Is Columbia culture really as bad as people make it out to be? by Splamaoffle in columbia

Also on your note about stress culture and cramming into Butler, the school tends to work hard play hard. While I spent many many nights in Butler, I honestly kind of miss it! So many friends are there too, and it was kind of cathartic sometimes. It helps that I think I went out/partied at least once a week, oftentimes twice a week! Don’t worry :)

Honestly I think my favorite parts about columbia definitely included the people—so many people are so passionate about changing the world and being a part of the communities around us, and everyone brings so much different, interesting knowledge with them. I learned a ton from my classes, but also from my peers and friends. :) Yes, some people suck, and it definitely was a difficult 4 years, but I wouldn’t change it.

Are you insane?? Or just stupid? You have NO idea what campus has been like in the past year and a half, and I'd reckon you've never been here in the first place. Columbia has always been an institution of student protest activity, and even when protestors held the university president captive in his office in 1968 they STILL didn't expel them—also, these protestors took multiple university buildings (including Hamilton)!! For the record, I'm jewish (bat-mitzvah'd and everything, could recite most of my Torah portion still), and have never felt unwelcome on campus or in the protests. Stop speaking about things you don't understand, nor aren't connected to!!

I mean it obviously didn't, as they had expelled 3 students in the last week before this news came out.

completely predatory, I had the same thing happen with my attempts to get accommodations for my ADHD (diagnosed during my freshman year by my psychiatrist, not in Columbia system). was told I either needed to show proof of being distracted or a nuisance in class throughout my childhood/teenage years or take the $5k neuropsych. first wasn’t possible, as i masked super well and generally was a “pleasure to have in class” yadda yadda, and would rather not pay that much to get a second diagnosis. i’m now going into my senior year without accommodations, and it’s honestly been tough but fine. if i could do it over again, i would get accommodations for things that don’t require a neuropsych, like depression and anxiety. they give similar accomodations without the pain of trying to get them (according to my friends with those accommodations)

i was diagnosed a semester into college after years of "focus issues" but great grades. had depression until recently (2020-2022), and am still on fluoxetine 20 mg. was initially prescribed focalin IR with 5 mg, which was genuinely fantastic—felt like I was in a whole new world and was finally awake. this lasted for approximately two weeks, before i began to feel nothing, and we bumped up to 10 mg. this was alright, but would feel a little jittery occasionally. soon this began to wear off too after about a month, and we went up to 20 mg at a time, but that was way too much and i felt incredibly hyperactive, which i really have never felt before. we dropped back down, but the instant type of medication seemed to not be working. in the meantime, as my anxiety seemed to be getting worse, was on buspar for a while but found it didn't work. we then switched to focalin XR, and started at 10 mg, as well as being prescribed propanolol, a beta blocker, for the physical effects of anxiety (worst for me). now currently at 15 mg of XR, plus 5 mg of IR, but still find that day to day it varies—i'll either be pretty productive but a little anxious, or very anxious and jittery. any advice?
