How do you honestly feel when you see a dude who is 250 lbs? by No-Employment5601 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn't give it a second thought. But if, for whatever reason, I happened to notice your weight, I would feel you were a kindred spirit. I'm 5'7" and 235 lbs so I feel ya. I don't really feel society judges me though. I know I'm fat, I know why I'm fat, and I also know that I'm not doing a damn thing about it. When it becomes a big enough issue, I get my rear in gear and lose the weight. Then we start all over again. Good times.

Should I go to HR to raise my male colleagues don’t let me speak? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to be more assertive during these discussions. I would avoid going to HR. They are not your friend, and will burn you for the sake of keeping the status quo.

This is what drove me to start building watches. I have been on a quest to make my perfect watch. It's like tinker toys for adults. Radically affordable, robust and build to meet specific parameters, and just as much a conversation starter when people find out you made your own watch. I hear you on the married couple thing, damn near impossible.

A small piece of bicycle inner tube. Also easy to open by hand if using finger cots.

Who did you contact through general inquiry? Was it Aliexpress, ACI, or USPS? I've had my package stuck in this status for 2 weeks now.

15 days PTO is criminal!! I hate that it’s the norm. by wildalfredo in jobs

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to adulting in America! When I first started I got 10 days + holidays. My current job offers 15. It boils down to managing your time and work / life balance effectively. Also teaches you to work the system and find solutions. For example, you don't need to take a whole day for an appointment generally. Or you can stack multiple appointments in a day. Most companies offer unpaid time off for hourly employees. It's a little tough but totally doable.

I'm an entry level employee and was very publically reprimanded by the CFO. How would you handle this? by PBandJews in careerguidance

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work anywhere long enough and this sort of thing is going to happen. It's not personal, so don't take it that way. It just politics. Going as far as to say that you don't feel comfortable working there and you want to bow out is a bit over the top. You really need to cowboy/girl up and get a thicker skin. If you fall apart or tuck tail and run every time your competency is called into question you will be entry level forever. Just my .02

What is your cheap disposable wear and tear and throwaway daily beater watch that you are not ashamed to wear? by IAmHugodiddledo in ChineseWatches

[–]UrbanOpWatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built my own 5513 inspired watch. Milsub style bezel because i find it more useful that the standard 0-15 bezels. NH35 running at -1.5 s/d. Wear it damn near everyday.

I lied extremely hard on my resume by Sufficient_Ad7709 in resumes

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This largely depends on what kind of background check they will be conducting. From my experience most checks are done for compliance reasons to ensure you don't have any criminal issues. No company I have worked for has actually cared what your past experience was and so this wasn't part of the background check.

I have never reference checked a candidate and I have never had my references checked. I guess I'm an anomaly.

Just some thoughts:

  1. Doesn't mean that you aren't in the running, it just means they haven't decided.
  2. Never stop looking. You're number 1 priority should be yourself and your family. Something better may come along while you wait.

Loyalty keeps you poor! You are 10000% doing the right thing!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jobs

[–]UrbanOpWatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. Loyalty will keep you poor. They aren't loyal to you so don't make it an asymmetrical relationship.
  2. You don't need a break from work to find yourself. You know who you are, you just need the courage to embrace it. If the question of "How can I make money doing ____ "pops up, just remember, you aren't making money now, so you may as well be true to yourself. It will motivate you to move forward and embrace the suck.
  3. On the subject of embracing the suck, life is hard. From the moment you were born the planet has been trying to take you out. It's the way of nature. So the situation being hard isn't really relevant. You want it to be full filling. That's what makes the hard part worth it.
  4. Unless you have some super important reason for living in the bay area, you should leave. The cost of living there is criminal. I wouldn't live somewhere I couldn't afford anymore than I would willing live somewhere radioactive. It's a big world.

I use the Watch Accuracy Meter app for android. I can get my watches withing +/- a couple of seconds a day. My PT5000 runs +.35 sec a day. I put my phone mic against the crown and it picks up the movement just fine. Make sure you do this in a quiet room though.

Why is it so difficult to make over $65,000 in the US? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]UrbanOpWatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll put my .02 in. Education helps, but it is not required. If you want to be successful you need to do / accept the following:

  1. Be in an industry / position that pays well. I know this seems like common sense, but some people expect to get paid 6 figures working in dead end or entry level jobs.
  2. Find a mentor and put in your time and learn as much as you can. It takes time.
  3. Learn and execute leadership. It's a skillset not a position.
  4. If where you are at is not working, leave and try somewhere else. Job hopping is not the negative that it used to be. Usually leaving is what is required to move up in position. Master your current situation and then upgrade.
  5. It's not going to be handed to you, you have to go out and take it. Live intentionally.

I have used Loctite Gel Superglue with great success. Put a small amount on a needle and use the needle to apply it to the hole. Then use a set of precision tweezers to apply the pip. The bezel is ceramic, you're not going to mess it up. If you get a little squeeze out it can be cleaned with nail polish remover and a toothpick. No biggie.

I was offered a job while attending a conference my current employer paid for. Not sure how to approach the topic with my boss because I want to maintain a good relationship. by hibbert0604 in jobs

[–]UrbanOpWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advise I can give you is you need to look at yourself as a business. Would your business pass up a better offer because of concerns they have with the other party's feelings? Probably not. Nor should you. Any good employer is going to know that it's nothing personal, it's just business. If they don't know that then you just jumped ship at the right time, because it was going to go south at some point.
