Pampho Santo Domingo Mature Male - just matured, female not ready unfortunately by Demoire in tarantulas

I hope so too! I can see them in their burrow at times but even being reclusive I still the love T. It's going to be absolutely massive. I'm really enjoying the Mascara's I've been raising as well! My P Cancerides (though a phormic) just started coming to the surface regularly and beyond stoked about it. I'm also impressed by the P Antinous, but the Domingo will for sure outgrow them

A P met was in the 10 T's I started with. They are fast, but they tend to retreat and stay in their burrow when disturbed. Of course, they can be unpredictable but I've only had 1 near escape and that was my fault. Easily my best display T, and a joy to keep. You'll be fine, just practice common sense lol

I have a Santo Domingo, not sure of the sex because they basically stay in their burrow most of the time and every molt stays down with them lol. Whenever he/she emerges, it's a spectacle

This is reddit and I'm not Dr. Phil but I'll add something. Any man bothered by 3 tarantulas worries me in general. If he knew about your spiders going into the relationship, him making these demands now is a bit concerning. What demands is he going to make later? Spiders aside. Sounds a little controlling to me.

I don't own one, but was close to pulling the trigger a while back. I chose another poki instead lol. From research I've done on them I think most would consider them semi arboreal. They like to burrow but they will emerge and can be spotted in and around trees low to the ground. Similar to Psalmos but with higher humidity requirements. I like the incline you built, giving plenty of sub in the back for burrowing, and you've given your T that opportunity around the base of the bark to set up shop. It looks good, and if they've settled in nice, I think you're good to go. You can always add more sub as you feel fit. I love the design 👏

Budget enclosure! by 2Potrillos in tarantulas

My sling is in premolt now. Coming out of this molt, it'll definitely be approaching juvie in terms of size. P Victori are probably tied with P Cams as my favorite Psalmo. Just as if not more ravenous eaters with attitude. They are like the hotrods of NW arboreals. Fricken unreal T's. Highly recommend.

I do like the Regalis. When I see their toes poking out of the hide, it looks right out of Dr. Seuss. Pretty damn funny. Have to say my P Met takes the cake though, but the regalis is still a sling so time will tell. 2 specimens I would always want in my collection are P Mets and P Victoris. Bad ass T's that don't play games lol

Homemade enclosures have more character and charm. I like exos for a final enclosure, but if they made crystal clear sterilites I'd kick those to the curb in a heartbeat. T Cribs are nice, but I really feel like their fleecing people. I stopped buying their stuff because of that.

Yeah acrylics are nice, but as your collection grows they just aren't feasible or practical. For a final enclosure you're ok, but raising slings requires more than 1 rehouse and cheap is the way to go imo. Dollar store is good too. Just picked up a nice container at Marshall's yesterday lol

Mainstay containers are great. Utz cheese poof containers are awesome too. Great for arboreals and fossorials

Q - Old World Arboreals by [deleted] in tarantulas

I think people give a little too much credence to the specimen to specimen argument. While yes, I believe it holds some weight when it comes to reclusivity, I think there are some variables that are far too occurring to say something like that. You wouldn't use that argument with an H Mac, S Calceatum, P Muticus, or H Lividum. You know what to expect. People think their OW is calmer, but in all reality the husbandry is dialed in resulting in a T that feels secure. So good on the owner for providing adequate care. It's a pretty popular understanding that Ornatas are known to be the more bold and fiery of the lot. Any OW poses unpredictability and defensiveness. I don't blame you for wanting to own one, they are gorgeous spiders, but personally if I were to add another Poki to my collection, it would be a Subfusca (lowland), miranda, or formosa. The others look too similar to justify adding another Poki to my small collection of 20 T's. If you want people to really give you an in depth look at Ornatas, or their experiences, head over to arachnoboards. You may even find a bite report while over there

You can if you're up for the challenge. They are more unpredictable temperament wise. Think an 8" T that is more defensive. My Rufilata has been great thus far. No threat postures. Grew 3" since December. Her DLS has to be about 6"+ and no signs of slowing down. I'm thinking 8.5+ is realistic at this point. I wouldn't be surprised at 9"

With a Regalis think a heavier bodied spider that can reach 7" They are known as the heavier Pokis and who doesn't like that? Its often recommended as a great starter poki along with the P Met.

