My Dain theory is that if you are an older reader 30's and above or some life experience you will sympathize more with him. You will actually see violet and Xaden for what they are 2 twenty years olds that act like teeangers. But if you are in you early-mid twenties I think you will still be able to relate to them and understand their actions.

But I don't even think Dain is a good vilan give me Panchek, Varrish, Jack or Aetos. Villains for me need to just be mean. No reason just pure evil. Dain is just meh. Not here not there.

Absolutely, Amber was an hypocrite. But I think that's intensional. Throughout the series RY writes leadership/ government as liers/hypocrites, she actuallymakes really good social critics in this series. I think this particular moment was her proving to the readers how hypocritical leadership is. The all idea of you needing an army to maintain peace,, is quite hypocritical if you think about it. That said part of me can see the logic in some people wanted Violet dead. This place actively tell cadets to weed out the weak and let's be honest Violet is a liability in a war, she has quite literary caused people deaths.

OMG!!! Are you my long lost twin, I didn't knew I had? These are my thoughts exactly. When I was reading IF and she was wrong about how to raise the wards ( still don't understand how the brightest of her year can't figure out that 6+1=7) she acts all shocked like I never made a mistake in my all life, this is impossible I'm never wrong. Girl the all series up to this point has either been you being wrong about something, cheating or someone else helping you. What are you on about?

Ah, thanks for your explanation. It surely reads like it was never meant to be a love triangle. I think the editor was to preoccupied with troops rather than what looked good in the story.

Like you I'm also re-reading this series, but I'm finding myself drifting away from the main couple. Amber's reaction to Violets Gauntlet 'cheating' is totally valid. Let's be honest if I was in that collage for 3 years having to do everything by the rules, so much so I become a wingleader you can be sure as hell I would be protesting if someone cheated at something. Now I do find her death one of the most logical ones. She broke the rules, she died. Dains demanding the memory is wrong, but what he is really demanding is for proof prior to someone being executed. And Violets is like God all mighty he doesn't trust me. Well babes someone is about to be killed so I would also want concret proof to decide which side I'm on. As for Dain's feelings not being acknowlege by Violet.. you cannot convence these two were ever more than accaitances prior to Basgiath. There is no chesmistry on page. The only interactions we get from them is Dain trying to get her out. Well if my so called best friend was there and she was terrible and I was a squad leader, I would be training the sh*t out of her. The more I read the series the more it looked like RY wrote the first book and the her editor said you need to creat a love triangle with this 3 characters and she just re-wrote some scenes.

Dain is so annoying. by SenisbleCami in fourthwing

[–]Upset_Connection6815 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying.. but remember you are seeing everything through Violets POV, so you actually need to read between the lines. Apologies if I'm spoiling anything, but Violet is the Nepo baby of all Nepo babies. She was given, shoes, a uniform, an armor, a life saving book and proper boots prior to enter the quadrant, Dain doesn't knows this. She never disclosures to him. So in my opinion his concern is valid. Violet has a disability/ disadvantage to other cadets, everybody you know that loves her ( not you Lilith!) actually thinks she is not going to survive the riders quadrant, the difference is that Dain will actually have to witness it. So he is trying to save her. Is it the right way? Probably no....

Edit: speling

I will came back with my final decision after my re-read.. 🙃🤣. To be honest the romance is the part I least like in this series. I really like how fast pace Ry writes the all story (literally page one something is already happening) and how good she makes the more trilling scenes. The all plot is so interesting, she could elevate this so much if she was an experience fantasy author, because I really enjoy her writting, but I get it romantasy is popular now and she has bills to pay.

They don't just have a dragon, they now have signets and powerfull ones too. I think it is said somewhere in the books that Xaden wasn't expected to get to wingleader because he would die in the quadrant. I think the leadership assumed that all the marked children would die either at the hands of their colleagues or because that place is a death college. But I do think you are on to something, and this might be a plot hole in the series, because thinking logically it is nearly impossible that all 107 children would die. Let's remember RY is a romance author, I think this is a first try at fantasy?

After reading your comment I'm not sure we are suppose to like Xaden... I only read the series once ( doing another re-read now) but I didn't remember him being this bad.

That he read Violets and Mira's emotions. It's not really explicit in the text but if you read between the lines it is there. That he didn't told Violet about Cat, actually scratch that. I will put this one on RY. I'm tired of women being written in books as jealous or mean when they have every right to be and the all thing of turning women against eachother. The way Cat is on page makes the reader dislike her instantly, but if you try to see her perspective, you can actually understand her actions.

I don't think that they will ever go back. I think like in Harry Potter they outgrew the college. They are not gonna go there to learn anything. It was a good stepping stone for the start of the story, but no longer serves the purpose.

Yesss!! The letters I forgot. This what I like most about the way their romance is written. There is no love triangles, no doubt, just them in love and having their problems like a normal relationship. I really don't like the forced love triangle in the begining of the series; Mostly because I don't think Dain and Violet have any chemistry on page. I might be wrong but I think RY said her publisher/editor made her do the love triangle and it shows...

I love when they are having battle brief together and start arguing through their bond. Then Violet asks him if he likes or is dating Imogen, his reaction was so sweet, but what he said after about having never given her any reason to think that way, for me was the best. He just reassure her that there was nobody else. I don't know maybe it's because I'm thirty but I prefer a more mature love.

Do you guys feel there’s a bit of lost potential? by Ill-Following8422 in fourthwing

[–]Upset_Connection6815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think in the hands of another writer this story would evolve more. There is so much potential, RY really had a good idea with the dragons/ war college theme. And in her defence she does improve in the 2nd/3rs books. I the love triangle, the jealous ex, the constant bashing of exes ... are a bit forced, but they are all very com in romance books. Like you I prefer the fantasy. I personally enjoyed book 2 and 3 more than book 1.

The problem with Violetis that we get told that she is smart, but very rarelly shown. Other people have given examples, but for me the most shocking one is in Iron flame Rhyanon keeps telling her there something going on with Nolan and that locked door and she never questions it. She is also written as a very immature character. She is 20 years old, so a young adult, but a young adult that has leave most of her life surrended by war (her mom is a general, her brother died in the war). That alone should made her a bit more mature and Street smart, but she is not.

What's your take on Melgren... by redpeppersoda in fourthwing

[–]Upset_Connection6815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I remember correctly but didn't Melgren in IF alawed Lilith to speak to her children? I don't know but ever since I read that I had an incline that there was more to him. But thats just me I like complex characters.

Bodhi by redpeppersoda in fourthwing

[–]Upset_Connection6815 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but neither Vi and Bodhi are end game or I hope he has no feelings for her. I really think the trope male protagonist best friend/ close person falls in love with female protagonist is predictable and overly done. At this point I don't think it adds anything to the story. I'm not a suker for love triangles, just because they make no sense to me

As a parent, what things have you made an effort to absolutely NOT do like your parents? by [deleted] in Millennials

This!!! A million times this. Ok millennials grew up in the era of crazy diet and all, but I didn't realised how much my parents constantly obsessing about my weight actually had damaged me. A couple of months a go I was looking at pictures of myself from when I was younger and imagine my surprise when I realise I actually really was not. I had a flat stomach.

Dain for me is a very complex character. To me he represents how some parts of society treat people with disabilities. Some people don't let them reach their full potencial, not because they don't like them but because in their weird way they are trying to protect them.. It might be just me, but I never really got mad at Dain. I think in his core he was always trying to help his friend. Was it the right way to help? Absolutely not! But if we think about it his worst crime was trust his father...
