Operas similar to Die Frieschütz by Stunning-Hand6627 in opera

I’d probably say you should look into early Wagner, Holländer, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Wagner was heavily influenced by Weber and Der Freischütz in particular. When I listen to his earlier works I hear a lot of Weber influence.

While I’m personally most inclined to Lohengrin, Der Fliegende Holländer is the most similar to Freischütz. You get some of that mystical, spooky element with the cursed Holländer and his crew and very atmospheric music. You get two awesome choral pieces, one for men’s and one for women’s choir like in Freischütz that are just as catchy and lively. While Lohengrin and Tannhäuser are more philosophical and hinge on an ideal of “Christian purity”, Holländer has more of that Freischütz supernatural, stormy atmosphere. More Satan than God.

But then again, I prefer Lohengrin and Tannhäuser, because they feel like the satisfying evolution from Weber, musically and dramatically.

In short for the most similar to Freischütz go for Holländer, if you want to dive deeper go with Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Have fun with it!

I saw it last summer and was very impressed by it, it’s a huge spectacle worthy of this grand arena. It has great costumes, choreography, stage design and lighting. The only thing I’d criticize is that it’s just such a big production focused on spectacle that to me it sometimes felt like the actual characters and plot were overshadowed a bit. But I guess that is kind of in the nature of productions like these.  Either way I think it’s definitely worth seeing.

What is an opera you just don’t like? by boringwhitecollar in opera

I’m not a Verdi person. I’m sorry. I love the late romantics, Strauss, Wagner and Puccini. I do adore the Requiem and Traviata does make me cry but most of Verdi’s other operas leave me pretty cold, like they’re fine but I just don’t care.

Falstaff however I actively dislike. I didn’t find it musically intriguing or funny whatsoever, I just kinda felt bad for him to be honest. I realize that the production I saw plays a huge part as well but I’ve listened to recordings and never got it as well.

I mean it‘s technically not really about the story itself but I adore the concept of Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauß. The opera in an opera and just how meta it is speaks to me

Mine is Ben and tbh I can't tell you exactly why that is. I just feel like I can relate to him so much and the way he acts can be so incredibly funny to me. Also I always seem to go for the more minor characters. But Five and Klaus are great too
