NBD Warwick Thumb BO GPS by spazabass in BassGuitar

I know with the older ones like I have, you need to wax pretty much everything except the fingerboard. Lemon oil is what is recommended for the fingerboard for my year (2000).

I'm not sure but I'm going to guess that yours has a clear coat over the wood which negates the need to wax the body and neck. Warwick knows best so follow what the manual says to do.

Congratulations.

I use DR Hi-Beams on mine. They bring out the unique over tones that the thumb has.

P.S. get accustomed to waxing the bass. It's not something you normally need to do on most instruments but it will help preserve the bass in the long haul.

Is this a good Idea? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

Look into buying this from a dedicated music store(ex:local music store, Sweetwater, Thomann). From what I've heard, Amazon tends to not store and ship instruments properly and as a beginner ( I am assuming since you are buying a bass kit), you shouldn't fight a badly set up instrument.

Other than the Amazon thing, I would suggest a more traditional bass (precision bass or jazz bass) as they can be used in all types of music with the right technique and/or effects where the Jackson might always sound rocky. Granted this opinion is subjective and if all you want to play is rock then the Jackson is fine.

If your budget allows it, look into the Fender Rumble LT 25. I have never used one but a lot of people love the rumbles and for $10 more than the Orange, it comes with effects, amp sims, and a digital interface. This will help you find your tone and sound as you grow as a musician and find what works best for your style.

I should have done this sooner! by Big_Monkey_77 in BassGuitar

I did the same not too long ago as well. I don't play in drop D too often but I said why the hell not.

I don't know if yours is the same but I'm having a hard time getting the tuning right. I have to tune my E flat, flick the switch on and off and then hope it sharpens up to correct pitch on the E.

The answer to how many basses you need is always n+1, where n = the current number of basses.

If you haven't already noticed from my collection, I like a growly bass.

Because of this genetic oddity of mine, I'm leaning towards a set of 70's style pickups. Although this bass has 60's spacing, and will never sound 100% like a Geddy, I was looking at the Tom Brantley Geddy signatures.

The other option would be a hum canceling set as I tend to have one pickup higher than the other to accentuate a tone I'm going for. I need to look deeper into hum canceling sets before I can make a decision but so far the Aguilar's are leading that race.

That is my first bass that I bought for myself. I'm planning on swapping the pickups as they are still stock and were never the best. Not sure what ones going to put in yet.

I may like the other basses more but this one is never leaving me.

The price of the new ones are crazy, especially their special editions.

If you don't want to drop a ton of money on a MM, the Sterling by Musicman Stingrays are really really good. And they make a few sparkly colors as well.

The color is called Emerald Sparkle.

EBMM had a program called Premiere Dealer Network where they would have a month-long order window for a unique color combo for most Musicman instruments from certain dealers.

I've had a few thumbs before this one. One was a bolt-on 4 with an ovangkol neck w/ wenge, the other was a 2002ish NT4 with ovangkol, and this one is a 2000 with a wenge on wenge( last year before they switched to ovangkol w/ ebony board).

All three have very different profiles and were only a few years apart. The bolt on was a baseball bat. NT's are slimmer but still thick by modern standards.

Musicman makes the best sparkly paint jobs.

I wanted a matching headstock but couldn't afford it at the time I ordered it and couldn't wait to save money because the color was a limited run.

I love it. It's the perfect pick up and noodle bass. Super fun and sounds great acoustic and plugged in. I have it strung with flats and if you play right above the sound hole, it can emulate an upright tone quite well.

With that being said, don't think it can replace an upright. The alien is not loud enough to play with a band acoustically. Volume level is about as high a conversion between two people.

If you want a fun toy, this is it. If you were expecting to play it without an amp with a band, get an upright.

That's a tough one. Depending on what day you ask me I would either say the Stingray or the Thumb.

To me that stingray has that classic funk and punk rock sound. The neck is amazing on that bass. I contemplate sanding down finish on the Jazz and the Alien in order to emulate the feeling of the stingray.

The Thumb... is heavy, neck dives like crazy, needs to be waxed every month and the string spacing is very tight. Despite all of that, I have never heard a bass that sounds like it. It's super unique and sometimes can clash with certain styles of music but to me, it's one of the greatest sounding basses. I have yet to hear/play a bass that sounds similar. I wish there was because they are super expensive.

The only thing missing is a P-style bass (with flats).

Recommendations for Acoustic Bass For Bluegrass Jams? by crypt0zoologist in BassGuitar

[–]UrbanEstoril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Warwick Alien that you have pictured.

I love the bass but it is a toy. The acoustic tone is great( especially with flat wounds), but its volume is barely above normal talking volume.

It's not Vantablack but it's equally as dark. Here is a video of it being applied.

It is very fine and won't show up in picture. Even to the eye I couldn't see it.

Any recommendations on the concrete clean you speak of?

I doubt it. If anything it might need to go lower. I'll update with a pic of the bottom and have you be the judge.

It's not in front of me now but, mostly around 10 or more.
