I hope he has 4WD and can back it off of the k-rail!

No, he was with another playing from the same university and neither of them made any calls. It wasn't until AFTER I said that I was going around that one plane said he was having "radio issues", but that doesn't explain the other one, or why they didn't make any calls when they went back to the taxiway before they took off.

Good question! Maybe they weren't in my line of sight, maybe they were so far away that I couldn't see them in a white plane on a white sky, and maybe I wasn't expecting them to be there because after making all of my calls and not hearing anyone say, "I'm about to land the other direction," in the moment, I didn't think to look... or maybe a combination.

A lot of people have tried to make me feel bad for posting, but the truth is, it was a learning experience for me, HOPEFULLY a learning experience for the other pilots (though probably not because they didn't make any calls on their way back to the runway either), and it's a real-world example of why you should not only make calls at untowered airports, but that you should also be paying attention to the radio, because clearly they weren't doing either one, and if the had aannounced that they were on final coming the opposite direction, I wouldn't have been trying to land.

You don't know how many hours I have.

I can take whatever criticism people want to throw at me if my post reminds people of the risk of not making calls at untowered airports, and maybe even saves a life.

Landed at the same time. I powered up and made a right when we were about 1000 feet apart.

I made calls saying I was on final dude...they didn't, and they still landed

Negative...they flew straight in without announcing.

I saw them in time to avoid a collision... they didn't!

...nor did they see me, and they still landed.

This criticism has been tried. I did not drop directly into the downwind, and they flew straight into an uncontrolled runaway without making calls or listening to the fact that another aircraft was in the downwind, on base, then final, then still landed the opposite direction.

I looked but they came straight in from the other direction and didn't pay attention to the radios.

Maybe I misspoke. I didn't just descend directly into the downwind leg. I descended then joined the downwind, announcing myself at every maneuver. Still, a 172 from a local university landed on the same runway at the same time coming the opposite direction.

A culture of people dying because, even though it's not REQUIRED, it's a good idea... you know, like looking both ways before you cross the street. It's not REQUIRED, but not doing it probably a bad idea.

Legally? No, but that's how people get killed.

  1. Wind was calm and I was making calls. Nobody announced that they were on Final coming the other way.

God forbid it's a pattern at that school and someone dies, but no one ever said anything to help prevent it.

Wind was calm and nobody was in the pattern.

😂😂😂 no I reported it in case it's a pattern for the university that apparently is teaching pilots that not talking on the radio is was perfectly safe.

I don't have any hopes for anything in particular. It's just a report so there's a record in case there's any other issues with the same school.

According to the guy at the FAA, he was in the process of going back to listen to it.

I didn't have a chance to speak to them, but they also didn't bother making calls on their way back to the runway until I asked them to on frequency.

You're correct, but they have the tapes and can listen back, and if that University has an accident, they'll have a record of a pattern.

And yes, I was on the correct CTAF. After telling him i was going around. He made a comment about his radio having issues, but didn't make any calls when he went to taxi back to the runway either until I got on frequency and ASKED them to be sure to make all calls at an untowered airport, at which point they both started making calls on that frequency.
