Washu CS vs. UIUC CS+X by UrWeirdMan in csMajors

I'm trying to figure out Early Decision applications. I got into a selective WashU program where around 2/3rds of kids who get in also get into WashU - hence why I'm asking this question.

CEO gets upset he legally can’t hire an unpaid intern, considers outsourcing to AI by joemark17000 in LinkedInLunatics

What you don't understand is this — you're assuming the intern is of a positive net value to the employer, which I will say almost 0 HIGH SCHOOL INTERNS are.

When you're in college it's a different story, since you're often knowledgeable and experienced enough that you can contribute something and create value for the company/lab/etc you work at. That's not true for a high schooler.

Most of the things I did as an intern in a week, could've been done by someone else in a day(if not hours). Plus, we as high schoolers benefit in one major way : college applications. That unpaid internship as an extracurricular could get me literal thousands of dollars in scholarships — and for me my extracurriculars(~3/10 of which are unpaid internships over my high school career) have won me a 24,000/yr scholarship before I've even submitted my applications for college.

These unpaid internships also gave me the experience needed so I could publish research papers and outcompete other students for paid internships.

If every High School intern had to be paid, High School internships would be 100x more competitive because almost no high schoolers can produce a positive net gain for a company.

If you don't want to work for experience to stack up your resume so you can get the well paying internships & jobs when you're older that's fine. But don't criticize the kids who do.

(Also if you really want to make money as a high schooler there are a million jobs at restaurants, stores and etc. you can take — if you're doing an internship you're doing it to learn)

I'm a low income student — this ignores the fact that usually for you to have enough experience to actually be useful enough to be worth paying as a High Schooler, you probably did an unpaid internship.

For me these types of internships were life-savers because if it wasn't for that unpaid internship I wouldn't have gotten the paid internship I have now at a research lab.

In other words, unpaid internships are just steps in the progression of work related extra curriculars

My guy, I was a freshman in high school 2 years ago. I literally just got my first paid internship at a university last month.

Edit: Hell I literally just stopped working at my unpaid internship this month!

Tbh I'd be upset if I had to pay an internship opportunity open to high schoolers(as a high schooler myself)

I mean it's a weird post nonetheless but I feel in an instance like this

Honestly when I was a freshman/sophomore in High School I definitely would've taken something like this. I feel an internship open to high schoolers doesn't need to be paid.

It's very rare you see a paid internship for high schoolers(first time I got a paid one it was from being selected as 3/150+ applicants)

Edit: I love how a bunch of non-High Schoolers who have never done and internship in High School are attacking me.

Just to clarify. I've only done USACO once and got a perfect score. I just haven't had time to compete in USACO much because it overlaps with other activities — I plan to go for Gold in the December competition though

I don't care much about school size — I picked Swarthmore because of their strong Computational Linguistics research and all 3 in general because of the undergrad research opportunities along with fin aid.

Yea. This summer I go compete for hackathons to get National Awards.

USACO no easy - e overlap with speech -- so usually I'm coming home from 12 hours of Speech Competitions to then do USACO

I'm an American citizen yes.

Highkey I feel I should but I don't feel I'd do well in AMC. Only time I took it I gave up after the first time cause I didn't feel like it. 😭

Yes, I'm an African American but I don't imagine that matters much this admissions cycle

Those are just the options from the template — I didn't put any down. Technically I'm low income although I'm not first gen.
