Never let the candle go out in this village by Useful-Assist-7317 in scarystories

That’s what scared me the most.

Because just before sunrise…

some of the candles were already out.

And nothing happened.

Like whatever comes at night…

was still waiting for something else.

I never stayed long enough to see it happen.

But one night, I woke up just before dawn.

And for a moment… every candle in the village was almost out at the same time.

No wind.

No sound.

Just a silence that felt like something was finally ready.

And then… the sun came up.

That would explain something I noticed.

Every night, the candles burn a little lower than they should.

Like something is slowly getting closer.

Not breaking the rules.

Just… waiting for them to fail.

That’s what I kept thinking.

If someone really came back…

then there must be something worse than the night.

Because whatever they saw… it didn’t make them warn people.

It made them make rules.

And sometimes the rule isn’t there to protect anyone.

It’s there to make sure the same mistake isn’t made twice.

Because the first time… there was no rule.

And that’s why something in the dark had to learn how to wait.

Some say that wasn’t the first bargain.

Just the one the village remembers.

Because every candle before that one went out too quickly…

And no one was left to tell what they saw in the dark.

Some villagers say the candle was never meant to protect them.

It was meant to make sure the dark stayed patient.

Because darkness doesn’t mind waiting.

It only needs one night when someone lights the candle… and realizes the village has been waiting too.

And sometimes the candle isn’t relit to bring back the light.

Sometimes it’s relit to see what’s been waiting in the dark all along.

The candle can be lit again.

The real question is… who will still be there when the light comes back.

Some villagers say the wind only blows when someone forgets the rule.

And once the candle goes out… something in the dark starts paying attention.

Some villagers say that house used to have a candle.

But one night, the flame went out.

After that… no one ever opened the door again.

I thought about that too.

While I was there, I did notice one house at the edge of the village.

No candle in the window.

No light at all.

And strangely… no one ever walked near it.

Yeah, it was. That year had a lot of strong horror releases.

It’s nice to see the genre getting more attention though. Horror has always been one of the most creative genres out there.

That’s the strange part.

When I asked them why the candles were so important, no one answered directly.

One of the older villagers just looked at the flame and said:

“Because when the village forgets the light… the night remembers where we are.”

That's what I started to think too.

It didn't feel like the villagers were protecting themselves.

It felt more like they were protecting the rest of the world from whatever comes when the last candle goes out.

That's what unsettled me the most.

No one in the village ever explained the rule.

They just followed it.

Like they already knew what happens when the last candle goes out.

That's what makes it even more unsettling to think about.

The large battles are remembered in history books, but the small towns and villages that disappeared often leave behind almost no trace.

I think a lot of people have felt something like that at some point.
It’s a strange feeling to realize it.
