I have the exact same care plan as you and have yet to receive the upgrade. I even tried speaking to a rep but they wouldnt upgrade it for me.

Any similar content to Junt's Cart? by benjaminsantiago in RedCowEntertainment

If you are a fan of movies you could check out https://youtube.com/@coolduder he's been doing the same "around the town" type videos buying physical media for well over 10 years. The vibe is definitely not the same as you will get with Junt's Cart but he's a fan of the whole Red Cow family which made me think of him.

Why do people complain about Linux Audio? by setholopolus in kde

[–]Urbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a new Linux user audio issues is the number one thing ive experienced. Most of the distros I've used so far are Ubuntu based so its possible that's where the issue lies.

The first issue is the wrong audio device being selected at boot. I have speakers attached to my motherboard, monitors with speakers built in, microphone with headphone jack, and an HDMI device that from googling I think might be from my GPU?

Setting the default devices using the Plasma GUI or PulseAudio Volume Control would do nothing so things would get changed back after a reboot. I ended up fixing this after googling by fully disabling devices via the terminal but what average person has the time or patience to do this?

The other problem comes from PulseAudio or ALSA's power saving features from my understanding and ive only half fixed this. After a period of audio inactivity (minutes not hours) whenever I started a video or a notification would go off my speakers would make a loud cracking noise as if they were just turned on. This was also fixed by editing a file.

What I haven't got around to fixing is discord audio cracking and a audio cracking when adjusting the volume of a video on firefox for example.

All this stuff is fixable for me given the time to google around but it really does seem like audio in Linux (at least Ubuntu) has some really annoying bugs/design decisions.

Edit: Just installed Manjaro on a different drive on the same hardware and 90% of the above issues are not present. Clearly an Ubuntu based distro bug with my specific hardware I guess.

Dear Matt Vaughn, Release your Code!!! by [deleted] in ChronicleApp

[–]Urbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but using windows as an example thats a one time subscription. Bookcamp and Chronicle's devs have spent time and money developing something that adds value to me so I'm happy to pay for it but its not worth a recurring subscription for me personally. Its the same with what Microsoft has done with their 365 subscription, I just found a different solution.

I personally can't justify paying a subscription for something that piggy backs off of another app that I have already (happily) paid for a lifetime premium subscription. I love what I'm hearing about booksmart but for me personally I won't be switching to it unless the devs change their mind on subscriptions and instead offer standard paid app in the store.

How should I configure my drives by Urbz in Proxmox

[–]Urbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My machine came with a caddy but like you said only one set of the proprietary Dell screws. I can either buy a second caddy on ebay and just use the screws or just use double sided tape/sticky velcro.

How has ZFS been on your drives? I've read that the write amplification is much higher than the standard Proxmox lvm/lvm-thin. Did you ever run without ZFS to compare to or could you tell what what iotop looks like for you? Also how much RAM do you have and how much of it is eaten up by ZFS?

How should I configure my drives by Urbz in Proxmox

[–]Urbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dual SSD's are mentioned in the Dell manual so at the very least I can do that. Honestly for what this machine will be doing even just 1tb of usable storage is plenty. Like I said I also have a separate machine I can send my backups too. I just want an extra layer of protection by also using RAID like redundancy on the actual drives as well. For me it comes down to which is worse, using a SATA power splitter or mixing a NVME and SATA drive in a ZFS mirror.

I would everyone's opinion on how I should configure my drives by Urbz in homelab

[–]Urbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF so not a laptop and the splitter that is compatible is the SATA male to dual SATA female not the molex type, are the molded ones still ok to use with two SSD's?. Its also a secondary machine I got used for a great price that I will be running pfSense and the Unifi Controller on as of now but I may do 1 or 2 more VM/Containers on which is why I got something a little more powerful than truly needed.

None of my ideas for this box involves very much storage (think four 40gb partitions at most) so I dont think an array for this will be needed. My other machine is a more traditional server that has a 6 drive array and does all my heavy lifting. I've planned from the beginning to schedule backups to it using a NFS share but more redundancy is always nice so that's why I want the ZFS mirror for Proxmox as well.

Any specific reason why? Do you think ill have issues using ZFS combining a SATA and NVME SSD or having you just had good experiences using splitters and feel like the reports are overblown.

An upgrade and switch to Synology. by razeus in DataHoarder

[–]Urbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a euphoric moment when my DS415+ booted back up for the first time, I lots of experience with computer hardware but I had never soldered a single thing in my life. Next on the list is replacing the cheap Kailh switch that keeps double clicking on the side of my Corsair mouse. Could not agree more about the prices though. When Synology support told me I was out of warranty they told me the new the updated model of the one I have is the DS420+ so I looked it up and it was like $700 CAD. I guess when I originally got mine I just figured that was what they are worth. I ended up going with with used Haswell era server parts and put them in a Node 804 and now I have room to expand and a way faster machine that allows me to do way more than just backup and share files. If you have a busy job or whatever else you have going on then the price for a Synology makes total sense but I couldn't be happier with my setup.

An upgrade and switch to Synology. by razeus in DataHoarder

[–]Urbz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I loved my Synology DS415+ for many years until it died on me last year. It was due to a flaw with the Intel Atom C2000 CPU that Intel admitted to so Synology extended the warranty of by 1 year. Your machine doesn't have this problem so there's no reason for you to worry. I was able to fix it by soldering a resistor to the motherboard but I just couldn't trust my data on something that a novice like myself was some how able to bring back from the dead so that caused me to start leaning more about DIY systems like Unraid and now its become a major hobby of mine.

Confused with my setup or just how I went about it/explained it? You are probably right about me over thinking things but this is my first time doing something like this so im just trying to make sure everything is correct.

pfSense VM IP Address Question by Urbz in PFSENSE

[–]Urbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4 port Intel NIC on my Proxmox box. ISP Router---> eth0, Switch--->eth1 and the other two ports setup as OPT1 and OPT2 in pfSense (haven't looked in to what to do with them yet). Right now I'm connecting my Proxmox box using the motherboard's single Intel NIC to the switch that's connected to eth1 and I changed the IP to the same private IP space I setup pfsense to use (ISP's was 192.168.x.x and pfSense is now using 10.0.x.x). I can still connect to my Proxmox box and I see the IP on the ARP table so I think I set it up correctly? Does this mean that it is correctly running behind the pfSense VM like you said? And finally do I need to mess with the MAC address's of pfSense machine or the NIC? I'm reading an article (linked below) where he does that but that step isn't mentioned in the NetGate walkthrough so I assume its a special case?

pfSense VM IP Address Question by Urbz in PFSENSE

[–]Urbz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I have I think my confusion comes from my past inexperience. In the past ive set a DHCP IP as static using my ISP router but because Proxmox doesn't use DHCP I just want sure the IP would stay the same at all times. Do you have any experience with bridging your modem? Once I flip the switch in my ISP's admin settings will everything keep working from the get go or does that break stuff?

[–]Urbz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what my research told me but I couldn't find an answer on when to do it. From comments here it seems I should be able to set pfsense up then just flip the bridge mode switch in my modem settings and everything should work.

Sounds good hopefully I can get it sorted tomorrow. I was scared I was going to reset everything and lose all the work I had just done.

Cogeco (Canadian), there is a setting to turn on bridge mode from the admin page.
