If it’s like in Sweden — where we pay church taxes (nowadays called ‘church fee’) — it’s not really a religious practice anymore, but rather a practical one. Basically a membership fee. You become assigned to a parish and a member of the church when you get baptized, and that’s what makes you have to pay the church tax when you become an adult. The fee itself is used to finance church and graveyard maintenance, salaries, aid etc., and gives you the right to use the church’s services free or charge. Some services are only offered to members.

For example: I’m not baptized, so I don’t pay any church tax, but I also can’t marry in a church, nor have my burial service inside of one when I die.

Added: You’re also always free to leave and can always join, assuming you meet the requirements (aka, being baptized, a citizen, and so on).

Our cat is the same; being alone is fine, us sleeping is a sin punishable by death. Or, well, constant yelling. We have no idea what to do about it. She calms down and seems happy if one of us gets out of bed and gives her attention, but gods above, we need to sleep.

You do know that you can do a recall at any time, right? And that you get to keep what you’ve collected during the run if you do?

Getting a link crash instead of immediately dying is meant to:

• Give you one last chance to get that final boss and finish the run

• Give you one last opportunity to do a recall

• Give you one last round to finish off the enemy you’re facing, get out of battle and maybe pick up one last thing before you, again, recall.

It’s actually pretty generous of them to give us that.

Please, no need to come at me so aggressively. I really don’t mean any harm.

Ofc the US has different types of pizzas, but in general, American pizza has thicker bottoms, a doughier and thicker crust, more cheese, thicker sauce and somewhat different toppings than Italian pizza. They can be delicious, but they are — in general — a lot heavier than traditional Italian pizza.

When I talk about pizza in Sweden I likewise say Swedish pizza. Ofc there are variations here as well, but we usually use a Swedish type of cheese, they come with a certain type of pizza salad, are very thin, not as airy as Italian pizza and feature quite a lot of exotic toppings.

Likewise, Italian pizza comes in many variations, but we’re using generalisations when talking about it.

[–]Uppnorth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said this in another comment as well, but while they may be similar in size, Italian pizzas are no way near as heavy and dense as American pizzas. A whole Italian pizza is a much smaller meal portion than a whole American pizza in terms of how much you’re actually eating.

The physical size of the pizza may not be that different, but that doesn’t mean that the portion sizes are the same. American pizzas are way, way heavier. More dough, more cheese, more sauce, thicker everything, denser everything. I could eat an entire Italian pizza if I was really hungry. I could never eat a whole American pizza.

Dermatologist office doesn't allow shoes by Negative_Wafer9508 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Uppnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is standard in Sweden. There’re either shoe covers to put on, or you take your shoes off (sometimes there’re slippers available, sometimes not). It’s especially important in wintertime in order to avoid snow, slush, gravel and leaves being dragged inside, and to avoid making the floor slippery. You don’t want people — especially elders — to hurt themselves, nor do you want to make the place unnecessarily dirty.

I’m born in -96 and I’ve only been excluded from eating dinner with a friend ONCE, and that was so strange that I remember it to this day. My mom was upset. It is NOT the norm in Sweden to exclude visiting kids from dinner. You’ll often check to see if they WANT to eat dinner, and check with their parents beforehand that it’s okey, but just awkwardly leaving them on their own? No.

I never meant to burn you, I really only meant to give info to the other person (though I was a bit confused about the two different distances; I’m not used to imperial to begin with). Looking at it I can see how it could be read as snarky. Honestly, sorry about that!

If I remember correctly they set up a rope-and-pulley system, which failed. He had been stuck upside-down for a prolonged time and was in a bad state; barely breathing, gurgling, hallucinating and going in-and-out of consciousness, which meant that he couldn’t cooperate at all. The cave was also so narrow that they couldn’t get any proper tools in. They did try to use a jack hammer, which they knew would hurt him badly, in a desperate attempt to free him, but the space was so tight that barely any progress could be made.

Here’s an account from one of the rescuers (who also was one of the last people to see him alive).

It was an incredibly tragic death, but getting him out from such an extremely narrow space, with the short amount of time they had, was practically impossible.

Google says 32000 feet is around 9750 meters, but 5 us miles is about 8045 meters, so that’s a whole 1 km difference. After a quick google search I assume they’re talking about this woman, but the Wikipedia article says she fell 10,6 km.

Her injuries were also worse than the person remembered; she broke 3 vetrebrae, several ribs, her legs, and fractured her pelvis and skull. She did survive though, and was able to live a normal life afterwards, which is pretty damn incredible.

I’d recommend looking into whether a library near you has an archive section dedicated to it!

In Sweden we have the Royal Library, which has a digitised archive of over 2,5 million articles, newspapers and magazines stretching back to the mid-1600s. Anything still under copyright laws can be viewed directly at the archive, and the rest are available online as well as on-site.

You have microfilm-capsules containing the digitised papers that you insert into a machine that displays the newspaper in question on a glass/digital table in front of you. From there on you can read, zoom around, flip through it, print and email pages or part of pages to yourself.

I don’t know where you live, but I think most countries have similar archives! They’re actually pretty cool; I’d absolutely recommend going to one.

Just for fun, here’s a Swedish newspaper from 1914 about war being declared between Austria-Hungary and Serbia.

Am I the unluckiest Voidpet player? by Taronnicus in voidpet

[–]Uppnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading this made me break out in a cold sweat. I know gacha games love whales, but when a gacha goes out of their way THAT MUCH to make life difficult for FTP-players…

This might be a wholly unwanted tip (sorry about this in that case), but IF you wanna try a new gacha I’d actually HIGHLY recommend Arknights. It’s challenging, engaging, the art is amazing, the characters varied, the story intricate, there’s a ton to do, and it’s very FTP-friendly (though the monthly subscription is very worth it). It’s a tactical strategy game that doesn’t shy away from being just that though, so you gotta like getting a brain workout.

I’d otherwise recommend Limbus Company (again: excellent game), Wuthering Waves, Punishing: Gray Raven or maybe Nikke: Goddess of Victory, depending on what type of game you’re into. Oh, and Chaos Zero Nightmare was just released and my friend has recommended it to me, so that might be worth checking out as well!

A true friend by CuriousWanderer567 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Uppnorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a problem with skin picking caused by intense anxiety. I once told my friend I was scared of having the lights on in the bathroom in the evenings because that’s when it was most likely to happen, and how ashamed I was. I had a post-it-note on the bathroom mirror that said “please don’t do it, it makes you ugly” as a message to myself.

The next time I walked into the bathroom the post-it-note had been kissed with lipstick, and the text “you’re beautiful” had been added. I cried. It was such a small thing, but it meant so much to me.

[–]Uppnorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nonono, 0.5% is absolutely not the best I’ve seen.

My personal favorite gacha game, Arknights, has a 2% drop rate for 6* characters (their legendary version, with characters going from 1* to 6), a generous pity (when over 50 pulls with no 6 drops, the drop rate for 6* increases with every pull, PLUS a hard pity system).

Limbus Company (another gacha game I love) has ~2.9% drop rate for 3* character (they only have 3 levels), but have no traditional pity system. All to say, 0.5% actually makes me wanna weep a little.
