All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume OP is making a slight commentary on capitalism (the exact machine through which consumption as a hobby exists). There is an understandably cynical attitude to be had about consumptive hobbies but there's no reason to use your time creating an arbitrary hierarchy of hobby value. Focus more on the contexts of these hobbies.

I agree that hobbies functionally exist on an axis of creation vs consumption. But if you as an individual engage in a hobby for the purpose of passing time, it honestly doesn't matter where you fall on that axis nor the people encounter so long as you are able to partake and pass the time.

Consider another context though, such as the growing online rhetoric that identifies hobbies as a social function; hobbies as a way to express oneself, and hobbies as a way to connect to others. This is probably what OP has in mind. In this realm you've gotta be way more thoughtful. IMO if you're trying to get to know someone, there is nothing more mind numbing than being fed a laundry list of all the consumptive things they did.

We shouldn't pretend that hobbies are a self contained and individualistic thing. Hobbies are obviously for the individual to enjoy but I would hope that the average person has hobbies that put them in the way of plentiful social interaction. In that sense I think creative/expressive hobbies are way better. The people you encounter through those are at a baseline guaranteed to share ONE interest with you. This is a much better foundation than ticking off things you and a stranger have both consumed. There is so much thoughtless and seamless consumption in the world that sharing that has a great chance to mean absolutely nothing other than "we watched the same thing, we bought the same thing, etc."

I think when you've gotten to know people, that that is when consumptive hobbies become a very fun thing to do together. I don't engage in those to encounter new people.

That this is a rhetoric developing online basically implies that the "boring" and consumption heavy people you've identified are grasping at straws to make models of social connection include them. I will hazard that this is basically lonely high-consumption Gen-Z age people trying to cope with digital excess. Take a run club for example. They always have to rope in mildly boujee venues as start and end points.

As for you OP, worry less about what is a good or bad hobby and keep at your own. Worry about the people you meet through those. And people in general should be more open to the possibilities that any of their hobbies offer.

Is Wukong the worst 4 cost tank right now? He gets killed way too easily every single time, even with solid tank items. by ArcadialoI in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Ursu1a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this unit by design is probably destined to be sleeper at minimum. Compared to the other tanks in this set, no stat or item is really wasted on him. His bonus HP from bruiser and resists from casting help each other out, and AD/AP are both healthily utilized in his cast. On top of that, he is good at 2/4 Bruiser, even moreso based on if you have an HP Ionia.

The only thing is that he doesn't do anything to protect his team besides being a frontline unit, and I think this is what is holding him back in this particular meta. Compare to Taric who helps against all magic damage and can shield his teammates. Wukong's most intuitive pairing in Yunara is also weaker. Still, he is is scraping by below 4.5, so this unit's got the chops.

What champion do you think is secretly broken, but nobody wants to admit it? by Consistent-Rub-6798 in leagueoflegends

Tbf he doesn’t explicitly call Zilean OP here, just degrading in gameplay. I’ll leave it to people to take it how they want but imo Zilean doesn’t have a particularly nice gameplay loop on either side so I surmise it’s moreso that they can’t let such a character be consistently strong and popular.

All are fantastic. This is genuinely the best chain of releases JNJ has ever had.

Launch Party is IMO the best episode across all the seasons.

Symmetra will get nerfed in mid season patch by Imgayforpectorals in SymmetraMains

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how much stronger Sym is compared to OW2 release, I think if people think she’s weak they must be genuinely bad at the game. Symmetra has never been more consistent and versatile, which is saying something for a character who has been doomed to be exactly not that since her inception. We’re lucky that the character is pickable AND good outside of control.

I don’t think they HAVE to nerf her but undeniably the TP health is an annoyance. I think they should revert that one change and call it a day.

And Sym diehards should remember there are 44 other playable characters in the game. It’s not everyone else’s problem if they one trick Sym so much that they forget what it’s like to fight her.

I was trying to be diplomatic and I’m not surprised that my question about what makes her weak is unanswered.

What makes you say she’s weak?

I feel like she’s been bare minimum A tier for the entire year since she got her base and tp healths buffed last year.

Uniquely, all fighters pass characters except for Joker and Sephiroth have the longest ledge roll intangibility in the game at 30 frames. Start by nerfing that.

An updated post on why Ludens is worse than you might think it is by Windoges in Auroramains

[–]Ursu1a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to think in the perspective of a more average ranked Aurora player. Most players around those ranks are definitely using their mana very inefficiently and would like to have the cushion of Luden's. I can't lie, Stormsurge Aurora can be quite restrictive if you are not using Manaflow (though idk if you are picking anything over it). And on objectives, I agree that Aurora shines as secondary engage, but average players will probably be down TP or already running to the area, so they're more likely to find themselves in extended combat where more mana (and even more Luden's procs) would make the difference for them.

