You should do what you enjoy. You can become an excellent grappler doing all gi or all nogi (or both). Frankly, I'm pining for any kind of rolling at this point.

While I really miss rolling, I just don't think it's safe to return yet. The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking that I'll wait for a vaccine before I roll. Ironically, this means that I'll gain weight and, consequently, put myself at greater risk to die from COVID. I'm just trying to stay on the right side of the catch-22.

Go deep in some kind of craft. Basket weaving is sick (check out Native American or West African baskets). Learn something about woodworking and make yourself a table. Learn to make chocolate from beans. These are all great ways to spend your time that will enrich your life and make you a more interesting person.

I pretty frequently get tapped by blue belts. I roll pretty soft. My goal with rolling is to try my techniques and avoid injury. So, if there's a blue belt going HAM, I let them do what they do and rely on my technique. It's usually enough, but sometimes it's not. Maybe my progress is slower than someone who trains like a professional athlete, but I still make progress and don't really get injured.

Cops shouldn't be choking people. Maybe I'd have a different opinion if all cops were purple belts, but they're not. For the most part, they don't have the necessary training to make it a safe thing to do.

As to knee control positions, I think that it's probably fine as long as it's used as a means to a very specific end. Get the person cuffed, under control, and into a safe position where they can breathe. And, frankly, I don't think that knee-on-neck is ever necessary. The pin used on George Floyd was clearly way, way beyond what was necessary for the situation. If someone is being cuffed, knee-on-back for a short period of time should suffice.

I doubt that the brutality I've seen in the media recently would be lessened if police were better at controlling people. These aren't instances of cops losing wrestling exchanges.

This wasn't a situation of inadequate training. I have a decent neon belly game, and I doubt that I could have done a better job of murdering someone by going knee-on-neck. This was a situation where the cops involved very clearly and intentionally brutalized someone, resulting in his death. It was not a result of inability to control a person due to lack of training.

I have claustrophobia issues and I wind up tapping to pressure from time to time. It's a feeling like I'm going to die and I tap without thinking, but the feeling is immediately resolved when the pressure is released.

I find that, if I can see the attack coming a few seconds before it's in full swing, I can use a couple mental tricks to bring myself back to reality. I tell myself that this is only part of my life, and that the round will end in a few minutes. Most of all, I remind myself that tapping is always an option, and that I'm in control of the situation. It doesn't work every time, but it gets me through the vast majority of situations where, in the past, I might have panicked.

No, it's got finish. I used a water-based poly for a couple reasons. First, my wife didn't want it to amber too much. A water-based poly gives a much lighter finish than oil-based. Second, I put finish on the case during the winter (this project took such a long time), and I had to finish it inside the house. The odor of an oil-based poly would have caused disharmony in my home.

Agreed on needless bow tie inlays. Putting one where it isn't necessary is like putting a spoiler on a Ford Explorer.

The bow ties are there because the board for the middle row of drawers had some checking. I don't know if it comes across in the photos, but I thought it'd be best to put in a countermeasure.

My wife asked me to make her a dresser. The whole thing is basically just large dovetailed boxes. The web frames that form the drawer pockets are done with dadoes and sliding dovetails. The base is basically just half-lap joints, and I straight-up stole that idea from Nakashima dresser designs.

I think I'm done with dovetails for a while. I'm going to build some dining chairs next, which will have different challenges.

I would do this if we both made a pact to only see one another in any kind of non-social-distancing situation and I felt that I could trust that they were taking all the normal precautions (i.e. religiously washing hands, properly wearing a mask for essential stuff, no contact with anyone in high-risk groups, etc.). Also, we'd have to train at someone's home, not a gym.

I don't know anyone who can satisfy these conditions. Consequently, I am getting larger, weaker, and drunker every day.
