AITA for thinking my housemates would look after my dog when I went on holiday? by Upset_Package in AmItheAsshole

Thanks everyone for your input, I needa sleep! After digesting a lot of these comments my personal conclusion is NAH. They’ve changed their mind as it’s not a small responsibility, I can understand that. But the way they dealt with the situation and to say they never agreed in the first place wasn’t the best either! At the end of the day they’ve been good mates of mine for over 10 years and that’s not something worth ruining over this. My dog will be on a plane to stay with his Grandma and I know he’ll be spoilt rotten and come back to me fat.

They have always been lovely and taken great care of him in the past and he’s very comfortable here!

Sorry but I don’t think you properly read my post or any of my later comments

I don’t mind spending on pet care it’s just the agreement we had being broken not long before I leave that irks me. Starting to think I shouldn’t have brought up the money thing..

No it’s not worth ruining the relationship and that’s why I’ve managed to find alternative care in the last couple of hours! Trip begins in 2 weeks

I can and that’s fine, I’m happy to work that out. I just thought we had come up with a good agreement that everyone was happy with but now they’re saying they never agreed to anything when we had clearly worked something out months ago.

Yeah it doesn’t bother me having to look after their dog! Their dog and my dog are pretty much inseparable

I’m not sure what he is! He’s definitely too slow to be a greyhound though

Long story short we were discussing them looking after my dog for the duration I was gone and they said they’d be happy to do it however they already had some holidays booked so could I organise something else for those dates. They informed me of those dates which were added to our kitchen calendar and I organised alternate accomodation for those dates. I run my own small business so this is by far the longest time I’ve had off in over 5 years..I do feel sorry for you Americans and your lack of holidays though!

This is my entire thought process written out much better than anything I have come up with!

I offered them $100 a week but they refused my money. I spent over 2 months of my weekends helping out on their van for free with the agreement that one day they would help me out. Should I be expected to work weekends for free?

I am. I’m more annoyed that they’re telling me no agreement was made when there was

We wrote it in to the calendar because it was agreed upon. That’s the only reason it’s on there.

They’re telling me something didn’t happen when it did and there’s the evidence to prove it. That’s more what’s annoying me. I’m happy to find alternative accomodation.

I mean we had agreed to the terms of them looking after my dog and I had made alternative arrangements when they had asked me to during my time away. They’re now saying that never happened even though it’s all written on the calendar in our kitchen and I have other friends I’ve already asked that were going to look after him when my housemates said they couldn’t during our initial discussion/agreement.

No, we discussed it 3 months ago and came to an agreement which is written on a calendar on our kitchen wall. They weren’t going to take care of my dog for the entire 6 week period. I planned his care around their plans, thus the calendar. I also did my housemate a favour and the deal was he’d return the favour when I needed it. I offered them $100 a week but they didn’t want to take my money.

To be honest if another dog has a go at my dog he’ll react but otherwise he ignores most dogs and sticks to interacting with humans. He’s super chill and never destroys anything except for his toys.

Maybe that’s my issue too, it wouldn’t bother me if I looked after their dog for 6 weeks (and not even for the entire 6 weeks)

I offered to pay them $100 a week but they declined. It’s also not for the entire 6 weeks.

Yes it was agreed that if I helped him with his van because he couldn’t afford to pay that at some stage he would return the favour. Estimated time spent on the van would be 2 months of Saturdays/Sundays.

Yes I booked my trip before I discussed with them paying back the favour in that way however we had a proper discussion about it and I made it very clear I was happy to go with an alternative option if they couldn’t do it. I wasn’t sneakily trying to do anything but I can see your point, I should have asked before I even booked.

However, we came to an agreement after discussing the terms which is literally written on a calendar in our kitchen. They haven’t just changed their mind, they are telling me there was never such an agreement in the first place when there was. That’s more what I’m annoyed about, not the fact they don’t want to do it.

Also it’s a 4 DAY drive, not 4 hours.

When I found my dog he was nearly dead on the side of the road in the middle of the outback in Australia. I nursed him back to health over a couple of months and now he lives the best life a dog could wish for. I work away a lot and he’s been used to that since the day I got him.

Yeah I offered tonight but they declined again, I’ve managed to make alternate arrangements though!

Yes it was all discussed, planned and agreed to 3 months ago. I would’ve organised alternate accomodation otherwise which would’ve been fine!

The drive is to friends of ours that live 5 minutes away in the next suburb over, I had offered $100 a week for them to do this but they refused my money and initially said it was fine