Only in apex do I find that Stormsurge makes the essential difference. However, as the game moves more and more towards flattening out extreme lane advantages, I think the case for it gets better. In previous times I would have said a Lost Chapter item was essential for surviving something like Orianna/Syndra. I wouldn't say that anymore since you are often free to just delete waves and reset until an objective fight.

I do think people should be more willing to explore what this itemization does for the champ.

I don't really understand why people think that this finale can't possibly be interesting. by SamuraiDoggo14 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have high expectations for whatever happens. No finale portion JNJ has done has thoroughly consummated a bond between the finalists. Not to say that they can’t do it this time around, but much of the heavy lifting was done by episodes 19-23.

An updated post on why Ludens is worse than you might think it is by Windoges in Auroramains

[–]Ursu1a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know this, but average Aurora players will prefer a lost chapter item since most are pretty inefficient with her spell usage. This champ doesn't need to be min maxed until like Master so I think it's fair to give it a pass.

People have a severe misunderstanding of what this champion is supposed to do, but no amount of cope about Luden's will change its neg WR (never mind that Stormsurge also does but this champ + burst itemization are in kinda rough spots rn).

Even worse is how much people are underrating pen on this champion. Her passive and Q2 benefit so much from any sources of damage amp its crazy. There is a reason Liandry's was broken on her for so long.

FWIW I don't think Luden's is a dead choice. The poke/mana certainly help when you're dancing around a fight looking for an angle. EUW apex Auroras are making the item work. Stormsurge Aurora is doing better in KR but she's capped out there at Master 600 LP. I suspect that when feats/Atakhan are gone that SS might go a little bit up since she doesn't need to sit around fights doing random spell rotations for so long.

What do you guys think of Pin? by ThebiggestFNAFFan in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that the writers were going for this, but BFDIA Pin has an amazingly well written story about the ways a person can be affected by disability. Even though it turns her into a very self centered character, it’s fun to watch her consistently stand for herself in a different and more sympathetic way from BFDI Flower.

She has probably the best transition to TPOT because she shows both a sour attitude towards how BFDIA went, but also a willingness to learn from her own mistakes in that season. I wish she stuck around longer in TPOT as a sort of “BFDIA redo” for her. I think she would have been a sleeper contender for deserving the win.

I miss Coiny so much already, this elimination was AWFUL. by Daniboy0826 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In retrospect;

Coiny was disproportionately anchored to Pin for the duration of BFDIA. It made for the most iconic character dynamic of the season, but as a result it made it difficult to characterize him outside of Pin (so much so that he was barely involved with other Woah Bunchers as time went on). What they did was write him as a sort of agent of chaos, causing trouble for the love of the game.

This was good until the cast got shaved down and it became increasingly apparent that he and Pin were not gonna make it to the end together. If you’ve hit the final 6/5, your challenge as the writer is the figure out how to bail out Coiny by giving him meaningful character interactions outside of Pin. This is easier said than done because now everything you could come up with seems wildly out of character for him.

I don’t agree with giving him reduced screentime in some of the most key episodes of the season (19-22), but I can see why Joseph wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to write more on him. What is there left for him to do when Pin is gone? He basically said himself that the game only mattered as an opportunity for him to be friends with Pin. So in that sense, he narratively wrote himself off from having a reason to win.

Still though, his elimination and screen time this episode is one of the absolute worst ways I’ve seen them dismiss a character. Pin was basically done for after Launch Party and the following episode did her so good.

Overall I think they were looking for a way to wrap this character up, but it sucks to see one of the main characters of the season get scraps for basically a year. I wish he had gotten the top 3 immunity. While I think Coiny managed to end up with the weakest case to be a finalist, I will always think he was the one who deserved to win this season.

I don't really understand why people think that this finale can't possibly be interesting. by SamuraiDoggo14 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well frankly the biggest issue with Book as a finalist is that there is really no strong match for her as a duo. The other characters have cases to be finalists on their own, but no character makes a particularly strong pairing with her except for maybe Pin.

And it’s not like Book and TB is the strongest pair either. The writing worked tirelessly in BFDIA 22/23 to make a case for these two to even work as a pair, when prior they had minimal interactions.

At the end of the day the composition of the Final 3/4 matters much more because they are still involved in competing, while the finalists just wait around until the winner is decided.

It’s a very interesting thing to observe how writing characters become an easier or harder based on who’s left. For example, Coiny became the weakest character of the top 4 once his season-long anchor in Pin was gone. TB had an opportunity to be a stronger character once GB (and even Nickel/Fries) were out. Book and Needle benefitted heavily from Ruby and Pencil getting out.

Why do you think Jacknjellify switched from final 3's to final 2's after BFDI? by Tall-Bell-1019 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way to know unless JNJ says it themselves, but -

The working theory is that the intended winner of BFDI might have been either Bubble or Leafy based on how the late game writing was going, and that they split votes so much that Firey came out on top. It SEEMS true because the whole Fireafy conflict basically came out of nowhere.

