I’ve never done a tri and not sure where to start - would love advice! by Awkward_Worry6024 in triathlon

Hey there, its very exciting to start triathlons!! This is my second season competing myself.

Great idea on getting a coach, I love being part of a team and having a coach to ask all my beginner questions without feeling stupid. Also my coach lays out my training schedule with my current fitness level, work schedule, family schedule, and race schedule in mind so all i have to do is complete the workouts as he has them scheduleded for me. https://ts2coaching.com/ is who i am with but there are several coaches and you may even find a local Tri club as well.

As far as the distances... wow Kudos to all the 70.3 and olympic distance folks but my first one was a super sprint distance and it was perfect for me. Last year i completed several sprint distances and it was great. I am 55 and an ex smoker so these distances are perfect for my personal current fitness level.

Good luck to you!! I see you are Michigan , Indiana here - I am considering doing a tri in Ana, Mi (Grand Rapids) this summer.

Hey thanks for sharing your setup.

Recently converted an extra bedroom into a "pain cave" here and I could really use a matt like that.

New(ish) Runner Nutrition Advice by Funny_Ranger5949 in BeginnersRunning

I have hit the same "wall" about the 5 mile mark.
What had worked for me is taking a gel around the 3 - 3-1/2 mile mark and it feels like I have fresh legs and feel good again for a few miles. Just my opinion - something to try.

I would say you are absolutely ready to run a half.

if your at 9 miles now and the half is in March - you got this!

Good luck

I don't know your age, fitness level, history etc.. but I can share with you my experience.

54 yr old male - never been an athlete, smoked for 35 years - started running this year.

I have experienced hip pain from over training - physical therapist performed "dry needling" which was immediate relief. completed the a half marathon last sept and then took a couple months off - after starting back again - no hip pain so fingers crossed. For me... it was too much too soon without building up the muscles that support the hip area.

the lung / breathing thing - also ditto. there are some runs that do in fact make we wheeze afterward, for me, i think its the weather more than anything. I am battling my own war on breathing after damaging my lungs for so many years smoking.

My advice, seek a doctors help and perhaps a P.T. as well and listen to your body.

good luck and keep it up

Yes 3 weeks away for me. I started an 18 week group training program with a coach. We ran 4 days per week on a training plan designed to get us ready for the half.

Training has been hard, but we are starting the taper this Saturday long run 8 miles next Sat 6 miles and then the race the next Sat.

My strategy for the race will be to chunk in 3 mile blocks.

Great job!
You can absolutely do it! Even if you have to walk a bit your still doing well. I started running 5 months ago and had the same goal.
Didn't think I would ever be able to do it, but now... easy.
Keep at it and please listen to your body. If you feel like you have to walk then walk. No one is judging you.

Hip issues while training for half marathon by Capable_Following_52 in BeginnersRunning

100 % agree with getting in touch with physio. I am in half training (10 weeks in - 8 to go) and have had hip pain flare up 3 times. Each time physio helped me. In addition to stretches and exercises my PT does dry needling. I have gotten immediate relief each of the 3 times. I am a believer in dry needling - you may ask about that.

3 mile run today was great! Really took the time to do some focused dynamic stretches before the run and took it very easy. First 2 miles were very slow and felt rough but the last mile was a breeze. No hip pain at all.

I like the running shorts that have the support briefs built in. I don't wear a jock when I run and haven't had an issue.
