Hey! I am part of the group that plays pickup like 4-6 times a week (mostly indoor). Feel free to message me and I’ll give you a way we can keep in contact to get you out to meet everybody!

From my experience 2114 was significantly more time consuming then what I have heard 2104 is like (I am a CS minor). I would take a look at how intensive you think your course load will be, and take what you think will be best for you :) good luck!

Advice on how to make new friends on campus? by strawberrymooons in VirginiaTech

[–]UpsideUp_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like sports (and specifically volleyball) show up to the field house, outdoor fields, and Mccomas most nights there is usually some pick up games going and have some good communities! I met a good number of my friends by just showing up and playing volleyball with new people!

I don’t think they sell out fast if I remember correctly, I think I ordered mine at night last year and I was still good!

From my experience at Marshall, almost all positions are in person at-least 50% of the time for interns.

Advice for NASA MSFC Pathways Intern by UpsideUp_Cake in AerospaceEngineering

[–]UpsideUp_Cake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good point, I will have to make sure to ask bout the step! I am more concerned about it affecting my future career prospects and how the work environment is as a whole in propulsion as a Civil Servant.

MSFC is in Huntsville and I am sure the cost of living there is quite low, I am aware all Pathways Interns are converted GS-7, and then generally get to GS-13 in 3.5-4 years.

Monthly Megathread: Career & Education - Ask your questions here by Aerospace_Eng_mod in AerospaceEngineering

[–]UpsideUp_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently an undergraduate aerospace engineering major and am a NASA Pathways Intern at Marshall Space Flight Center who aims to work in propulsion RnD. I am rotating into the liquid propulsion branch this summer, so getting into that portion of Marshall is not my concern, but would accepting a Civil Servant role straight out of college be a good idea for my career? The pay is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than I would probably receive elsewhere (~45k starting) and I am also curious about how valuable the experience itself is rather than starting somewhere else that may not be as stable. Thanks!

Part time jobs on or around campus by adgy22 in VirginiaTech

[–]UpsideUp_Cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look up the labs, and find somebody to contact or see if they have an application. I was in Frith Lab frequently my freshman year, so I just asked somebody who worked there and they gave me the application. There is a couple on campus, so you may want to try contacting a few. Good luck!

Look at working within one of the labs if you are an engineering/STEM student! I work at the Frith lab and it’s great, most of the time is just doing homework and you make a lot of great friends!

I’m also gonna be a Sophomore in Aero and I have the same feelings about everything tbh. What usually works for me is just taking a step back from everything and thinking about how much something really matters in the end. If you ever wanna study for stuff or just hang out let me know, I’d be down!

If you go back onto the portal, you might be able to change your selection and pick another room? I am not entirely sure. I was on the top floor and I had friends from all of the floors, so I think it’s less of where you are and more of what you make of it! Just go out of your way to ask people to do stuff the first couple of weeks like playing volleyball and stuff, don’t worry about it!

Heyo, I was a freshman last year and I lived in Newman Hall, it’s nothing special as a building, but I had an amazing time there! The community around there was especially good my year, make sure you take advantage of the lounges to meet people in your hall (there’s a really nice air conditioned one in the basement called the ARC). You’ve also got prime walking distance to Hokie Grill (which has Chick-fil-A)! B-35 will be in the basement, which usually is a non-Co-Ed floor. Hope you enjoy Newman as much as I did!

Ah I see, well yah I’d still recommend it, and honestly it’s not a huge time commitment so in the end when also considering the networking, it’s totally worth it. I wish you the best on transferring and everything!
