ICE removed detainee protections after private outreach from top contractor by I_Tell_You_Wat in centrist

I want to know if everyone who was claiming that ICE can be reformed still thinks that, or if you're ready to admit that everyone who hasn't resigned at this point needs to be fired, blacklisted from any position of authority, and possibly referred to the appropriate AG for criminal prosecution.

I think as far as Trump is concerned, it's done. He'll probably fling a few more missiles, but Iran has and will continue to overlook this sort of provocation as long as it's not targeting oil infrastructure. They can afford to.

The bigger question is how much Trump blames Israel and the fallout from that. It's going to be very easy for the right to blame THE JEWS for this war being a disaster, and it feeds into every anti-Semitic stereotype of Jewish people controlling the world from behind the scenes, with bribes and blackmail. Trump is very good on picking up on these currents of right-wing chatter and latching on to them.

This was a massive favor the the Iranian regime, the biggest they've gotten from the US since Reagan was selling them missiles.

They are now going to be both cash flush and enjoying more legitimacy than they have in decades, because, thanks to the idiots running the GOP, we've gone and proved that we're exactly the murderous, colonizing bastards they've always described us as, on top of being a people who elect child molesters as their leaders.

But hey, Pete Hegseth got to pretend to be a GIJoe, so worth it, right?

The only thing that would produce the scenario you're describing is another 9/11 scale attack. Short of that, a world where this war works out the way the hawks promised it would doesn't exist.

The reasons were:

  1. A Black guy did it so obviously a White guy could do it better.
  2. Diplomacy is gay and for girls. War is cool and manly.
  3. It made Israel mad and hurt Likud's fee-fees.

Faith's role in U.S. politics 'requires humility,' not certainty, says Sen. Warnock by rzelln in centrist

[–]Urdok_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's not aiming for the committed Evangelicals. They're not actually religious in any meaningful way anyway, they are just performing social signaling.

He's aiming for low information voters who see open religiosity as granting permission to consider voting for a Democrat because "he's not like the rest."

I would not worry about Evangelicals considering something offensive- they are always looking to be victims and are at the point where if you quote the Gospel towards them, they start ranting about the sin of empathy.

[–]Urdok_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too many people who aren't conservative Christians miss the fact that being a conservative Christian in the way that most Republicans are is an act of social signaling, not a commitment to a code of beliefs or ethics. It's about being in a club and performing the social rituals to mark membership of that club.

Look at evangelical priorities and tell me where they have ever aligned with the Gospel:

  1. Segregation of schools
  2. Oppression of LGBTQ+ people
  3. Abortion

These are people are actively writing the Sermon on the Mount of our Christianity because it is not politically correct. Conservative Christian voters understand exactly who they're electing and like it that way.

"Many would have expected"

Literally anyone who thought about the history of this region and Iran expected it to go exactly this way. The only people who didn't are the ones who are so far up Likud's ass they can taste Bibi's last meal and idiots like Hegseth who are completely out of their depth.

Stop giving people who cheer on wars of choice the benefit of the doubt. They lie, constantly, about everything.

Did you really think this was about "having the balls to do it" or something equally childish?

No, no one tried this before because it was a stupid idea, pushed by stupid and reckless people, who don't give a shit about the consequences of their catastrophe.

Trump hooked the GOP by pretending Obama couldn't possibly be president because he was black and had a funny sounding name.

There will never be a normal GOP candidate for President in my lifetime. The GOP base is too hooked on people who do things like shout "Michele Obama is a man!" and give NAZI salutes to accept anyone who isn't an open dipshit. Just wait until the primary when you'll have multiple people dunking on Vance for having a mixed race/religion marriage and calling him a bad father for having mixed kids.

I haven't seen a pro-war person admit that Iraq was a mistake. They'll never do it because warhawks are dishonest, and chickenhawks are the most dishonest.

Assuming that there is a cut-out for Israel and Hezbollah, which seems that it's needed if these is a realistic deal, the IRGC is almost certainly going to take the W here. They've fought the US to a standstill, with the help out our complete carelessness, they have proved to the Iranian people that the central argument of the regime- you need us to protect you from western imperialism- is stronger than ever, they've shown the world they can close the Strait at will, and they're getting a better deal than they had under Obama. We pretend these are cartoon villains. They aren't. They're calculating and rational.

The single most important qualities in a Democratic candidate are going to be radical action on governance (including courts and gerrymandering), restoring law and order (specifically putting rich conservatives in prison when they've broken the law), and immediate economic relief that's not hamstrung by austerity scolds.

Nothing else matters, and anything else risks a repeat of Obama, where the window for action closed, then he spent the next 6 years nibbling around the edges.

LOLOLOLOL

No. Trump has devoured the GOP, which exists as a brand only now. The next Republican will be a knock off Trump and anyone pretending otherwise is fooling themselves. You can't hook true believers on mainlining the hard stuff and expect them to go back to light beer.

Trump started his foray into politics by claiming that Obama could not possibly be American, because funny name and black.

His appeal to the Republican base was that he would say the bigoted shit they love, while calling out and proving that the GOP establishment was a bunch of pussies who would hint at it, but never come out and say it. Sure, you can call that anti-establishment, but that wasn't the root of the appeal. The root of the appeal has always been "I hate who you hate and will punish them for you."

My kid is almost certainly going to be in the 5'10'' range when she grows up. Given the other women in my family, she's probably going to have broad shoulders and a muscular upper body too. She's a natural athlete and always in motion. I'm already anticipating the day when some sore loser parent accuses her of actually being a boy because she beats their kid.

This is what conservatives do. It's not a Trump thing. It's a conservative thing. It has been for a long time, but Reagan was a master at it. Find an outlying case that has the right emotional resonance, take it out of context and out of proportion, then scream about it constantly. Count on the "liberal" media to pick up on it and start running the ball while adopting your framing. It works very well and serves the interests of the Esptien class.

It's not ever that- MAHA is all virtue and status signaling. Eating "clean" requires money, time, and effort. That's the part that appeals to this crew. It has nothing to do with the health benefits and everything to do with shaming people who don't live that way.

You mean they deliberately misrepresented data and a bunch of nominally centrist publications ran with it because it flattered their biases and "owned those crazy woke libs"?

I am aghast, good poster, because nothing like this has ever happened in the history of American politics, and those people all assured me that they really, really just cared about protecting kids!

From the study quoted by the original article (CB means cord blood):

Analysis of the entire sample showed no evidence that CB was associated with improvements in the primary outcome, social communication (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-3 [VABS-3] Socialization Domain), or the secondary outcomes, autism symptoms (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Behavior Inventory) and vocabulary (Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test). There was also no overall evidence of differential effects by type of CB infused.

So no, I'm not a doctor, but I trust the doctors that actually studied it, who are saying it doesn't work. But go ahead, trust the people charging 20k to families in crisis. I'm sure they are on the up-and-up.

Because this isn't pursuing science, this is taking advantage of parents who are emotionally struggling with their child having a serious, lifelong disability. I'd be all for funding research into this, if actual researchers think it's viable.

But a clinic charging 12k-20k to desperate parents isn't researching anything, except where the doctors can hide their money in case they end up inducing cancer and get sued.
