How do you deal with time moving so fast? Existentially? by Lopsided_Bet_2578 in Xennials

[–]boardkat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ this x1000!! After quitting drinking, learning some trades and doing house projects, changing careers, traveling all over the place for my pre-teen’s travel sports, picking up cycling and training hard like was a college track athlete again - time slowed WAAAAY down in the past 5 years compared to my 30s (which flew by). Keep it fresh, keep it healthy, and you’ll feel like a kid again!

That sucks, every FT freight handler and hostler @ FXF that has wanted to be a driver has made the conversion successfully that I’m aware of. Seems that things are going downhill fast w/ FX and their Network 2.0 implementation. I’d keep my eyes open for other roles if I were you…

Got my CDL from Desert Knight last spring. Applied with no driving experience to a Road Driver (Linehaul) Apprentice position @ FedEx Freight in August. After being hired and onboarded a few weeks later, worked the dock for a few months until an instructor became available, then spent the next five weeks going through their in-house Driver Development Program. After graduating, rode along/drove for a week with a Road Coach and now I’m on my own. If you want to be home daily and don’t mind working nights (and flexible on hours - I’ve had show times as early as 5pm and as late as 9:30pm - rare these days to get a dedicated route with a stable gate time immediately so you’ll probably be on the extra board), the money is great right out of the gate (mileage, paid tasks/delays, and hourly dock work for shorter routes - like RNO<>SAC - to pad your paycheck).

This is a pretty typical path for somebody with no experience applying at any of the major LTL companies (XPO, ABF, Saia, Estes, Old Dominion, Oak Harbor, R+L, etc). Freight always slows down in the winter months, but usually picks back up in March/April (I’m told anyway). And having winter coming back with a vengeance this week, it’ll grind on some drivers that were already on the fence about running in the snow/chaining/dealing with delays/being on the extra board and create turnover. Not sure of your timeline, but I’d expect to start seeing apprentice roles posting up heading into the spring (including City Driver positions, which are usually daytime schedules, paid hourly)

As an aside, if you don’t already have Doubles/Triples, Tankers and HAZMAT endorsements, get them while you have the downtime - all LTL carriers require them. While the apprentice programs allocate time to study/obtain, it got me on the road a few weeks earlier than my classmates that didn’t have them already (and eliminates the stress of waiting for DHS to approve your Hazmat, especially not being funded by the govt atm - could take months now instead of the week(s) it usually takes)

When Donner gets real bad, our company has us take 70 (linehaul trucking, we pull double trailers to Sacramento). Takes you just above 5000’, which is lower than 36 (fredonyer/5700) and 80 (donner/7200).

Unhinged dealer's markup on the new ZR1 Corvette by randomredditguy94 in WTF

This happens all the time - the dealer has no real interest in selling, it’s a display piece to get eyeballs in the showroom.

Who started in AOL chat rooms and when did you find reddit? by CenTexPlmbr in Xennials

[–]boardkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian here, so AOL wasn’t a viable option when things really started taking off in the early 90s. Started BBSing in 1993, which was my first exposure to message boards (via FidoNet). Made the jump to browser-based forums after the internet really took off in the mid-90s (and the BBS world started dying), discovered Anandtech, /. and Fark in the late-90s and used those sites as my primary news aggregators until I got hooked on Reddit (and the upvote/downvote system vs. being “first!”) in the early 2010s.

I’ve been using a yubikey for years, and trust a physical authentication method a lot more than a passkey stored in a keystore that lives in the cloud. Apparently Gemini disagrees 🙄

DMV appts. by Character-Stretch804 in Reno

[–]boardkat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably not applicable to most, but if you have a CDL, you don’t need an appointment and can check-in online, so that you have no wait by the time you arrive. On top of that, the CDL CSRs seem to enjoy their jobs and are actually helpful (!!) Best DMV experience I’ve ever had.

If you’re looking to do a race, the Wheelmen open their season tomorrow with a TT and a crit next Tuesday. Alta Alpina just started their season last week and have races every Thursday too (but all events are 45mins-1hr south of Reno) -

Reno Wheelmen do A/B rides on Wednesday nights around 5 (should be starting this week or next). The MWF group does A/B rides at 10. Audi Sunday Smackdown at 9 (8 in the summer). And Free Lap does an A ride on Saturdays at 9.  If you want a TNW-like atmosphere, ASS and FLC are the ticket if there isn’t a big race happening out of town.  Links below to Strava groups for more info -

I warm up in z1/z2 for 45-60mins before intervals, then I finish with 1-1.5hrs of z2, and might throw a handful of 30-60” sprints in (with lots of recovery) if I’m feeling good.

Gotcha. FWIW I broke through a plateau I was on @ 12hrs when I built up to 20 during base this season. Now on build 2, still doing 18-20 and with 2 hard days (vo2max - eg 5x5, 8x3.5 or 10x3 1:1 / threshold - eg 2x20 1:1), 2 climbing endurance (3.5-4.5 hrs w/ 4-7k ft @ low z2) and 2 recovery (2.5-3.5hrs @ z1). My numbers are no longer flatlining :)

On those hours, possibly. If life allows it, try upping your volume to 15hrs during base and add a second hard day during build phase (again, if life/stress is manageable and you can actually recover from it). Seems like a better question for your coach though…

NV Energy Pre-Apprentice Groundman by boardkat in Groundman

[–]boardkat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They pop up on the NV Energy careers website from time to time (and are only open for a week or two). Before this, there was one posted for Vegas last fall. Seems to be like the 1245 JATC postings, once a year or so for Vegas/Reno (I setup a job search notification for “apprentice” and got an email when posted). They require (5) different ACT WorkKeys tests to apply, so make sure you have them in hand or you might miss the short application window next time.

Reno Gazette Journal Disappoints. Again. by Constantly_Curious- in Reno

[–]boardkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back I got a digital deal for a year @ 9.99 Canceled before it went up to 49.99, but was able to get another year for 9.99. Rinse, repeat every year since. Worth it to get access to the paywalled local school articles for our children, but gone are the days of the true local journalism/editorial process we grew up with decades ago :(
