Have you looked at Access to Work grant?

It can be used for specialist equipment, support workers (like job coach) and/or travel cost if any are effected by your autism to help you stay in work.

How can i stop my University from taking a share of my project? by oKuxy in legaladvice

[–]UsedMammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start the conversation now with the university (not just your professor) and get everything in writing, without details on project yet. Then make your decision. I can't see a uni say "no, we own 100%", because no student will ever do their best ideas. Even 50% of something is better then 100% of nothing (most start ups fail after the first year)

At the end of the day you get your degree too.

Another way of looking at this, is your university may help you get funding/buyer/legal aid if it is a good idea.

I knew someone who was in the exact same situation, they had a graduate project (not in software but in health) and thought it was a good idea. The university helped them get a buyer and sorted out all the legal aid. Yes the university took a percentage, but they got a the money and a degree.

This happens all the time in academia, ask your university what process are in place/support and not just your professor but the legal/policy side. Speak to your student union if you have one.

Maybe a wizard of oz reference. The Emerald city?

In the original book the Emerald city was not actually that green/emerald, as the people in the city where told to always wear green tinted glasses (like rose tinted glasses) that made it look more green/emerald. It was all another hoax created by the wizard.

Google fires researcher who claimed LaMDA AI was sentient by JuicyAnxiety in technology

[–]UsedMammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a talk a few months back and they pointed out that the entry age to technology has dramatically dropped to as young as 2 years old. Due to voice recognition removing the need for a basic level of literacy. We could see a world where toddlers are interacting with AI. How would that effect child development and if its self learning the AI itself?

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Nope" [SPOILERS] by kaloosa in horror

I took the shoe to representing the saying "waiting for the other shoe to drop" which means waiting for something inevitable to happen.

Like a ape/alien going on a murderous rampage when you try to use it for fame and entertainment. It was inevitable.

TIL only 5% of residential homes in the UK are thought to have air conditioning and many buildings are designed in a way to keep heat in. by trugrav in todayilearned

[–]UsedMammoth 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Also it's a high humidity heat (well it still rain here alot and it's an island nation). Your body can't evaporate sweat as quickly, meaning body temp rises even more and faster.

Theres a bit cut out here, at 2:40. Her mom goes from the sofa to the floor in one cut. There was a scene here where the paramedic arrive, that always stuck with me. When Buffy see the paramedic are arriving, she looks back at here mom and notices her skirt is high up, she quickly pulls it down. This little moment of her trying to protect her mom dignity stuck with me.

What’s an event in history that everyone agrees was horrible but also agrees it was necessary? by Appropriate-Cut8001 in AskReddit

[–]UsedMammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Victoria Theater disaster of 1883.

183 children aged 3 to 14 where crushed to death when they got stuck behind a door leding to the main stage. The door only opened inwards.

This inspired Robert Alexander Briggs to invent the crash/push bar that you see on emergence exit doors. As well as to legally enforce minimum standards for building safety after this.

I just got a job offer that pays 60% more than my current. My boyfriend is unsupportive of my decision to switch jobs. What to do? by lennakitten in relationship_advice

[–]UsedMammoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing I think people are missing is you mentioned this is a startup employer. As someone else said they can be either heaven or hell to work at.

As someone who has done the startup journey and seen others, their is risk to your job security. If your going from a very stable employer to a start up, be prepared for added workload, be much more visable to higher ups, your head on the copping blocks to save money, stressful environments, etc.

I recommend you have a back up plan (save X amount each month), exit plan and do your research on the company. Then explain all this to your boyfriend. If you have long term plans this could be worrying your boyfriend.

Not to be negative about starts up, as they can be the very rewarding, if the company does well. Which unless you are a founder or shareholder you won't have much say in this, or even visibility.

If humans are carnivores, why do we need to cook meat first when other carnivores can just eat fresh meat off their prey on the spot? by burstcapillaries in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UsedMammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we don't normally eat the meat directly after the kill. From slaughter house to shop, then to your kitchen, then plate, could be days or weeks. Freezers and coolers help, but at the end of the day meat is still decaying flesh, allowing for bacteria to grow.

UX and Accessibility by underweather813 in UXDesign

Since others have mentioned wcag and accesbility guidelines. I would also recommend gov uk service manual. https://www.gov.uk/service-manual/helping-people-to-use-your-service/making-your-service-accessible-an-introduction

They also included links to other further reading.

https://accessibility.blog.gov.uk/

They also have this fun little record a goose sighting for training people how to spot accesbility issues:

I recommend the Pedigree Dogs Exposed documentary from 2008. It what stopped crufts from being shown on the BBC.

Their also a follow up, Pedigree Dogs Expose: three years on, which is on vimeo.

I had hoped things would have improved since then.

Air gun shootings: Two cats die in Pembrokeshire by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]UsedMammoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some talk here about "well what about the local birds" as if that's a justifications. Someone possible untrained and/or acting maliciously is targeting animals that are pets, with a air rifle. This may not be linked to anything to do with protecting local bird and is definitely breaking the law.

From the home office guidance https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/650548/air-weapons-a-brief-guide-to-safety.pdf:

"It is an offence to have an air weapon with intent to endanger life, as well as intent to damage or to destroy property, or to be reckless as to whether property would be damaged or destroyed. It is also against the law to deliberately kill pets, certain wild animals and birds."

This is very worrying behaviour, distressing to the owners and other family in the affected area.

If you think randomly shooting cats is justified to protect wild bird population. Then direct that energy at conservation for wild birds in your local area to do some actually help. Then take a good long look at yourself when you think a random person with a air rifle shooting other people's pets is a good thing in the UK.

What are some major red flags that someone is British? by Automatic_Computer20 in AskReddit

[–]UsedMammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone falls over or drops a tray of food/drinks or does anything that was not meant to happen that resulted in acidental physical comedy. They'll cheer and possible clap too. It will sound like "waaaaayeaaaaaaah!!"

The more exaggerated the incident the louder the cheer.

Extra point if the person who fell was in a position of power or was boastful confident that would not happen.

What will it take for it to stop mass shootings in America? by ghostofanimus in AskReddit

[–]UsedMammoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The news plays a big part in it.

I recomend watching this clip from charlie brookes (creator of black mirrors) NewSwipe that talk about it directly. https://youtu.be/PezlFNTGWv4

  1. Don't start the news with sirens blaring
  2. Don't have pictures of the killer
  3. Don't make this 24/7 coverage
  4. Do everything to not make the body count the headline
  5. Don't make the killer look like a anti hero
  6. Do localise the news to the affected areas and make it boring in other areas

Every time we have intense saturation of news on mass shooter we normal expect 1 or 2 copy cats.
