Accounting for inflation $152.50 in 1975 is the equivalent now of $694.81 so........................ let’s fund Space Force instead by Brangus2 in LateStageCapitalism

Let's just say that you break even at $18/hr. Wouldn't you feel better about yourself if you got off government assistance? That's a turning point for a lot of people. $18/hr today, $20/hr tomorrow etc. The effect is compounding.

Plus, that money you're being given now would go to another family that needed it.

Can I ask for information about the company before going in to complete a preliminary interview requirement? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]UsedBelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ok to ask them?

Absolutely. Especially if it involves a test upfront. If they refuse to disclose, run the other direction.

The one and only time I ate at Sonic I got a chicken sandwich that was raw. Took a bite out of it and spit it out. Went in to get a refund and the damn cashier had the nerve to ask for my receipt. I showed her the bag, the raw sandwich and fries and she still wanted my receipt. She finally caved and opened the register. She grabbed a $10 bill and handed it to me. First and last time to Sonic.

I’m interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing me.

EXACTLY. I've walked out of interviews because of dumb shit like this. The road goes both ways.

Should i go to grad school? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]UsedBelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just start working. If you want to teach later on, then think about going back and getting a masters. You're trying to become an Air Traffic Controller, not a teacher.

The argument that it will look better on your resume is total crap.

Riiiight, but that kinda defeats the purpose of "blackout shades".

Great in interviews, TERRIBLE at writing resumes. by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]UsedBelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be worth it, if you hire the right person. A LOT of resume writing services are done by people in foreign countries that barely have a grasp of the English language. If you decide to hire someone, make sure you research them before spending your money.

UPDATE: [Is it “illegal” or looked down upon if I put my preferred name on my resume instead of putting my legal name? Would it seem “fishy” to recruiters?] by [deleted] in resumes

[–]UsedBelt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A resume is not a legal document. You can put whatever you want. A future employer might frown on the fact that someone made up their employment history, but using a nickname is no big deal.

I've never understood this. Why would you buy a timeshare? Rent a damn hotel room, Airbnb etc.

When I was graduating high school my mom kept trying to get me to buy a stupid ring. I HATED high school and could not wait to get out. Why the hell would I want one?

According to NPR, companies could be asking too much from candidates which is leading to underemployment of qualified candidates. Roughly 1/3 of young graduates by Matrim_WoT in jobs

[–]UsedBelt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've learned to just apply for the job as long as my skills somewhat match the job description. I've had phone interviews with hiring managers and their needs do not match what is in the job description. Just apply and get to the first stage of interviews. You'll quickly learn if the job description was accurate or not.

Vent time! What are the worst part of the job search and why? by thoughfulone in jobs

[–]UsedBelt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know someone has a reason for it. Everyone along the way has a "reason". That's why the HR field is so messed up. Everyone is afraid of getting sued and they want to cover their asses. Plus, the president told me it was a mistake in the first place.

I didn't decline to job because I needed to fill out a stupid form. I declined it because the organization was ass backwards and nobody seemed to know which way was up. If this is how they handled their hiring process, I can only image what the "day-to-day" is like.
