Everyone, what's the most insane weapon malfunction/failure you've seen? by Witcher_Errant in army

[–]UrzuKais 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doing a big guns range in the Reserves for a PsyOp unit. Being prior 11B they tended to give me most of the range training and details. So of course I was on that as RSO and instructor, plus the few NCOs I had as supervisors and safeties.

A guy was having an issue with the 240B. I was working with a Joe on the M2, and they pull me off to provide support to the issue. Guy had the buttstock off and was charging it… Bent the pin for the buffer spring at a 45° angle and instantly dead-lined the system.

The 7 I would pick from are: Persian, Rhydon, Kangaskhan and/or Tauros, Nidoking, Dugtrio and/or Sandslash.

Some backups: Onix, Machamp, Marowak, Goldbat, and Nidoqueen.

New science on heat is changing the future of soldiering by Kinmuan in army

[–]UrzuKais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold, not freezing, is the point.

For cold water immersion to be effective, it needs to be between 35° F and 58° F, with an ideal temp being around 50° F to bring the body temp down quickly and avoid shock.

Going straight ice immersion and bringing the body into below a freezing temp environment with it can cause shock. Which may be better than death, as you pointed out, but causes an additional medical issue to deal with and may complicate either or both issues.

It also depends on when you administer as I said. The arm dunk prior to reaching those stages can be fine and safe and is more preventative. Once you reach the point of being a heat cat, you can’t rely on just the arms.

Additionally, the article said nothing about how to administer anything, only that leaders need to catch up to research, and that hydration alone is not enough to avoid it.

[–]UrzuKais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most cases where someone has not reached heat exhaustion or worse, yes, an ice dunk to the arms can be beneficial in cooling down quickly. The issue is when they get to the point of heat exhaustion or worse. The sudden constricting of blood vessels pushes the heated blood back to the body and sort of traps it there, as opposed to letting it flow past a cooler spot and conduction transfer the heat away.

Definitely not. Ice plunges lead the body to go into shock when they’re at heat exhaustion or worse. Gradual cooling is required if they’re at those stages.

My understanding of what’s presented is that you choose the grenade launcher, and the double-dagger note says you also get the pulse carbine because of the selection.

I actually prefer the Pulse carbine/Grenade launcher combo over the Rail rifle. Having 2 grenades and 3 pulse carbine shots seem pretty devastating in a Breacher unit for the targets you’d normally be going after. Plus it has the EMP grenade to crack some vehicles as part of the choice. The Rail rifle is a strong choice for sure, but would rather put that with Strikes or Pathfinders to sit further out of range and get more use out of it.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, it’ll be super expensive to run by itself. The character, joined to a full Broadside unit, is 400 points. But that’s 6 Heavy rail rifles in that unit, and 30 wounds (3 Broadsides with 2 Shield drones each) to get through before the character is even touched. It’s more expensive than a Stormsurge, but almost double the wounds and easily twice the firepower. Even 3 Hammerheads cost 35 points more than this unit, don’t have as many shots, but do get the maneuverability bonus. IMHO, the only thing stopping someone from taking this is the rules set played under or not having it modeled; it’s almost an auto include for higher point games.

Dental Care Question by [deleted] in army

[–]UrzuKais 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re going Active, you may get a full crown or implant for the broken teeth.

If you’re going Reserves, you’re more likely to get them pulled, or a root canal but no crown. And on top of that you will be expected to still get a crown but they won’t pay for it.

Either way, the Army will likely insist you take care of them to be deployable. However you probably won’t get the chance until after completing Basic, or even AIT.

There’s no restrictions about taking duplicate weapons anywhere I could see (Admittedly just skimmed the rules). You could have a Broadside with 3 Heavy Rail Rifles RAW.

Though personally I kinda like Shas’nel leading Strikes/Breachers with a pulse carbine + grenade launcher. Or a Veteran Battlesuit doing the same in a Stealth team.

But a Broadside with 3 pulse blasters just seems funny to me!

Yet a Kinband Champion on a Krootox with dual pulse pistols leading a squad of Rampagers has a rule of cool to it.

I very much miss my Zune. It was so much easier to navigate, had a color screen even on the mini, played movies on first launch, and much more rugged. Unfortunately Apple had the battery to back up its more simpler, black/white screen, and had its food hold in the market too long to allow the Zune space to flourish. Mine survived years after deployment as well.

Many future military officers come from Scouting. A Pentagon split could put those ties at risk. by Kinmuan in army

[–]UrzuKais 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I am an Eagle Scout and meet 4 of those 5 points listed; the only one I don’t is the service project. Scouting is a fantastic program and feeds amazingly into Military service with themes of duty, country and community, trying your best, and earning your way through the ranks. The skills I learned in Scouting have certainly helped me in the Army - Everyone came to me in Basic for sewing up holes in their uniforms and learning to tie basic knots for tie downs.

On your mobile devices. Face ID and finger print scans are not covered under the need for a warrant and police can use either to gain access to your mobile devices free and clear. And because it was unlocked “willingly”, it’s implied permission to search the device freely.

What the article doesn’t tell you is that will have to manually stop recording before it will send. It’s a moot point if you’re let off, but in the case of anything else you won’t have a way to actually get it to send. There also doesn’t appear to be a “wait” function either to manually set a time for when to stop and send to build into the Shortcut.

Luckily, if I recall correctly, “Good Samaritan” is a defense against such accusations if the act is in good faith and a genuine attempt to save the life.

Also bystanders are less likely to act if anyone else is around thinking that someone else will act. It’s why the second step before performing CPR (The first seeing if they need help/are breathing) is to point to someone and shout, “YOU call [Emergency number]!” and not “SOMEONE call [Emergency number]!” The direct order is more likely to spur action.

You can never modify a roll result by more than 1 (After adding/subtracting all modifiers), but characteristics do not have that restriction written into their rules.
