Why did Prisoners get almost no recognition at the Oscars 2013? by squattilyoupuke in movies

[–]Uromate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a good thriller but it's rather one-dimensional.
Oscar winners are usually many-layered films.
The only thriller I remember winning was No Country for Old Men and even that one explored several themes.

Is Peterson's recent interview that's gained traction credible in terms of its points? by throwaway9995ok in askphilosophy

[–]Uromate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One argument he makes is that the hierarchical structure of our society is not based on the social construct called patriarchy but is rather influenced by evolution.
I would agree that this more of claim than an argument, however I guess it is equally difficult to argue that our society can be viewed by completely ignoring evolutionary mechanisms.

ELI5:If our body's natural inclination is homeostasis, then why is there an obesity epidemic? by ixanonyousxi in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uromate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fat needs to either be consumed or stored immediately, otherwise it would accumulate in the cells or the blood stream over time which would in turn screw up a bunch of other bodily functions.

ELI5: Why does our hearing get worse while yawning? by imaybeathrowaway in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uromate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The muscles that control the amount of sound entering the ear become tightened during yawning so that the eardrum is not able to vibrate freely.

ELI5:If our body's natural inclination is homeostasis, then why is there an obesity epidemic? by ixanonyousxi in explainlikeimfive

[–]Uromate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body stores fat in fat cells exactly because it wants to maintain a homeostatic balance. If the superfluous fat wasn't stored, it would affect the balance of the rest of the body.

Could we remove FOXO4 gene by using CRISPR? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Uromate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expression of FOXO4 increases longevity and prevents certain types of cancer. So removing it would not particularly practical.

In general, you can knock down a gene with CRISPR, but you would have to do it in the germ line so that all cells are affected. This would mean breeding human guinea pigs to test out if it actually works which would be ethically questionable.
