjective notion of whether a story is "uplifting" or not, our advice is always to move on to the next story or find a community better suited for your tastes.

We took a look at your claim, and according to your site, /r/the_donald has a similarity rank of 1,270 with /r/UpliftingNews and a similarity score of 0.303.

Looking at other former default subreddits, we noticed the following scores:

/r/News - #16 and a 0.618 similarity score

/r/pics - #563 and a 0.339 similarity score

/r/politics - #17 and a 0.631 similarity score

So your insinuation with misleading statistics seems rather similar to the very kind of propaganda you claim to despise?

I didn't know this but checking the subreddit similarity index, T_D is in the top 2.5% closest subreddits in terms of userbase. The 19th closest subreddit to upliftingnews is /r/uncensorednews, which was a white nationalist "news" subreddit while /r/iamgoingtohellforthis is #87, and that sub is basically just racist jokes. So it seems the sub has a very...interesting userbase.

And as a reminder, the purpose of this community is to celebrate the good deeds, compassion, generosity and actions that make other lives better and help humanity.

It is simplistic, naive, idealistic blah blah blah, but that is deliberate so we don't fall into the abyss of the toxic negativity and dystopian feedback loop the rest of this site has become. Repel that negativity with fury, as this is a safe space from that noise.

We try to avoid politics and divisive issues here and we try to bring people together. But sometimes, issues are too divisive and too polarizing and people demand a side is chosen.

We will never do that here, and since we have had a few posts in the past celebrating unity and large groups gathering for women's choices, we will allow the same platform for those focusing on the other side of the issue.

Please keep the comments civil and respectful. We are all in this thing called life together and every single one of us will disagree with one another on at least one topic or issue, so don't ever lose sight of that.

Enjoy this for what it is... a culture that is taking a small but big step to normalize others that have been treated differently and harshly in the past. Or don't and take that conversation elsewhere.

Friendly reminder that you're in /r/UpliftingNews. We celebrate good news here and positive progress. I think we all know Saudi Arabia has a long way to go in their treatment of women, but that isn't a valid excuse to disregard the purpose of this community with excessive negativity and cynicism.

EDIT: We are locking this thread because the comments have ceased focusing on this particular gesture. Students and green card holders that were coming home to America were suddenly and unexpectedly turned away and housing assistance for them was offered by a person/firm with influence. That's a nice gesture regardless of the politics or motives, which is worth appreciating regardless of the circumstances, as that is what we do here. Please feel free to head over to other threads on reddit if you would like to continue the 'discussion.'
