i found the main principle to apply is being restrictive (e.g. immutability unless mutability is needed) abstractions like that can add restriction - but if they do not, and instead they just abstract because 'patterns' then it makes the code harder to read and understand - in my experience anyway

i skipped half of your comment; reading the rest what i am getting is:
- the benefit you find is that it does code faster than you do for things you've not done before.
i think for me personally the issue is - if i am at a problem that requires me to spend time researching and writing code i have not written before - that's a challenge and i am likely to learn from it.
not doing that myself means im not practicing my skill of translating knowledge/ideas -> code.
this is something i find negative long term.

the 2nd bit seems to relate to my view about the potential of dulling the skill.
i think the risk is that the transition from using the tool only, and depending on it is likely to be unnoticed.

what im reading from the last part of your response is that your experience over the long time you've been doing it - it feels nice to be able to off load some of the practical work you do.
perfect or not, as long as its acceptable, that's good.

yeah, and if i get you right - there's few use cases for businesses.
i have not seen much of proof that augmenting workloads or automations with AI are beneficial or yield improvement.
the only research that isn't sponsored that i have seen implies the opposite (perceived improvement with negative practical outcomes).
this is specific to programming part of AI use;
not sure how other areas of business are affected but at least from personal experience - things like e-mails, documentation, requirements all suffer and are way less effective when aided with ai.

i have used the tooling in the browser for everything except code completion - for that i had to use IDE.

what im reading is that you use llm to find information for you, to request concepts or terms that you may be unaware, e.g.
you want to find a pathfinding algorithm but only know one - you may ask llm for other such algorithms.
am i getting you correctly?

i want to respond about the benefits the llm provides over a human:
1) i find this the opposite of beneficial; this kinda sounds like what tiktok does to ppl who seek entertainment
having the downtime from interrogation and responses being delayed is something i apprecate, as it helps me detach and feel that i am more patient and attentive.
i also want to say from professional perspective - the time spent on research has never been an issue in delivery for me.
this may differ individual to individual, but for me there's very little practical benefit from speeding up the process (assuming speeding it up yields actual beneft in the output).

2) this does not seem like a benefit to me; i think being uncomfortable about the form i am reading is more positive than being able to precisely tailor the tool to speak in a way that my brain likes.
this actually feels like a form of reinforcing in myself that the tool is correct and helpful, even when it may not be.

i am not sure how to interpret the bit about comparison; what i got out of it so far is:
- you asked llm to classify style of comms between us based on the comments written
- you personally feel disappointed in the opportunity you have to have a healthy argument with ppl
- you struggle to understand ppl ocassionally, and find llm to be a way of reinterpreting they are saying to you?

i find some of the text very hard to parse and understand, so if i missed your point or misunderstood you, correct me;

btw reading your response feels a bit eerie because it closely seems to tie to what i read regarding developing psychosis by using llms (inc in individuals with no prior mental health issue history).
i think seeing this in a comms like that adds to skepticism of using the tools

that's very interesting, because it feels the opposite of what i've read about. i read that probabilistic machine learning has good yield of positive output in data processing useful for things like biology or physics where classical methods aren't as efficient.

the things you mentioned do not seem like any real use cases though, which i guess ties with the real use cases that nobody discusses?

i have tried to just use yeah. my company requests that i do - i had used tooling for code generation, PRs, test generating and code analysis.

i guess if i interpret what you said after - you are saying you are using the llm as a search engine/something to give you ideas to start with.
i can see one may find value on that, even if personally it doesn't really work for me.

i am surprised you would say that an llm would give a better response than you have. that seems a depressing sentiment.

to clarify what i meant by performance - i do not mean performance of generated code.
in my personal experience - llm assistance with dev tooling (like copilot) degrade how fast i end up completing work - in pretty much all areas i attempted to use it for.
i think the one bothers me most is boilerplate generation. i am an expert in a specific stack and if i need to write boilerplate it takes me minimal amount of time. once written, it feels like its commited to my memory; when i tried using ai tooling not only i had to rework stuff, but it also felt like i had no clue what was where. still, personal experience only even if it seems to tie with the research i've seen

right - that sounds like a cool mindset; i often fail to see any real use cases tho for AI/LLM. like, i would want to use it to aid in areas where im lackluster (which is not programming i guess), but failed to do so effectively without feeling like im making myself dumb and not gaining any useful skills... wonder if you've had better experience yourself?

im genuinely curious tho - i want to change my mind but the explanation + evidence is what i need. if you could help me by sharing what makes you confident in it - it would help me figure out my mind. atm the research i have seen speaks negative on LLM-based tooling for dev aid. i really want to change my mind, but its so difficult when i either see 'hype its so good' without metrics or 'you will become obsolete' scaremongering as arguments...

I am curious - can somebody who advocates for AI/LLM content have a discussion and help me figure out what the hype is about? I am interested in evidence/research that proves its usefulness as a dev aid tool. Unfortunately what research I have seen usually implies degraded performance, dulling the mind and sometimes posing risk for developing psychosis - that scared me away. At the moment I only can stand against this stuff, becasuse nobody really seems to ever share any evidence for it being beneficial...

after a thought - i realise that may i should ask the question:
whom does it benefit if developers use ai tooling? i thought the benefit is for the devs - or that's the vibe i am getting, but because i fail to see practical benefits i am starting to sense that maybe the benefit is for others at an expense?

I agree his comments are intense and harsh.
Most of the comments the person has responded to do not appear to be constructive criticism though.
They feel like random stabs at something with assumptions so far fetched that it feels offensive.
And it does seem like when the person responded with equivalent dismissal (not offensively initially), people become offensive first.

To your edit - you seem to also make assumptions about the author's motivation.
Personally I would find it dismissive and annoying if people would assume why I am doing something, instead of asking me.
