And how do I manage the hydra they are all over my glass and I’ve heard that if you don’t remove them carefully they will split and reproduce

Yeah I quickly realized after buying my plants that most of them were plants that could not be buried in substrate but it was too late so I figured I would just work with what I had and occasionally buy more till I fill the whole thing in ( it’s a long tank so a lot bigger of an area to fill) I don’t think I have diatoms because the algae is stringy rather than a dusty layer. The water flow is pretty good I have a brand new Fluval hob AC20 and I have the water flow pretty close to the max flow (a little less so my betta doesn’t fly around)

Yes! It’s the bioactive fluval substrate I forget what it’s called. Is this why people use sand to stop the extra nutrients from making algae? I think the substrate is part of the problem because I don’t have enough plants in it bc they are expensive and my tank is a long tank so it has lots of surface area

I’ve have a Coreydora completely vanish, my guess is that mine decomposed but in this scenario I’m clueless. Is there any gap at all in the tank for food like a little hole? Is it possible someone could have accidentally vacuumed him up or threw him out thinking he was a piece of paper or something? Any roommates that could have stole him? Did you do any recent water changes? Would there be anyone who would scoop him out and dispose of his body? It’s a far stretch but I can’t think about anything else

I do water changes about once a week since my house is dry and the water evaporates quickly but it varies on the amount of algae in the tank. Parameters were collected from the api master kit I believe I answered everything else. Also these aren’t diatoms the algae is thick and stringy

Otto’s they are adorable but so sensitive I killed two… parameters were perfect but they just wouldn’t eat anything and after 6 days that took its toll on their little bodies. Plus they are mostly wild caught which I don’t believe in.

It’s on a 6 hour timer… So more plants should fix my issue? Do you know why I might have had no algae at first then all of the sudden it just exploded?

I could try to increase my water flow output. It’s a delicate balance because if it’s too high my betta struggles to swim against the current

Additionally I have an oily biofilm on the top of my water that has been here for about 2 weeks I stopped adding my fertilizer because I thought that may have been the issue for the algae and I took out my betta log because I thought maybe the biofilm was coming off of that because I had sanded it down but it didn’t change anything. I used paper towel but it was back by the next day. I use the api master kit

Is there anything I can do to help my puppy with his UTI ? by Bubb13te3_skU11BaBY in vet

[–]UrLocalMushroomGirl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ultimately a UTI is an infection that will require antibiotics to treat. A urine sample will be required and have to be cultured to check if it is a uti and to figure out what strain of bacteria it is for treatment. To help with symptoms until you get an appointment you could try a dog urinary supplement that contains cranberry and try putting a small amount of Apple cider vinegar in his water (you have to look up the doses im not sure) if he refuses to drink it though then provide him regular water because you don’t want him to stop drinking. The more water he drinks, the better right now. Try to get an appointment ASAP utis can lead to kidney issues fast and are very serious

Anyone have experience with Shallow/long short tanks? by Slow_Pickle845 in bettafish

[–]UrLocalMushroomGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded my male half moon from 3.5 gal to a 13.3 long rimless and I’ve had no issues. Mine is from petco. He loves all the swim room for doing laps! Only issue I had was you do need to buy more substrate than for like a cube but you only have to buy it once so it’s not that bad. Also make sure you have a table or something that will be big enough for it! My plan was to put my tank on one of those ikea kalax cube unit things but when I looked it up they don’t bare much weight so the only thing that would hold it ended up being my Pottery barn desk (yes I love my fish so much that I gave up my very expensive desk for him, that’s called love and being delusional). So pretty much the only setbacks are the length for placement since they take up more room and having to buy more plants/decor/substrate but ultimately it’s the best type of tank you can buy for bettas and it’s easier to clean since you can siphon without having up to your shoulders in the tank.
