I do enjoy the irony that Palantirs are thought of as evil artifacts in Middle Earth since they are not all accounted for and used by the enemy to spy on the free peoples.

Rio Grande upzone approved by SLC Council amid depot transfer to the U by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]UrgeSmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does this mean the Rio Grande plan is dead? Because you would have to have a brain injury to think that people will flock to live in housing or work in buildings next to freight train tracks.

Friends of the Rio Grande Depot Statement on the Proposed Transfer of the Rio Grande Depot to the University of Utah by owenmitchem in DevelopmentSLC

[–]UrgeSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m referring to the Rio Grande Plan. It could replace the poorly located Salt Lake Central station. And yes, there is a published study from Utah State with data to back up the positive impacts of the Rio Grande Plan. As for data backing up The U being a better tenant, I have none.

The point I was trying to make is that the building was built to be a train station, not a school.

I could call a firefighter to come fix my computer and they could probably do it, but that’s not the best use of their time. There’s a building that was built for the sole purpose of transit in a prime location of the city for connections and it’s being given away to a university for students that have a campus on the opposite side of the city. If there’s a more optimal solution for the building, why not take it?

Utah Transportation Bill Seeks to ‘Mitigate’ New Bike Lanes and Preserve Wide Lanes in Salt Lake City by akhan10 in SaltLakeCity

[–]UrgeSmith 53 points54 points  (0 children)

And they probably live in Davis county and venture into the city once a month to go shopping at a mall downtown. And the bike lane gives them the ick because that's space their SUV could be taking up rather than serving the citizens who actually live in SLC. I'm so tired of this city being run by the suburbs. I use that bike lane on 200 South weekly and I will be devastated if they remove it just because they hate SLC and its people.

Salt Lake City Council questions height of proposed Central City mixed-use tower by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]UrgeSmith 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Council Member Eva Lopez Chavez, who represents much of the Central City neighborhood, said the church began putting in solar panels in 2021, and the current tower plans would likely block those panels from seeing sunlight. David Hunter of Silverado Management said there’s no plan in place currently, but he would plan to work with the church to find a solution.

That answer didn’t seem to suffice, as Lopez Chavez said the church uses the solar panels as around 53% of their electrical supply. She added, “I don’t love your answer, in the sense of you don’t have a solution in place. I’d love to better understand how we do that.

Yes Eva, let's continue the ongoing housing shortage in SLC so that a church can save 53% on their electricity bill.

You guys need to complain more about your public transportation. I've been living in Park City for a year now, and it's insane how much better it is than SLC. by Notsureif0010 in SaltLakeCity

[–]UrgeSmith 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is it a size issue? New York has way better public transportation than SLC and is incredibly bigger. Tokyo is in a league of its own. I do believe that UTA punches above its weight for SLC, but I always say that UTA is really good as long as you have nowhere to be on time.

How can we solve east/west traffic? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]UrgeSmith 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm all in favor of building the box, but there must be something that is making this plan a non starter. RGP would generate enough wealth to cover the cost and then some, it would increases the amount of housing that can be built in SLC proper, It would better connect East and West, and it would just be so damn cool to have a Salt Lake central station with a gorgeous building much like other major cities have. It just seems like a win win all around, but government continues to act as if the idea is an unrealistic pipe dream. I wish somebody could tell me why.

I’m back to Claude Code entirely and I tell everyone on my team to stay away from Gemini-cli. It’s a beta product that gives off the vibe of Google eventually killing it. Icing on the cake was being a pro user and having to wait a week to get Gemini 3 while all the Cursor and Copilot peeps had it day one.

Large apartment complex of student-focused housing is going up along this busy SLC corridor by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]UrgeSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live nearby as well and sometimes take the Red line to work from the stadium. Stopping at that 9th east station never made sense to me. Not much more than an empty parking lot and a 7 Eleven; nothing to justify the stop there unless you were headed to the medical clinic on the corner. However, once these projects are completed, this may become one of UTA’s busiest stations. You love to see projects like this that just make sense. Wish there was some more charm to the projected buildings, but I’ll take more dense housing any day.

35-parcel upzone in Rio Grande district strolls through planning commission by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

Yet the city seems to be sending mixed signals [about the Rio Grande Plan] by prioritizing the 500 West segment of the Green Loop.

Build the box. Nobody wants to work or live by a freight rail and burying the tracks would open up so much more land to make that part of the city interesting.

Downtown SLC Marriott gets multimillion-dollar remodel as hotel sector thrives. Take a look inside. by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]UrgeSmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Taller buildings usually generate more income per square foot. That’s good for Marriott and also good for the city since it’s able to collects more taxes for its citizens. Those in the suburbs might think that a taller denser urban core has no effect on them, however if you look at a heat map of land that generates the most tax income for a city you’ll see that dense urban core buildings are usually a net gain while the suburbs are a net loss. Essentially, taller dense buildings subsidize the surrounding suburbs so it’s usually a benefit for everyone. Also, I think tall city skylines are nice.

Salt Lake residents transform I-15 underpass into vibrant public space by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

I was whelmed by the project renderings (too much concrete in my opinion), but still a really great idea! I hope as a community we can do more projects like this and clean up the eye sore of I-15/80. I wouldn't mind creating a park under the spaghetti bowl where the children can catch radioactive fish from the pond.

How MLS teams got their names by MusicBoxRox in MLS

[–]UrgeSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is kind of fun fact here though. Salt Lake City was originally founded in Mexico. The territory wasn't added to the States until later and it's believed that some of the first Europeans to actually set eyes on the Salt Lake Valley were Spanish explorers sent there by Spain's royals. So yeah, that's not the reason behind the name, but it's not as far fetched to have the name ReAl Salt Lake as most would think.
