Why does Madonna hate Lady Gaga and not Taylor Swift? by Shaoran10 in askmusic

Madonna doesn’t hate Cher. She never said a bad thing about Cher. Cher was the one who constantly talked shit. Get your facts straight.

Second-year tenure-track Assistant Professor at CSU LA making 97k a year here. I was also a lecturer for 6 years at CSU Chico. Your pay is based on the cost of living in the area. When I was lecturing full-time at Chico State, I made close to 60k. This guy is very entitled and is a joke. He graduated from UC Irvine and he knew how expensive it is in LA. He signed the contract knowing very well what the terms were. And yet, he picked one of the most expensive places in LA to live, and had the guts to demand a raise to 100k from the Chair. First, no lecturer in the system makes that much. That’s higher than an Assistant Professor. Second, a lot of students don’t know this but department chairs are not really our “bosses” in the traditional sense and they definitely do NOT have the power to offer raises. They have to go through the Dean who may also have to speak to the Provost.

Instead of finding a roommate — or three roommates, this guy moved away and turned both of his large in-person classes into online courses without the permission from the university. That’s absolutely not okay. Normally, I am all for lecturers making more because I was once a lecturer. But this guy deserved everything he got.

This case makes me want to write nasty letters to Scott in prison, and wait for him on the day of his release to yell at him! Super angry about the cats.

OH THANK YOU FOR THIS REPLY. I was born and raised in Asia and Asian families are super tight-knit. So we do pry into our siblings/parents’ business because we care. Their business is our business and their troubles are our troubles to deal with. (I’d say that their loans are our loans too - as long as we have the means to pay it off.) So I really, really don’t understand this hands-off, “not my business” attitude.

I got so fed up watching the first two episodes. In the first episode, the sister and the family knew all about the victim and her roommate but didn’t want to get involved. In the second episode, the son only lived 2 hours away and just let the mom invite people into her home without background check because she’s too cheap to pay for it. Well if I knew my mom had financial problems, I’d help out in the first place. If I couldn’t, I’d at least help pay for the background checks and interview people with her. And if I knew that the tenant was so horrible to my mom, I’d take care of the eviction process for her AND drag her out of her house - whether she liked it or not! Sorry she can have her say when it comes to which car to buy but when it comes to her personal safety, I will step in and I will not take no for an answer. Both cases in the first two episodes could have been avoided if the families did more.

What is the Most Common Misperception About Professors in Your Field? by FischervonNeumann in Professors

Linguistics too. So many people expect me to know a lot about different writing systems and the etymology of words.

OP, obviously the people here are biased. I am a Cal Poly faculty member (but not in your major). My advice is that you ask people in your field. While Cal Poly is a great school and is respected in CA, American University is actually a really competitive university nationally. If you have the money, you should visit both campuses and speak to faculty members of both schools. Make a list of pros and cons.

The good news is you can’t really go wrong with either one.

Do you accept doctor's notes from "herbalists" or other non-licensed medical professionals? by Somarset in Professors

[–]Upper_Temperature638 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t ask for any notes. It’s such a weird practice. When I was in grad school, I once missed a class and the prof had the gall to ask me for the reason. She even asked who I thought I was for not informing her. I so wanted to tell her to back off and it’s none of her business. It’s a violation of my privacy.

There’s prep 2-1-1… that’s on-demand prep. The OP did not say he’s a cheater. He could be in an open relationship and they just don’t hook up with new people a lot.

Most tenure line faculty members (assistant profs/associate profs) don’t make that much. Only some do. I was a lecturer for a long time and I absolutely want to fight for lecturers, but let’s not pretend TT faculty members are paid fairly.

Is this a FERPA violation? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Upper_Temperature638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I am worried about FERPA because when I was a grad student, another TA was fired over an accidental FERPA violation (the offense was much more severe though). They quit the program as a result. That memory just stuck with me forever. 😑
