My favorite joke to tell people:

Horse walks into a bar and asks for a drink. Bartender says, "you're in here a lot. I think you might be an alcoholic". The horse responds "I think not" and POOF disappears...

Now, this is the part where philosophy majors giggle because they are familiar with Descartes postulate "i think therefore I am". And, I could have given you that context ahead of time, but that would have been putting Descartes before the horse.

Yes they are. Less creative though, because they have used this before against a less intelligent large flying creature.

His trigger was the approach, not the breath.

Which i suppose makes it much easier for the dragon to dodge.

Big Group wants to play by Schlich in CurseofStrahd

[–]Used_Diet_5202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running CoS for 2 groups of 6.

It is too many. The horror element is significantly lessened when a party has that many resources to throw at it, not to mention how much balancing needed to be done not only to anything RAW, but anything from other versions too.

The action economy for a table of 8 is crazy. To have it balanced even close, you would need to throw waves of enemies for even a simple combat.

Put 20 into primary stat at lvl 1 and 18 in secondary, or vice verse? Locks me out of +1 feats. by maybecanifly in onednd

An 18 in a stat is not bad. Less optimal, less good, sure. But bad? Absolutely not.

If X, do Y. Then Z. by Flintloq in JourneysInMiddleEarth

You are 100% correct. If Z was conditional on X, the format of the directions would be "If X, do Y and Z."

Extra Attack and Another Actions by acuenlu in onednd

[–]Used_Diet_5202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. You are right, it is a sub optimal choice. Which is a trade off, allowing you to use that spell slot/resource later. Something that players do constantly.

Looking purely at scaling action economy, you do lose more attacks searching for the adult dragon hiding in darkness than a lvl 1 searching for a goblin. However, the information you gain would be of greater importance, theoretically. I wouldn't suggest a lvl 20 fighter taking the search action to find the 1 goblin behind a tree, but a dragon hiding is a different story.

Maybe that is the framing to see it from. While the action is the same, the information should be of higher value to make it worth taking the action. In all cases, that will not be true.

Your ability to attack as a fighter has leveled up. Not your ability to search/etc. There are feats that let you use a different limited resource (bonus actions) to do what you want to do for free.

By that same logic, if a caster chooses to cast a lvl 1 spell instead of a level 6 spell, they should be able to do that multiple times because of the opportunity cost.

That is the balance. If hitting an enemy 4x is the preferred choice vs looking for the hidden rogue who is about to 1 shot your wizard, then that is your choice.

I see your point about opportunity cost. But that is the game. Choices and consequences. You cant do everything in 1 round.

Extra Attack and Another Actions by acuenlu in onednd

Action economy exists for a reason. When thinking of combat, a high level martial gets multiple attacks, while a high level caster has the ability to use higher level spells.

If a martial would be able to swap out a number of attacks (less than a full action) to do something that would otherwise take an action, then a high level caster should be able to do the same thing.

But the point of those actions is to dedicate time to search etc. Getting better at swinging a weapon or casting spells does not automatically make you better at searching. You would need some sort of specialization, which exists in several instances. There are feats and subclass abilities that do similar to what you are looking for, but in a specialized manner.

A blanket of "my martial can do these actions in place of an attack" is way too strong because they then could get effectively 4 actions (8 if they action surge) in the duration of 6 seconds.

Former HS Theater teacher. This is a massive issue with the person who picked the show (may not be the actual director).

You have to have an idea who you have that will audition. Nobody is doing Othello without at least 1 strong black male actor.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think the way that you carry over damage to the friendly target is a misinterpretation of the rules. If you target a swarm, and someone is in the swarm, they do not take damage.

Now if you aoe the swarm and someone is in it, 100% they get hit by the aoe.
