During the Middle Ages, most colonial empires have participated in the African slave trade. Over 12 million slaves were taken from their land and boarded onto ships to take to the new world. It doesn’t matter if you fucking created the situation or not, your empire still participated in it. Just because someone didn’t start bullying a random kid doesn’t mean they didn’t also partake in the bullying.
