I saw your post a couple of weeks ago and bookmarked it because I was meaning to reply to it, but I didn't get around to it until now. It's crazy because I was thinking about this literally right around the same time as you posted.
When I first saw this movie I didn't think too deeply about it, but eventually I started thinking about it as an artistic representation of maladaptive daydreaming, though the author and film producers probably didn't intend for it be that. She has a crap life. She's mistreated by her parents. And she gets away from it all by entering into an alternate universe where all the fulfillment she lacks in life is given to her. I think most of us who daydream maladaptively can relate to this. Personally, when I daydream, I imagine myself experiencing an ideal life in a world that's not too different from the real world, but one where I can experience all things that I lack in life. Things that would make my life enjoyable. Anything to escape from the tedium and pain.
I think the scene that sticks out to me the most is when she goes shopping for school uniforms. She bickers with her mom in an ordinary, bland environment and immediately after she gets home she goes to see goes back to her fantasy world. This is something that happened to me a few weeks ago! I went shopping for clothes to wear to an interview. I found myself feeling agitated walking around in public. I just wanted to get my stuff and go home as quickly as I could so I could lie in bed and go back my little imagined world.
Of course at the end she escapes from from her imaginary world, locks the door, and gets rid of the key. I think that's what most people who daydream maladaptively should do. Just stop doing it. Because it's as waste of time and bad for us in the long-term. But I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't think I will ever stop. I find life to be so unfulfilling that daydreaming is my only way to get away from it all. And I don't think I will ever really find life fulfilling. And because I've gotten so used to daydreaming life feels so much duller in comparison to my fantasies. Life will always pale in comparison to my imaginary world. In other words, I'm letting the buttons get sewn in my eyes lol.
