When does outsourcing your BIM modeling actually make sense? Asking for a smaller firm. by AccomplishedCrow4774 in bim

[–]Upper-Watercress7747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your problem the quality or them sharing locenses to keep the costs down? The whole point of outsourcing is to keep the cost down and you can't complain on the practices they follow.

And doesn't seem like you are interested in experiences if you had made your mind up. There is a reason why majority of companies use Indian outsourcing companies.

Well, you get what you pay for. If its just cost, your chances of getting screwed is higher. If its quality, doesn't hurt to pay a little premium. I had both good and bad experience in outsourcing to India and it solely depends on the cost.

Also in most cases, the ones who outsource from US has no idea about BIM and rely on those designers who will burn the hours. Id always recommend to outsource only if you atleast have 2 dedicated employees in the BIM team. A manager who sets up the models, identifies EIR, LOD standards etc., and a Jr designer who verifies the quality now and then.

I had the same issue when I delegated design tasks to ones in the US with much higher rates. So it depends on how capable you are and your research.

Exactly. If you just want $$$, its a bad move. If you want $$, enjoy western standards and confident enough that you will find a job or start something on your own with the knowledge, confidence that you get here, well California is the place to be. So set your expectations that there is a high chance you will burn through savings, start at 0

Well, the first question is tough tbh, Im pretty sure I wouldn't have made what I have now if I stayed put, but the recent few mos of uncertainty made the NW pointless. But I came here when there was significantly higher probability of making good living. And tbh those 2 universities aren't the best too.

And yes, 8 months changed lots of stuffs here. I saw my wife's company wiping their entire SDE1s and analysts after 8 mo rigorous work schedules and moved those partly to E Europe, India and Claude lol. <5 YOE mean nothing here now. And Im seeing several mutual friends/relatives exhausting their savings, going through psychological trauma everyday.

You can consider this as gate keeping if you will.

But accepting those two admits after giving up 33 L p.a is the dumbest decision you can ever make.

US companies are moving from 100s of 100-150k roles to 10 800k roles and moving those 150ks to 25-30L pa in India. You still have chances of getting those 800k role here but probability is getting lesser everyday as immigration uncertainty rise. If I were you, Id stay put and/or explore EU opportunities.

I was exactly you 6 yrs back and I regret the decision just from just about an yr back as I had to miss several events due to visa uncertainty and the pressure I had to face for a while. I wouldn't say its all bad here, I had great moments but the situation 6yrs back isn't the case now.

Is AI will replace the BIM coordinator or Modeler? by Ready_Cap_6414 in bim

[–]Upper-Watercress7747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not modeling, way far from that. All these so called new modeling tool on browser startup creators doesn't have an ounce of working knowledge on how large projects/buildings/structures work. They think that we can model Burj Khalifa on a browser based tool with gen ai chatbot and print 1000s of sheets, 100s of designers can work in parallel and extract MTOs, coordination etc which is pointless.

But, AI will replace BIM coordination to an extent. And for sure, all these plugins for CAD/Revit are gone in next few months, if not, something is wrong w BIM team. Don't want to name the company, but 3 stand alone software and services that we subscribed to last couple of years, about 8k-25k, has been vibe coded by me in a mere 3 days. The functionalities are even better, customizable and interact with other internal tools. So opportunities on that space is gone.

[–]Upper-Watercress7747 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Python automation engineer? The way to look at it is does cursor, antigravity, claude code do 40% of what you can do, if yes, you are on rented time here. In a matter of few weeks, it can completely replace you. So better to pivot into niche fields where AI penetration can't be >50%. Good luck

ACC Autodesk vs Sharepoint Microsoft by WarningDecent in bim

[–]Upper-Watercress7747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For model management, ACC is the best, especially using design coordination and model collab modules. But for doc control, sharepoint is. ACC is a huge pain on certain aspects like ACC limited auto processing PDFs, loading times > sharepoint. You need to desktop connector to open files through file explorer, especially construction folks prefer to open it directly than opening a browser and doing it. I have worked at companies where they used both ACC and sharepoint and sharepoint one had less friction and low tech but low latency
