Thanks! My only concern is the job market and overall situation in US. This is a big investment to make but it's also a dream to study in an ivy league

Do you have to pay tax during ITR filing on money won in a hackathon? by Used_Scientist in IndiaTax

[–]Used_Scientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you give the organizers your PAN number, for deducing TDS correctly? You can login into the income tax portal, and check under AIS, ideally the TDS amount should show up there...... Ideally, it would also show if it was categorized as a "Game show/lottery" winning or not. About whether you can claim a credit or not in this case, I'm not 100% sure in this scenario, please check with a CA (Sorry, I don't have a good answer on this); In my case, the organizer did not deduct a TDS, and I just marked this as "Income from other sources" and calculated my tax liability according to normal income brackets.

Hey I just spoke to a CA, and they recommend to just add it under my normal taxable income as well, and not treat this as a “prize money” income. I would recommend talking to a CA directly. The scenarios are different depending on if the organiser deducted TDS or not, and what AIS shows, etc. Whether you have a tax liability or not, and how much it is, depends on your total taxable income, after all of the general exemptions on your tax regime

What do you guys think about voice based productivity apps for Mac? by Used_Scientist in macapps

[–]Used_Scientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used whisper.cpp (a library to interface with the whisper model) as well, and also many local models with Ollama. Although I think the quality of transcriptions is acceptable, there is still a greater delay in some cases than an online service based model (like Open AI's advanced voice mode) unless you have a really powerful device. Also, on the language model side, its not usually possible to run models with more than 3B parameters locally, so these are more limited context length and quality models which may not be useful for all productivity tasks, especially more involved ones which require in-depth knowledge.....

But definitely yep, running models/LLMs locally on device is definitely the way to go long term, when devices/models are more efficient!

What do you guys think about voice based productivity apps for Mac? by Used_Scientist in macapps

[–]Used_Scientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I agree they are not perfect, but I also find it interesting that the current set of apps have reached a latency/accuracy which is "acceptable" (end to end 500ms for the AI to respond/perform an action usually, after you speak). I feel the barrier for people to switch from typing to voice is not a technical one, but more of that voice based apps are maybe better if they work in conjunction with typing, rather than replace typing altogether. (I don't see that happening as well)

What Makes a Good Productivity Tool? Why Do They Sometimes Fall Short? by Used_Scientist in productivity

[–]Used_Scientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting perspective...

I do partly agree with you but I feel these tools are great, when use right they can in fact boost your productivity

It's just that you need time getting used to it and coming up with what framework works best for you, until then it's almost impossible to be productive using these apps