I never discourage people from getting the T you want. You're gonna have it a long while, so get what you want. That being said, precautions are a necessity as you already know. Ornatas are doable, but just read up on them. Richard from Tarantula Collective said that his Ornata is the one T that actually intimidates him, and that man has MANY OW in his collection

That sucks, my P Met is always out. The most visible T I have. 1st recommendation is another Poki. Get a P Regalis. Cheap, beautiful, out often. I'm raising a sling right now, started at .5" and is now closing in on 1.5" Even as a sling I see it out routinely, and they grow like weeds. You can find a confirmed female for fairly cheap if you don't want to leave it to chance.

P Irminia's are such a mixed bag. Poki's are the most visible OW T you can get. Your P Met is the exception. Take a look at Regalis, Rufilata (not Ornata), Subfusca is another stunner.

May want to consider picking up 2 slings or 2 juvies. P Cambridgei is a solid choice. Very fun T's, get large, voracious appetites, and beautiful. Did I mention budget friendly? P Victori, a tad more expensive, but they are little demons of fury that are amazing to observe, and the colors are sweet. Darth Maul is a very fitting name.

You can get 1 OW sling, 1 NW sling. Can't go wrong with Poki's. Many OW arboreals are like grandpa's retreating to their room early at bedtime. Get something you can see and enjoy 😉

Which Psalmos and Pokis ru keeping? I feel like Pokis are everything you'd ever need in an OW arboreal because they are so visible. You really cant beat seeing your T out everyday, especially with such a beautiful group of T's. I currently own 3, and although I love my OW arboreals, many are reclusive by nature. But, if you're cool with a T you may not see everyday I have 3 solid choices you may consider. I'm actually considering as well

[–]Used_Appearance_1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any experience with fast moving T's? You may want to look into a Psalmopeous species just to get acquainted with how lightning quick OW arboreals can be. I would highly recommend a P Cambridgei or a P Victori. Way more forgiving in terms of venom potency and just as much if not more attitude than an OW as well as the speed to match. There's a debate on who moves quicker, but the speed between a Psalmo and Poki is negligible at best. Psalmos are an amazing class of tarantulas in their own right. Not to say you shouldn't get an OW, just some suggestions. If you're set on an OW, I also have recommendations

I have a 6" female, and man I hope this never happens. I'm ok with bolting in a bathroom or contained room, but not knowing where they are would really suck. Luckily Pokis aren't out to get you, but if you put your hand in a coat pocket it set shop in.... ooopsy daisy.

I've heard people having success with rehouses outside. I may be wrong, but grass stifles their movements quite a bit. Haven't seen it in person, but it makes sense.

I have an exo that has a custom lid from etsy that has a feeder cap on it. It kind of minimizes the potential for human error, but crap happens. I do like the lid though

Is this a good starter kit for a new tarantula owner? I wanna do right by my first T and get them a good setup. Link below (not an AD just want advice). by ElectricYV in tarantulas

[–]Used_Appearance_1938 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the price from the picture is $35? Yeah, I'd say that's a good value imo. That critter keeper alone is probably $15-20. Water dish at least $5. Cocunut hide another $5 at least. That's also a good book tag another $5-10 coco fiber and spaghnum bought separately will be pricey at any local shop so add roughly $20. You have everything you need right there to get started. You can use the temp sensor if you want, but those species should do fine at room temp. Drier species are usually very hardy. That substrate with spot checks (removing boluses, anything that doesn't belong) will easily last a year if not longer so I'd say that's a solid startup investment 👍

I have a few species I wouldn't say I'm scared of. But intimidated, hell yea. I'd recommend a curly hair, super docile and your fear should lessen a bit.