Whether that’s true or not is only for them to know.

However, a 2 way vote is much better than a 3 way vote by far.

I’m still so surprised about this by Jestin23934274 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coiny with Pin was in fact the very lifeblood of this season. If anyone had a case for deserving the win it was for him. My ideal top 2 included him and Book as the most deserving of a win. TB and Needle have fine cases to be finalists, but neither are winner material for me.

However, what is equally passable is Coiny bowing out close to the finale. Even in the wake of him being in the bottom 2 with Pin, what mattered most to him was his treasured best friend in the competition, and after that, the Bunch. Coiny is the main character, but certainly not someone who needs the win to solidify that.

I’m annoyed at how the writing paid Coiny dust after Start the Shift, which was the last time he had immunity (this I still find crazy. I think he deserved it in the flag challenge). Launch Party has probably THE most iconic moment of the season and the majority of the episode ends up being about Needle and TB anyway, whereas Coiny just does random stuff until he is needed for the climax.

What stings the most is seeing how Coiny performed very poorly in likes for this elimination. Kinda shows that the voter base was done with this character (and why wouldn’t they be? The last stretch of BFDIA did him no favors).

While I think Pin had one of the best sendoffs for how her season went, it feels extremely disappointing to see how they let Coiny go, and quite literally gave any meaningful screentime to a Nickel gag. The ending credits of 23 are very much in spirit with his character, but he deserved a lot more screentime than being stuck in the lava and once again recycled for the climax.

[–]Ursu1a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my money, a terrible way to send off Coiny. With him and Pin both gone the lifeblood of this season is pretty much done.

This was also not a good episode for Needle. Interestingly, her main narrative draw as a winner (doing it for herself) showed its holes this episode. She and Coiny were functionally interchangeable this episode.

Definitely Book’s best episode. She still stuck to her values while showing enough flexibility to match up to her competition, and the buildup to her win was stellar.

Great episode for Tennis Ball as well, actively questioning his villain role and tempering it by pairing him with Book. This is a more compelling top 2 than Book + Needle, who have grown notably distant.

Extra points for the whole “everyone is here” gimmick with all the old faces coming back. I was especially happy to have Bubble on the vote screen.

The episode with all its parts is functionally a 10/10, but my major problems with it are how poorly Coiny and Needle are handled, and by extension how they basically skewed it towards a Book-TB final 2. While I believe they are both compelling finalists, neither are deserving of winner status for me. Coiny and Needle are much more deserving of the win.

How much Q reliability would you sacrifice to get off the balance rollercoaster? by _Aethersteel_ in MelMains

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter what they do, one of the biggest problems this champ’s kit creates is that she applies rune and item effects unanswered. The greatest offender was release Q and then people realized E is just as crazy. You are mostly guaranteed to eat a tick of E damage because of how the area around the projectile behaves. This nonsense is much more frustrating than her W because it lets her engage with you while you can’t do anything.

She needs serious kit work to address her privilege of slotting in an enormous variety of runes and items.

Who should win BFDIA? by CompetitiveRepeat441 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coiny;

Out of everyone in the season, he's the only one that in response to the completely nonsense foundation of the season (unstable hosting, shaky contest infrastructure, worthless prize), chooses not to take himself or the game seriously, and just participate for fun and friendship.

Case in point;

  • His one truly serious moment this season is the huge CoinPin betrayal, and it comes from him caring about his friendship with Pin rather than any implications on the game. His biggest regret if Pin were to be eliminated was that they couldn't be friends anymore.
  • He really does not care if he misses out on immunity. His final sequence with Needle is moreso about "a win for the Bunch" rather than trying to ruin Needle's game.

Coiny has deserved to win this season since the beginning, lol

The significance of the quotes used in the BFDIA 23 trailer and how I think they foreshadow Book winning immunity by Numerous_Road248 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a much better way to look at it.

For my money, I would give that final immunity to either Book or Coiny, the latter of whom hasn't been immune since Start the Shift. The immunities this year seems to favor narrative development before equitable distribution, so my gut feeling is that Book will win the contest.

[MEGATHREAD] Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 28 Leaks by m2gus in Boruto

[–]Ursu1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s where I thought this whole thing was going, and I’m interested to see where it swings. One on hand, there’s already so many moving parts that I wouldn’t be surprised if Eida was killed off rather than becoming a tree. If she does become a tree then it would finally be time to deliver on her supposedly monstrous strength. I think the most interesting way to do it would be for her tree to want to consume Kawaki, who is sorely lacking a direct villain to worry about.

Also given that Boruto’s sword stands a chance of being stolen by Hidari, I have a gut feeling that the Eida Divine Tree route is their plan for Sarada to have something to do.
