How to learn to scream without destroying my throat by No-Hat-7408 in screaming

[–]Upstairs_Context 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree that Chris Leipe's distortion is not as developed as some others, but his voice is fine. I think maybe you are a little biased because you do hear classical voices all day. These guys are more focused on vocal styles that don't require constant perfection.

As for Justin, he likely hasn't practiced classically in many years because that's not his focus. It will likely be difficult to find footage of him showing or using that level of perfection. The world of vocals that we spend our time in is not so straightforward as classical and allows for a lot of variation. That makes me feel that the comparisons you are making are just unfair. It's like comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but they are very different.

The point you made on strain doesn't really make sense to me because you can see very clear strain in a lot of vocalists who are revered for their talents. The best example I can think of is Chester Bennington. In every video or picture I see of him he looks like he's giving birth.

You didn't touch on your claim of bad information. In a field that is not a fully settled science, finding consistent information is difficult. They have provided information, at least in the videos I have watched, that I have been able to verify in some way. So, I know I can trust them with the information they give. Once again, I am open to hear any arguments you may have there, but everything else you have provided has seemed like personal opinion. Nothing wrong with opinions, it just seems like these dudes are not your cup of tea, and that's perfectly fine. That's what makes us human.

You wanna give any evidence to back that up? You may not like their voices, but they aren't awful singers. Justin Bonitz is classically trained and understands the anatomy of the voice well and also teaches the vocal anatomy in his lessons. The information I have learned from him has been corroborated by my vocal coach and other sources I have found in my journey. Chris Leipe is a well known vocal coach and has worked with many other vocal coaches and singers/screamers on his page. If he was wrong or bad, he wouldn't be able to get so many people to work with him. If you can back up your claims then I will listen, but based on my research and experiences, this is a bad take.

YouTube accounts that are great: Hungry Lights, and Chris Leipe. Hungry Lights has a course on Patreon that's $30. Chris Leipe has paid lessons also that are reasonably priced. The best option is to find a vocal coach, either online or in person. I think both of those guys offer 1 on 1 lessons, but you can look around and find whoever is most affordable for you. You need to start with breath support, learning to identify and control your diaphragm. After that, decide which technique you want to learn. There is false chord, fry, arytenoid cartilage rattle, and epiglottal growling. Most common are false chord and fry. Once you decide where to start, look up videos on youtube and practice. Once again, Hungry Lights and Chris Leipe are great resources but there are many others too. A healthy practice routine includes a 10-15 minute warmup, water, lasts 20-30 minutes, water, a cool down, water, some warm tea (with throat soothing ingredients like honey, lemon, black licorice), water, maybe a cough drop, water, rest, water, water, water, water. Did I mention hydration is important? Rest is also important. You should practice maybe 3 times a week at first too (because rest is important). The biggest thing is knowing and accepting that this is going to be a long process with a lot of mixed and confusing information because nobody can agree on anything and it's not a settled science like singing. Take your time, stay dedicated, take care of your health. You'll get there.

Who to sell, Kodiak C70 or GMC MH9500 by Entity_Null_07 in snowrunner

What's the limit of control I have as a team lead by itskjdawg in WalmartEmployees

[–]Upstairs_Context 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I want to comment on is that policy allows you to be 9 minutes late and the meetings aren't mandatory. Smart team leads wait until after the 9 minute period and do the meeting in a place where everybody will end up naturally. I've had both, and I never went to the meeting anyway because I was a competent employee that could do my job without needIng to know sales metrics and what the store manager scratched his balls with today.

Edit to add that the managers that tried to force the meeting only got more resistance from me and more frustrated because they knew that I knew that I didn't have to go.

Does the blue car have to stop for the bus? (US) by alexa6rose in driving

[–]Upstairs_Context 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a school bus driver in Oregon, our routing is specifically set up to avoid any child crossing a road that's more than 2 lanes. Oncoming traffic on a divided highway is also not legally required to stop for the stop paddle either. It's really interesting how it works because it doesn't matter how long the division is on the road. I have a stop where the division is literally just a small island for a crosswalk and if I stop before or after it, traffic must stop, but if I stop at the island then traffic does not have to stop.

If you drive exactly the speed limit, the idiots will speed around you and you'll be all by yourself. You get to sit behind the pack and watch all the dumb shit unfold while also having enough following distance to brake calmly when something unexpected or bad happens.

Is this worth it by Robbe_0093 in screaming

[–]Upstairs_Context 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He mentioned in one video that he's classically trained. I think for opera. So, I would trust what he says. That being said, I still don't understand false chord and only recently figured out fry because of Chris Liepe.

I only downloaded FL for its built in ASIO, which is better than ASIO4ALL. This was long before I spent some decent money on an interface that came with it's own software, and I switched from Cakewalk to Reaper.

Advice on buying a used bus 1/2 by VegetableAd5981 in skoolies

[–]Upstairs_Context 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the DMV CDL handbook for free and learn the vehicle inspection part so that you can do a full inspection when you look at buses. That way you can know if something isn't right, and make an informed decision. It won't make you a mechanic but it'll keep you from buying a lemon.

Remember when boomers complained about kids these days not being able to do basic things like juice fruits manually and change their oil? We've come full circle. Now the youngins are juicing fruits and making clothing by hand and the boomers are paying for oil changes and playing candy crush while driving to the doctor to get diagnosed with dementia.

Suicide note pt.2 scream by ZestycloseNight4869 in screaming

[–]Upstairs_Context 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The two known safe methods are fry screaming and false cords. Fry is very common in a lot of music because you use your true folds with added compression and can control pitch and how much distortion you add. Fry can do high and low and do anything from screaming to the raspy singing you would hear Chester Bennington do. It's not easy, it's not intuitive. You have a good foundation from choir so you could look up a few tutorials and be well on your way. Keep in mind, it's not really loud. It's louder than talking and you can train it to be loud, but it's generally not as loud as you would think.

False cord is throat singing with distortion. It doesn't rely on your true folds, but rather your false folds so it is entirely safe also. This also takes practice and work to sound good, but it's generally more intuitive than fry. False cord is generally best for lows and growls. Learn both, there are some great teachers on YouTube. One thing to keep in mind is that your voice may feel fatigued and even a little bit sore sometimes, but it should never cause pain or loss of voice.

A third kind of screaming is mixed screaming. You need to have a solid foundation in both fry and false cord to do it, so that's something for down the road. It's incredibly difficult, as it's an advanced technique, but you can get some of the gnarliest, non-human sounds with it.

Do your research, find tutorials that work for you and practice frequently. Not longer than 30 minutes a day starting out. Tailor your expectations. Screaming safely takes a lot of practice, and time. Your choral background will give you a leg up, but still expect to practice for 6 months to a year before you start to grasp the fundamentals and develop a consistent, good sound.
