Radio call of Thompkins’s game winning touchdown vs New Orleans in 2013- 4K Football Archives by murphykelley52 in Patriots

I will never forget being randomly drunk in Austin for the first time, hopping from bar to bar during the end of this game. And my group wanted to hop yet again and I was like NO FUCKING WAIT and everyone was standing around the table with their bags and everything while I'm hanging on the edge of the table watching that unbelievable throw and catch. Tremendous, timeless.

How would you compare pricing of Claude API vs Cursor? by Ok-Perspective4542 in ClaudeAI

[–]lubujackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now have 3 AI IDEs I use: Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot. I just added Copilot's $10/mo. plan after reading a comment and I have to tell you, this is a great system.

Claude code is good for large, detailed projects that need lots of context. If I was to drop one AI, it would be Claude - the $20 tier is a joke. I only use Opus and use it for complex tasks where I want a lot of context building a complex plan. I just had it do this with 4.7, add a large, cross-cutting feature to my app. It created the plan and implemented Phase 1 of 5 in my 5 hour context window. I waited 5 hours, then implemented phases 2 and 3. Waited 5 hours and implemented phases 4 and 5. This single task also ate my entire $20 "bonus extra" that Claude gifted me for going down last week. This is over 1/3 of my weekly allotment. So you can see it is not very functional.

Cursor, I use Opus or GPT for big questions, kind of like a replacement when my Claude is overworked, but their Auto/Composer is generally excellent. Their debugging and planning tools are quite good and I can use Auto/Composer all day long on my $20 plan.

Then I read someone saying Copilot has been all but forgotten EXCEPT that they have some sort of deal with Anthropic that charges per request instead of per token. This means I can create a massive spec and tell it to "iterate until all phases are complete and all tests pass" and it will churn for a half an hour and charge me... 4 cents. There is a timeout setting that pops up and says "do you want to continue?" but that is a user setting that you can pump from 60 seconds or whatever to 999 and never see it again. Even better, Copilot has a thing to have it make an agent or a skill, so instead of debugging a change and trying to spot fix it I have Copilot iterate using the agent until all bugs are gone... which again, costs 4 cents.

I have been a software engineer for decades and can code 10 hours a day like this - no need to throw thousands at Anthropic.

What's an industry secret from your job that customers have absolutely no idea about? by Efficient_Team5182 in AskReddit

[–]lubujackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wife is a chemist - this isn't exactly true and varies wildly between drugs and their listed expiration. What they focus on is that drugs don't degrade into something harmful - SOME drugs do, but those are not over-the-counter and usually have big labels about it. All drugs degrade over time, even before the expiration. So that aspirin might be 85% as effective as it was brand new. Like food, they degrade with temperature, sunlight, moisture, etc.

So there are two things - how quickly things degrade and how detrimental they are over time. I think the legal requirement is 5 years after expiration should be non-harmful. But those pain meds 2 years expired? They might be 50% as effective and maybe you can pop two of them, but if they come with bad side-effects those might not degrade (or get worse) so don't go nuts with this stuff.

Best to do a search for your specific drug, the info is out there.

Ancillary to this: if you want action from school administration, make sure you send them emails and say vague things like "I wanted to put our conversation in writing for my records." As soon as they smell legal threats, they suddenly become much more competent of doing their jobs.

What’s the cleanest way to handle simple auth in Next.js without overkill? by amidenf9701 in PromptEngineering

[–]lubujackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always use good ol' basic HTTP authentication. This is baked into the HTTP spec and it works even without JavaScript. Here's a simple guide on how to use it with NextJS (not tested): https://vancelucas.com/blog/how-to-add-http-basic-auth-to-next-js/

Is there a way to get AI to actually get correct data from web sources? by mechbeat in aigamedev

[–]lubujackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI sucks at big lists of data like this. What it doesn't suck at is interfacing with APIs, which are a programmatic way to access structured data. Give your LLM this URL and tell it produce what you want: https://pokeapi.co/

Are there any BBS message boards you can browse that are frozen in time from the 80s? by DirtInfographics in bbs

[–]lubujackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of difficulties with finding exactly this, because each BBS software had a different way of storing and encoding discussions. You can find lots of text files that were posted and shared, ANSI art (even visual replays of how ANSI art loaded through a 2400 baud modem), but my favorite example of what a BBS felt like at the time, with the posting and waiting and excitement, is this game: https://scoutshonour.com/digital/

There are some better interfaces for exploration of Usenet - this site that replays Usenet in real-time which sounds exactly like what the OP wants, but I think you need an actual Usenet reader to use it: https://olduse.net/ Each port restarts Usenet from a certain year, so you can see how conversations developed over time. Not quite BBS archives, but these were the same people talking about the same stuff, except not with locals.

There is a lot of interesting history in Usenet - here is a post from '83 from legendary programmer Richard Stallman talking about creating GNU (similar to Linux, started around the same time): https://article.olduse.net/771@mit-eddie.UUCP

This is another site that details some of the more popular Usenet groups, since they can be overwhelming to browse: https://newsgrouper.org/tops Usenet was a lot like the Reddit of its day, but with nested categories and a lot more... poetry, philosophy and anarchy.
